“In our first class, Foundations of Medical Nutrition Therapy, we have
found that the Core Curriculum is perfect for drilling down on enteral
nutrition (EN) and parenteral nutrition (PN) support,” she said, “with
its nice array of entry-level chapters that explain the nuts and bolts of
nutrition support. In the next series of classes, Medical Nutrition Therapy
1 and 2, we go through prevention, management, and nutrition support
for each disease state. Once again, the Core Curriculum supplements
what we teach so clearly.
“We’ve found that the students, most of whom are majoring in nutritional
sciences with an emphasis in dietetics, also really enjoy the integration
of clinical vignettes and practice case studies, and we as instructors
like that the chapters are authored by experts in the field rather than
by professional textbook authors. We get complementary copies of
other products, but the Core Curriculum is our preference: It’s the most

Record Numbers Take On Malnutrition
One in three patients in American hospitals is malnourished, and
A.S.P.E.N. and its supporters are taking enormous steps to change that
reality and find solutions that will make a real difference in patient care:
From September 28 to October 2, in fact, participation in A.S.P.E.N.’s
Fourth Annual Malnutrition Awareness Week™ (MAW) was at an historical
all-time high, with an eye-popping 254 percent increase in webinar
attendees (sites and individuals) and a 177 percent increase in virtual
chat attendance over 2014 programming.
In addition to the professional development opportunities made available
during the week—centered around two webinars and two “chat with the
experts” sessions—13 organizations signed on as supporters of MAW,
demonstrating their commitment to raising awareness about malnutrition
to their members and other constituents.
“Malnutrition is common and so often associated with unfavorable
outcomes,” said Cynthia Hamilton, MS, RD, Chair of the Malnutrition
Committee, “including higher infection rates, poor wound healing, longer
lengths of stay, and higher frequency of readmission. Not unexpectedly,
these outcomes are associated with increased costs. We developed MAW
to raise awareness in healthcare professionals to consider assessing and
intervening earlier, as well as for the public to realize that they need to
ask about their nutrition status and advocate for optimal nutrition care as
much as possible. The success of this year’s programming is truly exciting
and inspirational to all of us in the nutrition support disciplines.”
The success of MAW will continue not only through improved care, but
also through additional outreach efforts: A pediatric-focused op-ed authored
by Mark Corkins was published on popular blogs and websites in September,
including on Psychology Today’s site, and the publication has welcomed
Dr. Corkins as an ongoing contributor. At press time, a news release about
A.S.P.E.N.’s position paper to the Joint Commission regarding making
optimal nutrition a national goal had been posted by more than 225
websites, and a Twitter campaign promoting education and awareness
during MAW made an estimated two million impressions.
Thank you to our sponsors, supporters and participants for making MAW
2015 our most successful yet!
to meet the recommendations set out in The Joint Commission article
noted above, and also walks you through coding for ICD-10 and other
benefits to help your institution improve outcomes while maximizing
reimbursement.
At the same time, we’re launching a Feed Your Patient web solution
center at www.nutritioncare/malnutrition, where visitors will have
access to our comprehensive library of resources. In addition to the
new Improving Patient Outcomes product, you will find an entire line
of resources for both adult and pediatric malnutrition, such as our
interactive, web-based care pathways and links to our popular online
toolkit and related articles and papers, including the position paper
published by The Joint Commission.
“This whole campaign, as well as Improving Patient Outcomes, are
designed to significantly improve access to A.S.P.E.N.’s many malnutrition
resources,” said Peggi Guenter, PhD, RN, FAAN, A.S.P.E.N.’s senior director
of clinical practice, quality, and advocacy. “Our overarching goal is to
provide clear and detailed steps for identifying and treating malnutrition
so that we can provide optimal nutrition care, for both adult and
pediatric populations. Malnutrition is common and often associated with
unfavorable outcomes, leading A.S.P.E.N. to use MAW as a springboard
for introducing new resources—while awareness is high—so that we can all
better address malnutrition year-round.”
A.S.P.E.N. LAUNCHES FEED YOUR PATIENT CAMPAIGN, RELEASES NEW PUBLICATION
Malnutrition Awareness Week™ (MAW) was originally developed
to focus educational programming on a health crisis that affects up to
50 percent of hospitalized patients in the U.S., and after four years of
widespread participation and outreach, the program is an established
part of A.S.P.E.N.’s leadership in addressing malnutrition.
