CHILD’S BEDROOM
TIRED OF PINK OR
BLUE? TRY YELLOW
PAINTING BY
NUMBERS
NEW COLOUR, NEW ROOM
Janita Singh
THE most effective makeover to a
child’s bedroom is painting. For
the cost of four litres of paint, the
space can be easily transformed.
But with so much variety, getting started is a difficult task, says
Inspirations Paint colour consultant and interior designer Angie
Hinchliffe.
‘‘Most colours work well in a
child’s room if you choose the
right intensity appropriate for
their age,’’ Hinchliffe says.
‘‘The most common mistake
people make when painting children’s rooms is they pick the
brightest colours on the chart.’’
She says children are attracted
to very bright colours so they tend
to pick intense shades themselves.
‘‘When parents show me a
colour paint chip selected by their
child, I generally end up going
with that colour but up to eight
shades lighter.’’
She suggests using neutrals for
growing children. A light almost
white pink works for little girls as
she ‘‘changes from purple being
her favourite to yellow and red’’.
For boys, earthy colours of
browns, greys and greyish blues
are best. ‘‘Keep the colour a soft
muted tone rather than bright.’’
BABY DELIGHT
Soft grey is perfect for a nursery
especially if it’s going to be gender
neutral. It looks great with white
and works well with other colours,
especially baby blues, yellows and
pinks. ‘‘There is a trend for a more
contemporary style, opting for stripes and colours such as orange,
charcoal and navy as opposed to the
traditional pastel blues and pinks.’’
BOYS AND GIRLS
For young boys, coffee colour works
well with red and blue. ‘‘For girls,
pink is always a favourite, but an
updated take on this is a very light
pink paired with lots of white and
red in accessories.’’
TEEN TREAT
Turquoise works well with small
hits of pink, red or even black and
white. A monochromatic scheme of
berry colours is also a great look.
Charcoal, silver and white with a hit
of orange is on trend for boys.
Try painting neutral colours, such as grey or greyish blue for boys.
THE ARTIST WITHIN
Angie Hinchliffe says a child’s room is
a great place to demonstrate the full
scope of your creativity or ‘‘your
child’s, if you’re brave enough’’. You
don’t need to be a trained artist to
paint a mural with a fun theme. Look
around for inspiration and then
practise your design on paper. You
can then map out the artwork on the
wall using a soft lead pencil before
getting on to the painting job.

WHEN the Armstrongs were expecting their first child, they opted
to keep the gender a surprise.
Mum Christine says they wanted to create a bright and inviting
room for their new addition but
didn’t want the traditional blue for
boys or pink for girls.
So they decided on a gender
neutral scheme of yellow with
hints of green and blue.
After deciding on colours and a
jungle theme, the couple decided
to experiment with murals as well.
Christine’s mother is an artist
so they had her paint murals of a
monkey, giraffe and peacock (pictured) on the wardrobe.
The finished product was great
for the arrival of baby girl, Abigail, who delighted in the art.
Years later, the Armstrongs
were expecting their second child.
This room is now home to their
son, Eddie, proving gender neutral colours are versatile for the
unexpected surprises in life.
