Welcome to the 2004 Summer Season. Federer won in Hamburg and
Mauremo in Rome. The Millennium Cup kicks off on 22nd May. Entries
for our tournaments and applications for Wimbledon tickets are invited.
Subscriptions are now overdue. Your committee is working to increase
our membership and has decided, for this year only, to offer a 25%
discount for new members and a new, reduced membership fee for
couples. Please tell your friends and neighbours about us and help us to
find some more new members. Your usual friendly welcome will ensure
they enjoy being with us.

Some thoughts from the Secretary
Save our “Club Sessions”! These are: Wednesday and Friday
mornings (from 09.30), Saturday afternoons (from about 13.00 onwards)
and Sunday mornings (from 09,30). Woodfield used to be known as the
really friendly club where everyone played with whoever turned up at the
popular club sessions. This led to some very mixed, but usually most
enjoyable, doubles. Members raced to get on to the pegboard at 9.30 on
a Sunday morning. Even when three of our courts were shale, and often
not playable in the winter or needed watering and dragging in the
summer, the sessions were popular. Thanks to all-weather courts with
lighting, play extends throughout the week, but there is still demand for
old-style club play. Do support club days – If necessary, ring round and
make sure that a core of four is ready to play.

Telephone Numbers: I am currently working on a new list of members’ telephone numbers.
This should help to make contact. Please proof-read your own line and let me know of any
necessary corrections. If you are not on the list, have you paid your subscription? Do please
help me to get it right.
Club Tournament: A sign-up sheet will be circulated with this newsletter. Whatever your
standard, please “have a go”, and return your forms promptly. The new telephone list will
enable you to contact your opponents when the draw goes up. Please book a court in the diary
and play promptly, so that there is no backlog of matches to be played just before finals day on
Saturday 19th June.
Men's First Team
TIP: To achieve
consistency and
power on the
forehand, use good,
steady hip rotation.
The Men's first team have got off to an excellent start to the new season beating ('thrashing'
would be cruel BUT accurate!) Limpsfield, who had held us to a draw in the winter league. Paul
paired up with new member Tony Ayles, dropping only 7 games in 2 emphatic wins. Peter &
John were also in strident form, dropping only 12 games. A very good start against a strong
team who have caused us problems in the past. However, the greatest 'result' was Woodfield
not having to travel to the bowels of Surrey to play Limpsfield for the first time in 6 years!

In 2002 our Mixed Team achieved an 'historic' first in the Club's long history - they were
promoted to the Premiership Division. Expecting to quickly return to the lower division Michele,
Barbara, Arthur & Paul more than held their own against some pretty serious talent. No one was
more surprised than their Captain, Michele, & her players when our Chairman, Peter, broke the
news that they had WON Division D!!!! That's right WON! With Arthur no longer a member, its
going to be tough to stay in Division C – but not impossible. The impossible was getting to
Division D.
Coaching
Karin is busier than ever. From Monday mornings, when she takes an adult group session, right
through the week she is to be seen on the courts coaching individual players and groups of
youngsters. To book adult or children’s sessions, telephone her on 07946 431514.
Piotr Szule (Peter!) has now taken over the weekend coaching including the Brush Strokes
group on Sundays. Thanks to Bill Pain’s Millennium Award, Piotr will shortly be offering free
coaching to a squad of juniors at 4pm on Sundays. His contact number is:07793 272350.

The recent Quiz Night proved successful with 8 teams competing. The overall standard was high with all teams achieving over 60%. The lead shifted throughout
the night, however, three teams battled for the top two places with Polly's Team just
losing out for a place in the final by a couple of points. The battle ended up between
Peter's 'Bar Stewards (Peter, Michele, David & Huda) and 'The Bruce Forsythe
Experience' headed by Bobbie & Tony, who were ably joined by the very social,
Cathy, Suzi & Sean. The latter eventually won & celebrated as only that team would
know how - a celebratory glass of wine!
Michele & John provided a lovely meal that was more than worthy of the
entrance fee. Many thanks to all those members who entered, & particularly to their
guests who reinforced the numbers significantly. Also many thanks to the Bridge Club
for fielding a team - it was lovely to see you.

FINALS DAY 19th June
Club Vision
Your Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary met with Rebecca Owen,
acting Surrey CDO in March in the first follow-up Meeting to our initial Club Vision
assessment in May 2000. Karin was able to join the meeting for part of the time when
the club’s development plan was discussed in some detail.
Woodfield Grove has applied for assistance to support Karin’s conversion
course to obtain her UK LTA Coaching License as she is already a fully qualified PTR
coach. Once this is achieved, the club will be able to apply for more funding for
coaching programmes based at the club.
The meeting was useful as it gave us the opportunity to raise a number of
issues – including the cumbersome Chancellor’s business rate rebate and the
organisation of the Streatham Cup in recent years that has given cause for concern.
Rebecca also offered some suggestions as to how to help increase
membership over the coming months.

Surrey LTA Bridge League. Our team of Margery & Norman Levinson and Bill and
Brenda Pain ended the season as runners-up in the second league, being pipped at
the post by Surbiton, who also won all but one of their matches but achieved 36
points, compared to our 33. Geoff Doble joined us for the excellent dinner and silly
bridge at Wimbledon Club to celebrate the end of the season.
Knock Out Competition: Peter Risdon and Geoff Doble joined Bill and Brenda for
this tournament and enjoyed the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere and excellent
catering!
Supervised Bridge continues on term-time Tuesdays at 1pm. Detta and Peter
