PATE Music Office Assistant Cathedral Church of the Advent The Cathedral Church of the Advent strives to serve God in Jesus Christ by reaching out from the center of the Birmingham community through evangelism and mission. The Advent music ministry is an extension of that purpose, proclaiming the Gospel through the Anglican choral heritage. The special music events presented by the Cathedral are a vital part of its music ministry. By offering such events, we are not only able to expand the opportunities for our parishioners to experience sacred music outside of regular worship services, but also extend our ministry to the communityat-large. 2017 Sixth Avenue North Birmingham, AL 35203 MUSIC AT THE ADVENT CONCERT SERIES M I D - D AY M U S I C SPECIAL CHORAL SERVICES Cathedral Church of the Advent BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA THE SEWANEE UNIVERSITY CHOIR CONCERT SERIES JOEL BACON ORGAN REQUIEM, OP. 9 - MAURICE DURUFLÉ THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR IN CONCERT Friday, February 17 - 7:30 p.m. Free Admission Frederick Teardo conductor Charles Kennedy organ Tuesday, November 1 - 7:30 p.m. Free Admission The period surrounding All Saints’ Day is often marked as a time for remembrance of those faithful who have gone before us to heavenly rest and eternal glory. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), the great 20th century French composer. On All Saints’ Day, the Cathedral Choir will sing Duruflé’s most beloved work, the Requiem, along with select choral works by the composer as well as other works for remembrance. Joel Bacon serves as Chair of Organ and Liturgical Studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. Bacon has a growing reputation as a performer, teacher, and scholar in North America and Europe. He has been heard in recital in Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States, as well as in live performances that have been broadcast on Austrian Radio (1) and Public Radio International. He will perform a varied program on the Cathedral’s 100-rank Grieb-Williams organ. Frederick Teardo organ Sunday, April 9 - 3:00 p.m. Free Admission Frederick Teardo organ Monday, November 7 - 7:30 p.m. Free Admission Advent’s Director of Music and Organist, Frederick Teardo, will perform the complete organ works of Maurice Duruflé to further commemorate the 30th anniversary of the composer’s death. Duruflé was known to be extremely self-critical, and though his output for the organ consists of only 90 minutes of music, nearly all of his works have become celebrated pinnacles of the organ repertory. Come and hear this extraordinary musical tribute. The nationally renowned Choir of the University of the South and their newly appointed director, Dr. Geoffrey Ward, play an important role in the musical life of the University and All Saints’ Chapel. The University Choir not only has the liturgical duties of singing for Sunday Eucharist and Evensong in the Chapel, but also offers several concert performances throughout the year, often with orchestral accompaniment. Choir members represent a broad spectrum of the undergraduate student body, all united by a common love of music and an interest in singing, studying, and performing the finest liturgical music. The Sewanee University Choir is truly one of the best collegiate choirs in the Southeast. MID-DAY MUSIC LE CHEMIN DE LA CROIX, OP. 29 MARCEL DUPRÉ THE COMPLETE ORGAN WORKS OF MAURICE DURUFLÉ Geoffrey Ward conductor Sunday, April 23 - 6:00 p.m. (note time) Free Admission Christ’s Passion has been depicted in countless works of art, music, literature, and theatre. Le Chemin de la Croix (The Stations of the Cross) offers a path through prayer and meditation to follow Christ’s suffering, death, and burial. Dupré’s composition on the Stations is a symphonic poem that conveys through music the suffering and agony of Christ’s Passion. He first improvised the work in 1931 and later wrote it down, performing it annually every Lent at Saint-Sulpice in Paris. Advent parishioner John Goodman has written his own poetry to be read in between each Station. On Palm Sunday, come experience and reflect upon one of the most spiritual and powerful organ works ever composed. This series is given free of charge with each program lasting thirty minutes.
