INDEPENDENT LEARNING SINCE 1975
Spanish I
This is an introductory-level course that is studied both with a textbook and online. The goal is to engage
students right from the start of each lesson and to have them feel confident in communicating in Spanish
at this beginning level. Each chapter contains sections on vocabulary, grammar, culture, cultural readings,
writing, and review exercises. The student has access to the Holt website which provides audio comprehension narratives and dialogues that complement the textbook, in addition to interactive exercises, learning
resources, and cultural activities.

Day 1
a)
Review the vocabulary on pages 18-19.
b) On page 24, the Gramática presents the forms for the verb ser (to be). Copy these forms in
your notebook, and begin the process of trying to memorize them. Read through the Spanish
sentences given as examples.
c)
Practice with Exercises 32-33 on pages 24-25.
d) In Exercise 34, follow the instructions and make sentences out of the groups of words given.
Day 2
a)
On page 26, check the explanation about punctuation marks in Spanish. Question marks and
exclamation points go at the beginning (upside down) and at the end of the sentence. Note,
too, how the ñ (with the tilde) is pronounced. Practice with Exercise 36.
b) For your writing assignment, describe in Spanish what you see in each of the three pictures in
Exercise 38 on page 27.
Day 3
a)
On pages 28-29, read the story ¿Quién será? Read aloud (for practice) the captions for the different pictures. More than one reading may be necessary. Can you figure out the answers to the
questions asked at the end?
b) As indicated at the top of page 30, listen to Track 10 of the audio. The exercise explains how
to recognize “cognates.” Follow the instructions for practice. Here, you do not need to write
out an assignment.

On page 32, the review for Chapter 1 begins. Practice with Exercises 2-3.
b) On page 33, listen to Track 12 of the audio.
c)
Use Exercise 7 for practice.
d) In Exercise 8, follow the instructions for writing a conversation in Spanish. Write out both
parts A and B.
Day 5
a)
On page 34, review the grammar explanations for the personal pronouns and the forms of the
verb ser (to be). Refer to your notebook.
b) Listen to Tracks 13-15 of the audio. Check the explanation on pronunciation.
c)

Prepare for the Chapter 1 test. Review the vocabulary on page 35.

Turn to pages 304-307, the Geocultura for La República Dominicana. View the various pictures
of the Dominican Republic and read the written captions.
b) What is the national sport of the Dominican Republic?
Day 2
a)
Go to pages 308-309. View the picture. This is a holiday.
b) ¿Quienes son las personas? ¿Que celebrant?
c)
On pages 310-311, make note of the new vocabulary, Part 1. Practice saying the words aloud,
and review.
Day 3
a)
On page 312, practice with Exercise 1, naming the holidays.
b) In Exercise 2, write out your answers, based on the pictures.
c)
Listen to Track 1 of the audio for Capítulo 9.
d) Practice with Exercise 3 on page 313. Can you place the expressions in the proper order?
e)
For your writing assignment, follow the instructions to Exercise 6, writing a short paragraph
(5-7 sentences), stating what your favorite holidays might be, and why.

Review the vocabulary on pages 310-311.
b) The Gramática on page 314 explains how to form the preterite tense with verbs from the second
and third conjugation, -er and -ir verbs. Make note of the example verbs. Study the endings.
c)
Can you translate the sample sentences?
d) Practice with Exercise 7.
e)
On page 315, complete Exercise 9 in writing. Follow the instructions. Make certain that the
verb endings agree with the subject or subjects.
Day 5
a)
The grammar box on page 316 summarizes and reviews the endings for the preterite tense.
Make note of the sample sentences.
b) Listen to Track 2 of the audio.
c)
Practice with Exercises 12-13.
d) On page 317, write out your answers for Exercise 15.
