National Schools Constitutional Convention

ISSUE 7 | TERM 1 | WEEK 11 | 3 APRIL 2017

National Schools Constitutional Convention
Alyssa in front of Parliament House with fellow
National Schools Constitutional Conference Candidate
Scarlet Iwanovski from Tasmania.
During 15–17 March, I was granted the opportunity to
represent the State of NSW with 29 other candidates at the
National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra. In
total, 119 students from all across Australia attended the
conference at Old Parliament over the three days, as well as
attending two panels with well-regarded speakers, such as
an ambassador of the Embassy of Norway and a member of
the Canadian High Commission, a dinner at the High Court
and a reception held by Lady Cosgrove, the wife of the
Governor General.
The main purpose of the conference, however, was to
discuss the recognition of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander
peoples in the constitution, where we discussed possible
courses of action to address any problems and conducted a
small-scale referendum to be presented as a communiqué
in measuring the successfulness of the conference.
Upon looking back on my experience, I can definitely say that
I was able to make memories with both old and new friends,
as well as engage in an event that I am extremely unlikely to
forget any time soon.

Year 11 Interim Reports have been posted on the Parent
Portal for you to access and read. Interim reports give a
snapshot of student’s behaviour, achievement and
application in their first important term of their Stage 6
study.
Reports can be accessed by to following method
1. Login to the Parent Portal (If you have not registered
yet click here for information on registration)
2. Select your Year 11 Child
3. Select Reporting on the left menu
4. Select Published Reports
5. A list of all reports will be available to view and
download
You will notice under published reports that previous reports
are there for you to download as well. A special thanks to
Michael Dunkerley and Aaron Simpson, our hard working
Technical Support Team, for making this possible!
I encourage you to explore the portal, there is a large amount
of information available that will inform you about your child
and the happenings in the school.
Just a reminder that Friday is the last day of Term 1. School
will resume for students on Wednesday 26 April.
The last few days have been difficult ones for many in our
school’s community, and at the time of writing this report
there continues to be families, businesses and schools still
struggling with the clean-up and loss associated with what
was a devastating weather event. I would like to
acknowledge the support the school received during this
time and in particular on Monday 3 April, on a day when
Kingscliff High was operating with significantly reduced staff
numbers. On a more personal note I would like to wish all
those who have been effected by the inundation of water
and mud the best wishes and thoughts from everyone at
Kingscliff High School and the hope that life returns to
normal as soon as possible.
I mentioned in a post on Facebook and our website that in
adversity we can judge the strength of a community. By any
measure we have an awesome community!
Finally, I would like to thank Ms Rowles, Ms Shaw and Ms
Jardine for the outstanding job they have done over the past
3 weeks whilst relieving as Deputy Principal, Head Teacher
Administration and SAM respectively. It has been a
challenging time and they have managed their
responsibilities with great skill and dedication. I look forward
to Mr Hensley returning at the beginning of next term and us
all returning to our substantive positions.
Incentive for General Contributions and Elective Fee
payment
We would like to reward the students of these families, along
with any other student whose contributions and elective fees
are paid in full by the end of Term 2. All of these students will
go into a draw for an electronic device, approved by the
Department of Education and Communities under its “Bring
Your Own Device” initiative to the value of up to $700. The
winning student, announced at the beginning of Term 3, will
be able to purchase an electronic device of their choice that
meets our BYOD recommendations from the retailer of their
choice. Our BYOD recommendations are available on our
website. Once they have submitted the receipt to Ms Bayliss,
our School Administration Manager, they will be reimbursed
by the school for the value of the approved device or up to
$700 of the total price.
We hope to not only collect as many “school fee”
contributions as possible to further support teaching and
learning at our school, but also encourage a key aspect of
“21st Century learning”.
Careers 2017
Another busy year. All Year 10 students should now have had
an overview of what Careers will hold for them in 2017.
Hopefully they have discussed with their parents that there
are many important dates to mark on the calendar.
Really enthusiastic students would have not only given their
parents the bright blue letter with all this information on it,
but may also have shown their parents the Careers Website
and the calendar that has all these dates as well.
Some important dates in the very near future include: Parent
Teacher Evening on 2 May. At 4.30pm and then again at
5.30pm, there will be an overview of Work Experience in the
TLS. Interested parents encouraged to take time out of
meeting teachers to come and join one of these sessions.
On 11 May the school will take approximately 100 students
to the Gold Coast Careers Expo. Notes will be distributed
early Term 2. It will cost $10 to cover the buses. There is
another Careers Expo: Connect to Your Future at TAFE on
Tuesday 16 May. As this is so close to home and runs after
school (3.30pm – 7.00pm), everyone would benefit from
attending.
At the end of Term 2 we will run two School to Work days (27
and 29 June). Students are encouraged to be at school for
these days.
Careers now has its own website. So much information is
stored here or can be accessed from this site. Have a look
around, sign up for the regular careers newsletters, help your
child
create
their
resume.

IMPORTANT DATES * Denotes importance
Students in the A4 class were recently given the opportunity to work alongside Mr
Holliday to create their very own individual real life clay ‘monster’. The students
enjoyed all aspects of the lesson and were able to produce some outstanding pieces
of art!
Thank you Mr Holliday!
Big Science Competition
The Science Department has an opportunity for students to challenge themselves in the Big Science Competition. This fifty minute
international competition is open to students of all abilities at four different levels: Year 7, 8, 9 and 10. The questions test
students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as their science knowledge. Each student who takes part will receive
a certificate as well as detailed feedback on their performance in the competition. They also go into a draw to win cash prizes.
Our school will receive a comprehensive report for each paper level showing how each student performed on each question, the
percentage of students in the cohort who answered correctly, and a comparison with the national results.
The Big Science Competition will be held in school between 17 and 24 May 2017. The Big Science Competition is organised by
Australian Science Innovations (www.asi.edu.au), an independent not-for profit organisation committed to contributing to building
Australia’s scientific community through inspiring and developing our best science students.
Any student interested in participating in this competition please see Mrs O'Keeffe, Science staffroom, by Wednesday 5 April
2017.
Rugby League
Congratulations to Oscar Clarke and Josh Bowden for being selected for the 2017 North Coast Rugby League U18's and U15's
teams. The North Coast trials were played in extremely wet conditions last Thursday and the boys are to be congratulated for their
efforts. The next selection trial for the Greater Northern team to contest the NSW CHS trials will be against Hunter Region in Coffs
Harbour on the 2 and 3 May 2017. Best of Luck to Oscar and Josh.
Year 7 Thunderbird Park Camp
The Year 7 camp has been rescheduled to Monday 5 June to Wednesday 7 June 2017. A note will be issued this week.
