Season Report
The U15 team had an enjoyable season and played some great cricket. The team finished
5th on the ladder out of 7 teams with 4 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws from washouts. One of
the many highlights would have to be the win against North Ryde, the 2 nd placed team
which played in the final. This was one of our goals which we achieved – to beat a higher
placed team. The other team goal was to win a two day game which we achieved in the
final game of the season. Congratulations boys on a fine season. Special thanks to Jenny
Maggiora, our scorer, Kate Gough, our manager and Mark Abbott and Rick Lelay for helping
out with the umpiring.
Game 1 V St Patrick’s College Black: Lost 8/172 to 10/92
A tough first up game against one of the top teams of the competition! Josh and Raihan
were the 2 standout bowlers with 2/9 and 2/14 respectively. Ben top scored with 20 runs in
a lacklustre batting performance.
Game 2 V Oakhill: Lost 9/184 to 8/104
Nick topped the bowling honours with 3/25 while Jake hit a solid 39.
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club Year Book 2012-2013
Page 26
Game 3 V Carlingford: Lost 7/146 to 10/116
It was tough going against the other top team. Paddy took 3/20 amongst a team total of 38
sundries. Jordy top scored with 21.
Game 4 V North Ryde RSL: Lost 6/238 to 7/180
North Ryde made seemingly light work of our bowling attack on a narrow wicket with Jake
being the pick of the bowlers with 3/46. Our best batting performance so far saw Nick
entertain the crowd with 55 not out hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours.
Game 5 V West Ryde Rovers: Won 3/146 to 7/100
The first of the one-dayers saw us post our first win. Paddy led the way opening with 68
backed up by Pat with 39 not out. Jordy destroyed the top order taking 4/17.
Game 6 V St Patrick’s College Gold: Won 9/135 to 7/109
A solid opening partnership of 73 between Pat (44) and Daniel (24) laid the foundation for
our second win in this one-dayer. Paddy and Jake shared the bowling honours with 2
wickets each.
Game 7 V St Patrick’s College Black: Lost 6/162 to 7/94
The bowlers toiled without much success. Jake starred with 2 of 3 runouts and Raihan put
some respectability in our score hitting 38.
Game 8 V Oakhill: Washout
Game 9 V Carlingford: Lost 8/134 to 10/68
Another one-dayer. Pat took 3/26 and Paddy took a classic catch to dismiss the top batsman
as he closed in on his century. This was probably our worst batting performance being all
out in the 23rd over. Dom hit 4 fours to top score with 17.
Game 10 V North Ryde RSL: Won 6/134 to 10/100
Our best performance of the season defeating the second placed team in the last one-dayer
of the season. Pat and Ben starred in a second wicket partnership of 104, both scoring half
centuries. Pat stamped his player of the match performance taking 3/7 with accurate
bowling.
Game 11 V West Ryde Rovers: Washout
Game 12 V St Patrick’s Gold: Won 10/74 to 10/68
Our last chance to win a two-dayer. In a dour affair Nick led us to victory with a dominant
33. Marcus took 2/6 to restrict the opposition’s score and Paddy took another classic catch.

Player Profiles
Jake Abbott – a worthy recipient of the Player’s Player Award for the team. His all-round
skills are evidenced by finishing 5th in both the batting and bowling averages.
Alex Bernar – played 2 games until injury ruled him out for the season. A formidable left
arm fast bowler.
Nick Bernar – a menacing fast bowler and entertaining batsman. After a lean season in
2011/2012 finished up with the team bowling award and the highest batting average.
Ben De Caria – an excellent team player who had a top score of 52 and never failed to give
his best. His bowling improved as the season progressed.
Marcus Eymael – a valuable addition to the team as first change bowler. His best figures
were 2/4.
Paddy Gough – had a great season finishing first in the bowling aggregates and second in
the batting hitting the Club’s highest junior score of 68. A worthy recipient of the Steve
McAppion Trophy!
Dom Grech – Solid as a rock behind the stumps especially considering the sometimes
wayward bowling of the team. Capable of hitting the ball hard.
Jordy Lelay – a handy mid-order batsman and bowler. Had the best bowling figures for the
team in a match taking 4/17.
Josh Maggiora – a reliable outfield fielding specialist. Had limited bowling opportunities
with best figures of 2/9.
Daniel Newman – an accurate bowler and capable batsman who anchored our innings in
two day matches.
