Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
A funny thing happened about 2,000 years ago in the Greek port
of Alexandria, in Egypt. A priest lit an altar fire outside the doors of a
temple. The fire heated water within a metal globe. The sealed globe
was connected by a tube to a large bucket suspended by chains from
a system of weights and pulleys. As the water expanded, it spilled
through the tube into the bucket. As the bucket got heavier it pulled a
rope that turned the temple doors on their pivots. The doors opened,
as if by magic, just as people were arriving to worship. The priest may
have used the world’s first automatic door-opener.
Another funny thing happened when the priest left the temple.
After he extinguished the fire, the air in the sphere cooled and
contracted. This force siphoned the water from the bucket back into
the sphere. The pulley system was activated in reverse. The bucket
lightened and lifted. The temple doors closed.
This invention was attributed to Hero, a Greek mathematician and
engineer. Hero liked to wow people with his “high tech” mechanical
wonders. Historians cannot be certain that this device was actually
built, though they have found written plans.
The next time your arms are loaded with packages and doors open
to let you through, think of Hero tinkering away in his shop.
