Each encaustic tile is unique and has its own
cultural value. It is an encaustic handcrafted
floor tile, recovered from the construction
rubble of Eixample apartments being
renovated.
Through
a
mixture
of
ignorance
and
market
pressure,
all
these tiles are being thrown away.
This means losing a piece of the
modernist and the classical period of
Barcelona city (from the end of 19th
century to the beginning of the 20th century).
After rescuing them, each tile has
undergone an individual cleaning and
restoration process to recover their original
dignity.

Barcelona is perhaps the place where the largest
concentration and variety of encaustic tiles can
be found. That is due to a double coincidence;
firstly, at the end of the 19th century Barcelona
outgrew its city walls and increased its size
by ten, thanks to the project envisioned by
the pioneering urban planner Ildefons Cerdà.
Secondly, the rise of Modernism took place
at this time. This influenced art, architecture,
furniture and much more.

PROCESS
Most of the tiles have seen more than a century
of Barcelona life. Our aim is to recover their
unique identity and this lost dignity. Each
individual piece is seen as a treasure and as such
each tile has undergone a careful cleaning and
restoration process, all done by hand and with
respect.

and that’s why
we treat them
as a special
HEXAGONAL TABLE, limited editions
From the last 4 years we are rescuing encaustic
tiles from the city of Barcelona. Since now we
have catalogued more than 150 different models,
and just 3 of them are hexagonal pieces.
Hexagonal tiles are very rare and unusual and
that’s why we treat them as a special treasures.
For these hexagonal tiles we have design a
limited edition of tables.
480 hexagonal tiles were rescued in an old
building of “plaça letamendi” and just 48 were
rescued from Muntaner street. So that we are
be able to offer a limited edition of 60 tables
from Letamendi and just 6 tables from Muntaner
street.

called Letamendi
These tiles were on the point of disappearing
forever from Barcelona when we found them.
480 tiles were rescued. They came from a
building which was being renovated at that
moment. The building is situated at Plaça
Doctor Letamendi and was built in 1900. These
hexagonal tiles were used in the corridors of the
typical-of-the-period elegant apartments.
In order to save and give new life to these
hexagonal tiles, we have created a limited edition
of 60 tables called Letamendi 1900.
More than a hundred years of footsteps are
reflected in the surface of each tile. More than
a century has passed since long-forgotten hands
from the Escofet Fortuny company handcrafted
each and every one.

A lots of times we arive too late and most of the
encaustic tiles are lost forever. This was the case
of this house located at Muntaner street and
builded in 1930 which had being renovated. All
the encaustic floor was removed and through
away. We could only keep 48 pieces with which
we have designed this serie.
This limited edition of just 6 tables should be
seen as a resistance movement against the slow
disappearance of our heritage.

FURNITURE
Following our philosophy of “rescued tile” we
have developed the Furniture series, which
reflects our core values: respect for history,
pureness of design, and simplicity.
‘Furniture’ is made up of 4 different models
made with a black painted steel structure
which shapes a pure and simple forms in order
to contrast and enhance the “art nouveau”
designs of the “rescued tiles”. The combination
of history, functionality and authenticity creates
these timeless pieces which can sit perfectly in
both modern and classic spaces
Each piece of “rescued tile” furniture is unique
because the tile combination is always different.
With all of our “rescued tile” furniture pieces we
enclose a brochure which authenticates the
origin of each tile. We believe that each piece of
furniture evokes the history of the old houses of
Barcelona.