Patrick Rice – the best batsman in the team this season with a high score of 58 and a
versatile bowler with best figures of 3/7.
Raihan Zhafranata – a valuable member of the team who finished 3rd in the batting
aggregates and could be relied upon for a breakthrough when bowling.

Season Report
Unfortunately season 2012 was a disappointment. After winning the previous year we finished last
in a five team competition this season. The situation was not helped with the season commencing
with last minute changes to playing personnel and the team’s administration. This resulted in the
team playing with 9 players for most of the first half of the season. However, the boys appeared to
enjoy their cricket and there were some good personal results. This included three boys scoring
50’s; Connor Sheehan, Adrian Craig and Sean White. The best bowling figures included Cameron
Court 3/14, Connor Sheehan 3/24 and Nathan Skrivanic 3/26.
Our batting continued, as in previous seasons, to be inconsistent but the difference in our results
this year was a decline in our usually very high standard of bowling and fielding. Dropped catches
early in innings gave the opposition sides the opportunity to consolidate and go on and make
reasonable scores which we were unable to match.
As this is the last season most of these boys will play junior cricket it would be remiss of me if I did
not mention the involvement of Barry Sheehan with this team. Barry has been with this team all
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club Year Book 2012-2013
Page 32
through their junior years. Whilst I have assisted with training on Wednesday afternoons for the last
couple of seasons Barry has been the constant factor, giving up his time to look after the boys on the
weekends and help them develop as cricketers. On behalf of the team and the Holy Cross Crusaders
Cricket Club I would like to say thank you to Barry.
I would also like to thank all the parents for their support and special mention to those parents who
assisted with scoring and umpiring. I would also like to mention Jen Bonnett who unfortunately this
year was unable to continue with the Managers’ role but Jen, like Barry, was also with this team for
a number of seasons. Jen ensured the administration of the team ran like clockwork. Thank you Jen.
I hope all the boys have a fulfilling cricket career, irrespective of what level they decide to play. I
would also like to remind the boys Holy Cross do field senior teams if they are looking to continue
playing in a social and team orientated environment.
All the Best
Mick Cleary
Trainer, Crusaders U16
Player Profiles
Cameron Court – An indifferent season by Cameron’s usually very high standards. Still topped the
batting aggregate (135 runs) and bowling average (11.2) for the team. We wish Cameron all the best
with his endeavours in grade cricket next season.
Adrian Craig – A new addition to the team this season. Craig took some time to settle in scoring most
of his runs towards the back end of the season. His batting included a brilliant half century which
almost won us the match against eventual premiers Ryde Hunters Hill. His leg break bowling has a
lot of potential.
Ryan Davoren-Whereat – Enthusiastic in the field and always keen to get into the game. A valued
team player.
Daniel A Jones – Managed to get a few starts with the bat this season but failed to go on and get a
good score. Looked a considerably better batsman and bowler in the nets but the potential did not
translate to runs or many wickets in games. Bowling was consistent.
Matthew McCormick – Matthew only had limited availability during the season due to his school’s
sporting commitments. He was our first choice wicketkeeper when available and took 5 catches in
his two games for the team. He only batted in one innings and scored 49 runs.
Angus McCowage – Another player with regular school commitments. A class batsmen,
accomplished fielder and consistent bowler. Angus did not have the same impact as last season in
his very limited appearances this year.
Rafayullah Shirazi – A very keen trainer who with his natural talent is capable of going further with
his cricket career. Arrived at the team mid season. Finished with a batting average of 25 and his
bowling has potential if he can gain greater control.
Muneeb Sulaman – Another mid season arrival who showed some promise in the nets with the bat
but was given limited opportunities. His bowling also has potential if he can be more consistent with
line and length.
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club Year Book 2012-2013
Page 33
Hammad Siddiqui – Hammad did not have the same impact with the ball as last season, however, his
batting abilities were utilised more this year with him moving up the batting order, topping the
batting averages with 32 runs.
Connor Sheehan – Captain and one of the class players in the team contributing in the field and with
bat and ball. Probably batted himself too low in the batting order. Second in the batting averages
(30.3 runs) and topped the bowling aggregate (13 wickets) for the team. Another player we wish the
best in his efforts to crack grade cricket.
Nathan Skrivanic – Another of the Team’s lynchpins demonstrating class with bat and ball and in the
field. Finished with 10 wickets and 89 runs for the season.
