extensive region in Northeast Brazil. This is tb twentyseventh BANK loan for the development of the Brazilian
electric power sector, and the second loan to Companbia
Hidro Eletrica do Sao Francisco (CRESF).
The other loan for $36.0 million will assist
a water supply and sewerage project in the State of Minas
Gerais, the s cond most populous state in Brazil. To
improve water and sewerage services, the Brazilian Government has made the National Housing Bank (BNH) responsible
for the sector. Under BNH, a National Sanitation Plan
(PLANASA) aims t providing 80% of the urban population
with adequate water and 50% with adequate se erage services
by 1980. The loan was made to B~TI"{ who will relend the
proceeds to the Companhia de Aguas e Esgotos (COMAG).
