Rules for making singular nouns plural

Rules for making singular nouns plural:
1. Add “s” to most nouns to form the plurals
2. Add “es” to form the plurals of nouns ending in s, x, z, ch and sh
3. Form the plurals of nouns ending in y preceded by a vowel by adding “s” (if the
vowel comes before y)
4. Form the plurals of nouns ending in y preceded by a consonant by changing the y to
“ies” (if the consonant comes before y)
5. Some plural nouns are not formed by adding s, es or ies. Here are some common
irregular plural noun examples. Consult a dictionary if you are unsure!