Harry Whelan – Another new member for the team this season. Harry was one of the team’s most
enthusiastic trainers and performed admirably when called on to bowl. Looks a more capable
tailend batsmen then his scores suggest.
Sean White –The side’s regular wicketkeeper and opening bat. Sean did not have his best season
apart from blasting a half century in round 5 against one of the competition’s better bowling attacks.
Again, provided comedic relief from behind the stumps with his constant chatter. Tried hard to keep
the team focussed on the game. Took the ball on a few occasions this season and bowled well.

Season Report
The team had a good season this year and with a bit more luck may have made it through to the
final.
Surprisingly, batting was the team’s strength. We struggled to take wickets but this was due more to
our poor fielding than the skill level of our bowling. We dropped a total of 40 catches from 15
games. No bowler took 5 wickets this season although Tim Story and Jackson Bass took 4 wickets,
Tim on three separate occasions.
The highlight of the bowling this season was Jack Geraghty finally achieving a hattrick. Jack is 45
years of age and a stalwart of the Gladesville District/Inner West Harbour Cricket Association. Jack
could not recall how many times he has been in the position of two wickets in two balls but finally
that elusive third wicket in three balls was achieved!! Congratulations Jack!
The highlights of our batting included Richard Lucas and Matt Needham scoring two centuries apiece
and Matt Cullen also scoring a century. Due to the poor fielding we lost a number of close games
where we were probably the better team in the batting and bowling skills. We finished a credible
third at the end of the season proper and went to the semi final playing a team we had beaten twice
during the season.
Luck was not on our side with the first week being washed out creating a one day semi final for the
second week. Limited over cricket suited the opposition more than our team. We also lost two of
our allrounders, including our top scoring batsman, due to other commitments. The bad luck kept
coming when the game had to be moved to another ground on game day due to damage done to
the synthetic pitch the night before. The alternate ground had much smaller boundaries which also
assisted our bigger hitting opposition.
In the process of us dropping 6 catches the opposition went on to post a challenging 201 runs off 35
overs. Whilst we were never really in the hunt we did put up a good show being bowled out with 5
balls remaining on 179.
As this is probably my last season as a player I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone
who has played and supported Holy Cross Cricket over the years. This current team has been playing
together for 12 years starting with a group of players mainly in their mid to late thirties and now
mainly consisting of those original player’s sons and friends.
I hope this team continues for many more years to come and the current players get to form the life
long friendships that cricket has given me.

Player Profiles
Mitchell Baldwin – The youngest player in the team. Showed his leg spin bowling with be a handful
for any team in the future. One of the better fieldsmen in the team.
Jackson Bass – The big improver of the season! Went from a fill in bowler to opening the bowling in
the latter stages of the season. When Jacko got his line and length right no batsman in the
competition played his cunning outswing with any confidence. Also had a couple of good moments
with the bat, including hitting the winning runs when the team chased down a mammoth score of
280 when 9 wickets down. Topped the team bowling aggregate with 13 wickets.
Pete Bywaters – Pete came out of retirement this season as a few other of the team’s veterans were
suggesting this was their last year. Unfortunately did not achieve the results with the ball he would
have liked. His results were not helped by the team’s poor catching. Has been playing with Mick
Story and Mick Cleary over the last 40 years. Pete has declared he has formally hung up the cricket
boots.
Mick Cleary – As the Captain of the side and all round organiser he has finally realised his time as a
player has perhaps come to an end. His only contribution to the team this season was two catches –
but he dropped seven!! Time to go Mick!! Happy retirement!!
Matt Cullen – One of the standout players for the season after missing the last couple of years. His
fielding was of a high standard and his bowling useful when called on to help out the team. Matt’s
batting was his strongest discipline scoring a century and averaging 26. Will be a major asset over
the coming seasons
Sepp Disch – Only played two games this season and whilst a large score eluded him his two innings
were crucial in helping the team post reasonable totals when the team was in early trouble. May
also be Sepp’s last year as a player.
Nick Fonti – Brings huge energy to the team and is always fighting for the win. Scored a crucial 31
when chasing an imposing 280 to help give the Team their best win of the season. Also topped the
catches list.