Perhaps even more importantly, the impact and after-effects of
each year’s MAW continues to expand and drive even more awareness:
In just four years, A.S.P.E.N. has successfully gotten MAW placed
on the 2015 National Health Observances calendar by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services; is working with The Joint
Commission to recognize disease-related malnutrition; and has written
a position paper on recognizing optimal nutrition as a safety goal,
which was published in The Joint Commission Journal on Quality
and Patient Safety in September.
And now, we’re launching a new campaign, Feed Your Patient, designed
to provide a growing collection of solutions in an easily accessible way:
First, we’re releasing a collection of optimal nutrition care resources
packaged in a new e-book and in print, Improve Patient Outcomes:
A.S.P.E.N.’s Step-by Step Guide to Addressing Malnutrition, now available
in PDF format online. It provides a step-by-step guide to addressing
malnutrition, adult and pediatric, for institutions and clinicians. The
Guide provides the tools and resources, including interactive pathways,

A.S.P.E.N. Leadership Strategizes
for Future
On October 10 and 11, A.S.P.E.N. gathered its committee
chairs and vice chairs, section chairs and chairs-elect, chapter
leaders, journal editors-in-chief, and task force chairs for our
biennial Leadership Retreat in the Washington, D.C., area. The
group examined how their work with A.S.P.E.N. fits within the
overall organizational strategy, and programming included
building leaders’ skills to apply both to their volunteer work
and to their nutrition support career. Featured experts from
within A.S.P.E.N. and the broader community provided dynamic
presentations over 1.5 days, with the overall goal of helping
us work together to strengthen our leadership teams and
continue to grow the Society.
In 2013, A.S.P.E.N. developed a Future Leaders Program, which
was again offered during the October 2015 Leadership Retreat.
Young professionals, or those new to clinical nutrition, were invited
to apply for the program earlier this summer, and five individuals
were selected by A.S.P.E.N.’s Executive Committee in August.
We enjoyed working with our new ‘fabulous five’ at the Leadership
Retreat, and we can’t wait to see what great things they will
achieve as they become more active in our Society. In the two
years since we started this program, every Future Leader now
volunteers with A.S.P.E.N. in some capacity.
A.S.P.E.N. Launches New
Collaborative Summit for Corporate
Partners
On October 8, A.S.P.E.N. held its inaugural Corporate Summit,
an exclusive, half-day meeting for members of our Corporate
Scientific Advisory Council (CSAC) and A.S.P.E.N.’s Board of
Directors and senior staff.
A.S.P.E.N. created this new forum for our corporate partners
in response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback gleaned
from the interaction and ideas generated during a joint meeting
of CSAC and A.S.P.E.N.’s Board of Directors, held at CNW15.
During that discussion, CSAC members identified a number
of issues deemed critical to the field of clinical nutrition. As a
result of that meeting, the Corporate Summit was created to
encourage deeper dialogue around these and other topics
resonating in the field of clinical nutrition. The goal is to gather
valuable input from our leaders and decision-makers in order
to advance these important initiatives within the profession.
WE’RE TURNING 40!
A.S.P.E.N. will be celebrating its 40th anniversary
next year, and we’ll use CNW16 as the platform
to kick off a year of reflection and commemoration
of this important milestone! We’ll continue our
celebration throughout the year, so stay tuned for
additional information and updates that will help
all of us—no matter how long we’ve been involved
with A.S.P.E.N. and nutrition support—realize how
very far we’ve come.
At CNW16, Dr. Gordon Sacks will highlight some
of our top achievements, and we’ll be talking with
members about what A.S.P.E.N. has meant to them
and how their involvement has advanced their
careers. We’ll give you new insights into how we’ve
evolved as a Society, explore some of our biggest
advances, and celebrate YOU—the very person who,
along with 40 years’ worth of like-minded members,
have together made excellent patient care our
number-one goal.
An organization’s past lends important clues to its
future; please, plan to join us as we celebrate our
history and plan our next decade!
Through both membership and attendance at Clinical Nutrition Week (formerly Clinical Congress), A.S.P.E.N. has always provided
the best opportunities to meet and learn from some of the medical community’s most respected thought leaders, researchers,
educators, and movers and shakers. It’s a tradition that has carried through our entire 40-year history, with some of medicine’s
brightest stars gathering since the Society’s earliest years.
