December 18th, 2016 St. John FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Fr. Jonathan Dellinger [email protected] In case of emergency En caso de emergencia 630-5847 Lectio Matthew 1:18–24 Finally Joseph wakes and does what he has been told to do. In the face of ridicule and marginalization, Joseph obeys. What a marvelous horizon opens up to Meditatio him and all of us as a result—much more expansive “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord than to “divorce her quietly.” had commanded him.…” I can just imagine Joseph lying awake at night. The Oratio woman he wants to marry is suddenly, obviously, Lord, I place the decisions I need to make and the with child. Mary had been away to visit her cousin problems I need to solve into your hands. Guide me, Elizabeth and had returned with no explanation for and I will trust you. her pregnancy. How could she have done this to him? What should he do? He loves her. He does not Contemplatio want to see her hurt. Night after sleepless night he Guide me, Lord, and I will trust you. searches the heavens for an answer. We also find ourselves at times in perplexing, heartbreaking situations that involve people we love and trust. In this narrative about Joseph, we find the steps for dealing with our perplexity and mending our hearts. First, Joseph acts with integrity in searching for God’s guidance in a seemingly no-win situation. He decides to divorce Mary quietly. It would be the best for them. He seeks God’s direction with a certain calmness. The angry grinding of our minds over the injustices we see brought against us can keep us awake at night. Joseph is at peace in his search. The angel sheds the light of God’s direction on Joseph’s situation. We can discover God’s intent through meditating on the Scriptures, consulting Church teachings, pondering the deeper meaning of events, seeking the guidance of a holy person. God will often ask us to do things that don’t make complete sense. He tells Joseph to marry a pregnant virgin because the child is from the Holy Spirit. That must have been as clear as mud to Joseph. He must have been used to experiencing God’s guidance to have immediately recognized God’s voice as he did. A certain type of peace comes when one deeply understands the ways of God, even when what the Lord commands is perplexing or unexpected. This experience comes from the habit of referring all our needs and decisions to the Lord. This is the "Gospel of God" that Paul celebrates in today's Epistle—the good news that "God is with us" in Jesus Christ. The sign promised to the House of David in today's First Reading is given in today's Gospel. In the virgin found with child, God himself has brought to Israel a savior from David's royal line (see Acts 13:22-23). Son of David according to the flesh, Jesus is the Son of God, born of the Spirit. He will be anointed with the Spirit (see Acts 10:38), and by the power of Spirit will be raised from the dead and established at God's right hand in the heavens (see Acts 2:33-34; Ephesians 1:20-21). He is the "King of Glory" we sing of in today's Psalm. The earth in its fullness has been given to Him. And as God swore long ago to David, His Kingdom will have no end (see Psalm 89:4-5). In Jesus Christ we have a new creation. Like the creation of the world, it is a work of the Spirit, a blessing from the Lord (see Genesis 1:2). In Him, we are saved from our sins, are called now "the beloved of God." All nations now are called to belong to Jesus Christ, to enter into the House of David and Kingdom of God, the Church. Together, through the obedience of faith, we have been made a new race—a royal people that seeks for the face of the God of Jacob. He has made our hearts clean, made us worthy to enter His holy place, to stand in His presence and serve Him. In the Eucharist, the everlasting covenant is renewed, the Advent promise of virgin with child—God with us—continues until the end of the age (see Matthew 28:20; Ezekiel 37:24-28). Scott Hahn, Ph.D.