Jack Geraghty – Did not have the same impact with the ball as the last two seasons but did achieve
the ‘holy grail’ for bowlers, after 35 years, in achieving his first hattrick. Saw glimpses of his
destructive batting but did not go on to record a big score. Age does seem to have caught up with
his mobility in the field.
James Hannam – Was a regular in the team this season and had mixed results in the field. Dropped
a couple of easy catches but regularly stopped opposing batsmen from running second and third
runs. Had one standout innings hitting a swashbuckling 31 against the best team in the competition.
Mitch Harrison – Scored a quick fire 61 early in the season but unfortunately failed to turn a few
other starts into good scores. Bowling and fielding was consistent.
Damien Kennedy – Started the season with two scores of 20+ but fell away as the season progressed
and lost confidence. Hopefully a big season coming up next year.
Richard Lucas – The team’s most consistent all rounder. Whilst his bowling was always a handful he
really excelled with his batting. Richard topped the team batting aggregate with 345 runs which
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club Year Book 2012-2013
Page 37
included 2 centuries.
Luke McColl – Luke made the decision early in the season to become a support player and lost
interest in playing every week. Was always available to help the team out when needed but did not
set the world on fire with either bat or ball due to his lack of match practice. Looking forward to
seeing him return as a regular player next season.
David Naylor – Only played 2 games this season but again showed what a quality player he can be
topping the team averages in those two games with 53 runs. This might also be DN’s last season.
Matt Needham – It was good to see Matt return to his best after an average season last year.
Topped the batting averages of the regular players with 38 and scored two centuries. Bowling was
consistent and one of the team’s best fielders. An important cog in the team.
Matt Saleh – Matt only filled in for a couple of games this season and performed his role with bat
and ball admirably. Hope to see more of him next season.
Jake Stewart – Scored consistently throughout the season with a top score of 75. One of the team’s
most consistent bats. Took over the wicket keeping duties full time this year and did an excellent
job. A key player in the team.
Michael Story – Another one of the veterans of the side who regularly achieved good starts with the
bat without going on to a big score. Like the other veterans in the team his fielding abilities have
almost deserted him dropping 5 catches during the season. Has also probably played his last season
in A grade.
Tim Story – Did not make an appearance in the team until round 7 due to an extended holiday. Was
still lethal with the ball taking 4 wickets on three separate occasions. Tim’s batting was the big
improvement this year scoring 146 runs at an average of 29. Did have some issues with his catching
mainly due to a lack of confidence in this particular skill. Another of the key players in the team
I would also like to mention and thank; Ben Slade and Joel Wells, who filled in for the team at
different times when we were short of players and a special mention to Connor Sheehan and
Hammad Siddiqui from the under 16’s who also played one game for us when the team was
struggling for numbers.

Perpetual Trophies – A History
Along with the President’s Trophy for Junior Cricketer of the Year, perpetual trophies in the modern
era of our Club go back to the early 1980s. Previously presented in the form of encouragement
awards and now known as Best Player Awards – a trophy is presented yearly to a cricketer in each
competing age group. The winner also holds the perpetual shield for twelve months. These shields
have been named in honour of people, whose involvement with Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club
stands as testament to sacrifice and commitment, to both our Club and the great game of cricket.
Under 8 – Bill Winch Trophy
From 1985 to 1995, Bill Winch was one of the most active members of the then Holy Cross College
Cricket Club. He was involved as coach of every age group from Under 12 to Under 16, following his
son Andrew, then his daughter Martha, through the ranks. Bill was also Vice President of the Club.
Bill grew up in the local area, attending Villa Maria and Marist Brothers Darlinghurst. He played
a number of sports in his youth, including rugby league and cricket. During the 1970s, he was
one of the leading batsmen in the Gladesville district, earning a reputation for his hard hitting.
Bill’s son, Andrew represented the district in various representative teams, including Martin
Shield. His daughter Martha – one of the few girls to play with the Club – has reached the ultimate
in cricket, going on to represent Australia.
Under 9 – Principal’s Trophy
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club, as a school-based club, has the support and approval of the school’s
administration for training facilities and gear storage. Many presentation nights and meetings have
taken place at the College – a facility to which the Club has been, and always will be, most grateful.
All recent College Principals have been supportive to the Club’s cause: Br Stephen Aitken (19711980); Br Phillip Mulhall (1981-1986); Br Anthony Visser (1987-2000); Br Matthew Mahoney
(2001-2002) who was most influential in helping obtain the College’s cricket wicket and more
recently, the current Principal, Adam Taylor. It is this stance that saw the Club Committee name
the Under 9 Award, in recognition of the continued support demonstrated by the Principals of
the College.
