INTRODUCTION TO THE GUIDE
Purpose:
This “pointing guide” is a two-way, hands-on guide. It can help library staff who are not
proficient in Spanish, as well as Hispanic customers who do not speak English. Although
it is not a substitute for bilingual staff (or employees who are actively learning Spanish),
the guide can still enable public service where assistance may not otherwise have been
possible.
A Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary is an excellent supplement to the
vocabulary in this guide.
Uses:
•
By pointing to questions, responses and library terms in the tables, library staff
and customers can communicate without speaking. Each table can be a “script”
for basic transactions. Staff can begin the transaction by saying, “ POR FAVOR
LEA ESTO” (POHR fah-BOHR LEHAH EH-stoh): “Please read this.”
Staff will also be able to ask customers to write down their more complex requests, for
clarification or completion by a Spanish-speaking colleague.
• After studying the two pronunciation guides in this resource, staff can read the
questions aloud.
• Staff members who are learning Spanish can use the expressions, vocabulary and
lists of subject headings to increase their proficiency. Also, Hispanic customers
can learn the English terms for materials and services in the library.
Format:
Sections address specific public service areas (circulation, reference, children,
computers) as well as general situations. Because the content is not always repeated in
each section, staff should become familiar with the organization of the tables for effective
use on the job.
Sources and Revision:
The content of this guide is derived from the print and online sources listed in the
bibliography, as well as from usage of online Spanish-language library sites. Content has
been adapted to the services and policies of the Beaufort County Library.
Gustavo Vercellone, an Argentinian translator of Spanish with Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton
Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. translated and edited the content of the sensitive
“Problem Patron” section [XIV] in the First Edition of 2003.
This guide will be revised as needed, and will include suggestions and corrections from
the “front-line” experiences of library staff. It will always be a work in progress, with
updates to meet the needs of library staff and customers.

[a] Basic Sounds & Spelling:

like the a in English father
e
like the e in belt
i
like the i in marine
ie
like the Y in English yes.

like the o in motel

ua, ue, ui, uo
like the W in English
watt, way, we, woe.
b, c, ch, d, f, l, m, n, p, s*, t* and y are
pronounced much as in English.
[b] Soft “g” sound before i and e as
geografia, gira
[c] Pronounce Spanish g before a, o, u
and consonants as in English gone.
Before e and i, pronounce qu as k in
English king and gu as g in gone.
h is always silent in Spanish.
v is pronounced the same as b.
j [and g before e and I] is like a throaty h
sound in English [how].
ll (double L) and y are pronounced as the
Y in English yes.
ñ (with “tilde” sign, ~ ) is like to ny of
English canyon.
r is “rolled” in Spanish -- but use your
English r until you can master the Spanish
sound.
x as in English next (EXCEPTION: México =
Méjico)
Z is always the S of English Soon.
* NOTE: Always pronounce t as in English
tape and S as in Soon.
[b] Stress and accent:
Stress the next-to-last syllable [NA-da, es-TA-do] except when:
1. The word ends in a consonant other than n or s. The stress falls on the last
syllable in these words. [Examples: es-pa-ÑOL, sa-LUD, me-JOR, fe-LIZ].
2. Words have written accents* over the stressed syllable
[ Examples: a-sí, in-GLÉS, au-to-BúS, in-vi-ta-CIóN ].

[a] Vowels:
There are only five vowels sounds in Spanish:

When i comes before another vowel, it is
pronounced like the Y in English yes.
Examples: bien (byen) , prefiere
(prefyere).
•
When u comes before another vowel, it
is pronounced like the W in English
wind Examples: bueno (bweno),
aduana (adwana).
•
u is silent after q and g (Spanish queso
is like English KAY-so and guerra is like
like the a in English father
[Examples: casa, cuesta]
like the e in belt, end [Examples:
él, ejemplo]
i
like the i in marine and the ea in
bean [Examples: chico, vivir]
o
like the o in motel [Examples: poco,
sol)
u
like the u in rude and the oo in
moon [Examples: uno, Uruguay]
[b] Consonants:
e
b, c, ch, d*, f, l, m, n, p, s, t and y are
pronounced much as in English (the differences
will not interfere with communication!).
* Between vowels, after r, Spanish d sounds
almost like the th in English those. Example:
nada (na-tha). -- At the end of a word, the
Spanish d is a weaker th sound. Example: salud
(sa-looth).
g is “hard” (as in English gone) before a, o, and
u [Examples: ganar, gobierno, gusto, hago]. -“Soft” g – before e and i -- sounds like a strong
h. [Examples: general, giro]. This is the ch of
Scottish loch and German Bach.
j is a strong h sound, the g of giro [Examples:
Juan, dejar, baja, Tijuana].
h is always silent in Spanish [Example: hora is
pronounced ora].

* Some Spanish speakers pronounce ll and y
like the English j of jam.
ñ (with “tilde” sign, ~ ) is like to ny of English
canyon [Examples: niño, mañana].
r * is “rolled” in Spanish, especially at the
beginning of a word. Practice by trying to “trill”
to r in English three -- but meanwhile use your
English r to communicate. -- Double r [rr] is
strongly rolled in Spanish [Example: tierra].
* Between vowels Spanish r, sounds like the tt
in the English word, bitter. [Examples: pero,
miramos].
S and Z are always pronounced as the S in
English soon [never as Z in English zoo].
Examples: zapato, taza, sabe, mesa,
t is always similar to the t of English tape -never like the d sound of the English word, later.
V is pronounced as b.
ll* (double L) and y* are pronounced as the Y
in English yes [Examples: llama, yo].
[c] Stress and accent:
In English, certain syllables are stressed among
others in a word. For example: In English, we say
VI-de-o, and not vi-DE-o or vi-de-OH.
Spanish has its own rules for stressing
syllables:
x as in English next (EXCEPTION: México =
Méjico)
3. Words that do not follow rules #1 and #2 carry
a written accent* over the stressed syllable
[Examples: poLítica, in-GLÉS, au-to-BúS, invi-ta-CIóN].
1. Stress the next-to-last syllable of words
ending in a vowel, in n, or in s [Examples: na-da,
bi-blio-TE-ca, es-TA-dos u-NI-dos, CO-men].
2. Stress the last syllable of words ending in a
consonant other than n or s [Examples:

also indicate “question words”

ACUERDO PARA UTlLIZAR EL INTERNET
• Todos los usuarios de los computadores de la biblioteca leerán este acuerdo y lo firmarán con la comprensión de
que será guardado en fichero por la biblioteca. Este acuerdo es confidencial y no se puede obtener de la biblioteca
a menos que se presente una orden judicial firmada por un juez.
• Porque el Internet existe como medida no regulada, todos los usuarios menores de 18 años de edad deben
obtener una firma de padres o guardianes antes de permitirles el acceso al Internet. El personal de la biblioteca
puede pedir identificación.
• La biblioteca no vigila o controla la información obtenida a través de las bases de datos Internet u otras del
CD-ROM, y no valida la responsibilidad de su contenido. Una copia de las políticas de Internet de la biblioteca está
disponible en el sitio Web www.beaufortcountylibrary.org o por solicitud en el escritorio de circulación.
