FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
$3.2 Million Awarded for 119 Nonprofit Programs serving Bexar and
Surrounding Counties
SAN ANTONIO (November 15, 2016) – The San Antonio Area Foundation has awarded more than $3.2 million throughout
2016 to 119 nonprofit programs in the areas of animal services, arts and culture, children and youth, community-at-large,
medicine and healthcare, and seniors in Bexar and surrounding counties. Funding is awarded in two cycles as part of the
Area Foundation’s “Annual Responsive” grants process.
“Our annual responsive grants are awarded through a competitive application process, and they reflect the priorities of
the donors who made the funds possible,” said Lydia Saldaña, program officer for annual responsive grants at the Area
Foundation. “The generosity of our donors makes it possible to provide funds for a wide variety of needs in our
community. We’re thankful that our donors entrust us to identify critical needs and to select the most qualified nonprofit
programs that will make the most impact in our community.”
The full list of nonprofit recipients is included and can also be seen by visiting
saafdn.org/Nonprofits/Grants/AnnualResponsive.
The total funding amount for cycle two is $2,149,526 to 76 programs (awarded in November). Grant funding by category:
• Animal Services – 18 grants totaling $569,228
• Arts and Culture – 23 grants totaling $735,635
• Community-at-Large – 20 grants totaling $442,132
• Seniors – 15 grants totaling $402,531
The total funding amount for cycle one (awarded over the summer) was $1,060,813 to 43 programs. Grant funding by
category:
• Children and Youth - 24 grants totaling $531,050
• Medicine and Healthcare - 19 grants totaling $529,763
TOTAL ANNUAL RESPONSIVE GRANTS FOR 2016 is $3,210,340.
For the Area Foundation’s grants processes, nonprofits submit applications for funding. The applications are vetted by
staff and presented to advisory committees, made up of community members that are experts in the program area.
Community members read all applications, make site visits and rank the requests for scoring and tallying to determine
the recipients. The Area Foundation offers two cycles per year of “Annual Responsive” grants, among several other
separate processes. Cycle one awarded $1,060,813 for Children and Youth and Medicine and Healthcare. Cycle two has
awarded $2,149,526. The Cycle two process opened in June 2016 and closed in July 2016. Cycle one grants will reopen in
January 2017 with a deadline of February 2017.