Under 10 – Brother John Thompson Trophy
1986 marked the end of an era, with the closure of the Primary section of the College, which was
first opened in 1958 as Borromeo. One man who stood out in the history of this school was Br
John Thompson, who was Headmaster from 1968 until 1983. During the 1960s and 70s, Br John
coached and managed many cricket and rugby league teams from the College. Players under his
care during these years will never forget his concern and compassion. As a result of these
contributions, Br John was made a Life Member of Holy Cross College Sports Club in 1973. Br John
Thompson passed away in 1991.
Holy Cross Crusaders Cricket Club Year Book 2012-2013
Page 42
Under 11 – Brother Paul O’Keefe Trophy
Br Paul’s first involvement with Holy Cross was during the mid-1970s, when he taught in both the
Primary and Secondary sections of the College. He also coached cricket teams in this period.
Br Paul was then transferred to the Patrician Brothers Schools in Papua New Guinea for six
years. On his return to Australia in 1982, he resumed coaching Holy Cross College Cricket
teams. Br Paul succeeded Br John Thompson as Principal of the Primary School, until its
closure in 1984. He then joined the staff of St Charles Primary School becoming Principal a
year later. Br Paul held this position until 1993. He also served as Treasurer of the Cricket
Club.
Under 12 – Brian Brereton Trophy
Although his association with the College was only a short one, Brian impressed all who knew him, by
his dedication, enthusiasm and application to his task. In addition to his many administrative skills,
Brian was a very capable cricketer over a number of years. He was a highly principled man who
regarded the game as more important than the individuals. Sportsmanship was the ultimate
criterion and this was reflected in the manner and approach he took to life in general. His son
played with the Club from Under 10s through to Under 16s. Brian passed away in 1985.
Under 13 – Brother Michael Stanton Trophy
Br Michael’s involvement with Holy Cross began as a student in the 1970s whilst attending the
Patrician Brothers Juniorette at Wahroonga. He returned in 1981 as the youthful Br Jeffery, before
reverting back to this baptismal name of Michael. The confusion at the time led to the nickname of
“Fine Cotton” after the infamous substitute racehorse. During his ten years at Holy Cross College, Br
Michael was involved in soccer, rugby league, tennis and cricket, for both school representative
teams as well as weekend sides. In addition, he held administration posts for cricket, rugby league
and the College’s Sports Management Board. From 1982 to 1990, he was Secretary of the Cricket
Club.
Under 14 – Eric Ellem Trophy
Eric started his association with cricket in the northern rivers area of NSW as a member of the infamous
Ellem Family Cricket Team. This team travelled around the country playing against allcomers, with Eric
developing as a left arm spin bowler, batting in the middle order. Eric came to Sydney and played
for Bayview in the Gladesville district competition from 1948 until 1956. He commenced coaching at
Holy Cross College in 1971. Eric was appointed Delegate to the Association in the same year. He was
elected President of the Cricket Club in 1975. Eric continued to coach teams until 1979 and retained
his positions as Delegate and President until 1983. Eric also acted as the GDJCA’s publicity officer for a
number of seasons.

Page 43
Under 15 – Steve McAppion Trophy
Stephen became involved in the administrative side of sport after attending Holy Cross in the 1970s. He
served on the Soccer Club, GDJCA and the Cricket Club’s committees, as well as the Sports
Management Board. Stephen was President of the Club from 1988 to 1998 and has heavy
involvement in both cricket umpiring and soccer refereeing. Stephen’s love of cricket statistics was
the driving force behind this Yearbook, which he championed for many years.
Under 16 – Frank Vergano Trophy
Frank Vergano’s involvement with Holy Cross began in 1971. Over the next twelve years, he coached
teams that won competitions in both the Gladesville and Balmain districts.
Frank also acted as Coach/Manager for several representative teams. Many a Holy Cross player was
taught their first fundaments by Frank.
He himself was a competent cricketer and umpired grade matches for the NSWCA. His two daughters
played competitive cricket, along with his two sons who both played for Holy Cross from Under 10s
through to A Grade. Frank’s support of children’s sport was unending and included soccer and rugby
league. He passed away in 1982.
