The past month has seen all children (and staff!)
working hard to consolidate and extend the wealth of
learning from the autumn term. Part of this has been
complemented by an array of visits, for example to the
Little Angel Puppet Theatre and the Belle Époque
bakery. These visits have given children a wonderful
chance to become immersed in how organisations work
and to understand the relevance and importance of their
education in terms of plans for their own future. Our
website blog will be updated shortly in terms of our
Enterprise Education so please visit

Class and Umansky Class. The children never cease
to amaze me with their talent!
This month’s skill is Listening Carefully. Please help
support this focus. Talk with your child about how
important it is for their development as an individual as
well as for the rest of their lives.

Browne Class Assembly
We all gathered excitedly for the first class assembly of 2017. Browne Class sat like
consummate professionals as the audience of children, parents and carers entered the
hall.
With a totally confident introduction, in which it was hoped we would enjoy their assembly,
Browne Class niftily embarked on a full scale story-telling operation. All thirty children kept
100% together and regaled us with the mighty tale of Possum Magic. This charming tale
was communicated to us entirely from memory, with excellent diction, expression, a keen
sense of the unfolding drama and its humour, and a very complicated cornucopia of
complementary actions to boot! The entire story was remembered by the class without a
single prompt for Surina or Nancy. Browne Class children now have a wonderful arsenal
of story structure, with devices such as figurative language, from which they can now
confidently construct their own compositions.
This tour de force was complemented by a series of choreographed ‘dancelets’, composed
by each group of children, based on the theme of the sea and seahorses. The groups
showed how they could respond to changes in the music, whilst exhibiting skills such as
balancing, fine footwork, coordination, imaginative movement and flow.
Overall, Browne Class demonstrated how they have responded to our skills of the month:
working together, staying positive, leading and, for this term, using imagination. We all left
the hall with a cheery smile on our face; some children filed out trying to be seahorses as
they did so! Many thanks go to Browne Class for their impressive assembly and particular
thanks are due to Surina and Nancy, who enabled them all to be so impressive!
Pullman Class Assembly
Pullman Class got off to a brisk start with their class assembly, launching into a fabulously
imaginative array of Victorian machines, depicted through dance! The children
choreographed these completely by themselves, working successfully as a team and using
their imagination. The Industrial Revolution inspired all sorts of complex skills: balances,
coordination across a group and in pairs, and precise listening and response to match the
rhythm of the music. The result produced veritable cogs and wheels of an intriguing new
invention.
A rap/song then followed, which captured the sense of Victorian history excellently. This
comprised parts as well as call and response and was delivered with immaculate diction,
expression and a sense of humour. Declaring their love of school at the end of it, the
children led us neatly into a skit, written by them, of a typical Barnardo’s classroom. The
scene was confidently delivered and very amusing!
Alfred Noyes’ poem, The Highwayman, was then recited flawlessly, complete with suitable
actions, a real sense of the metre and clear diction again. This was a real tour de force!
Some children clarified the difference between metaphors and similes, supporting their
explanation with examples from the poem, and others shared their poetry compositions.
Finally we were treated to a sequence of play scripts, also written by the children, based on
the story of The Highwayman. These were sensitively constructed with a real sense of the
poem’s messages and characterisations. Well done!

facilitated such a successful presentation from all of the children.

Umansky Class Assembly
As the audience filed into Umansky Class’ assembly, the mood was set to an upbeat
version of Greensleeves, complete with seated disco moves. The children were in full
Tudor costume, including several regal ones, and so we knew we would be in for some fun
about Henry and his wives! We were not disappointed. Using the popular show, X Factor,
as a model, Umansky Class tweaked it to become Wife Factor. The judges duly
comprised, Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue although they were all dressed
in beautiful Tudor garb! Thus we were treated to all his wives one by one who came to the
front of the show and helped us to fully understand the sort of man Henry was and how his
wives fared.
The children showed enormous understanding of the period as well as showing empathy
for all sorts of characters from the time: the wives were brilliantly depicted, as was Henry;
Shakespeare came on to recite a sonnet; there was a real Tudor dance with all the moves
particular to the era; a very informative poem about the queens and their demise; a song –
Divorced, Beheaded and Died; and Greensleeves itself, sung beautifully accompanied by
effective actions.
The songs and poems were cleverly and skilfully interwoven throughout the Wife Factor,
demonstrating how well these children work together as a team, listening carefully and
supporting the action. The memory was formidable and their performance truly exceptional
and professional. There was even a tech team for the sound and visual effects! Confident
and imaginative, with a good dose of humour, Umansky Class put the smiles on our faces
for the rest of the day. Well done to the children and especially well done to Lily and
Maxine for bringing this production to its amazing fruition.

Fruit Snacks
Children in years three to six may wish to
bring in a snack for morning break. Please
help us avoid upset children by only
providing fruit for this snack – dried, or fresh
fruit is fine but no cereal bars/chocolate bars,
crisps, etc.
Thank you for your understanding and
support.
We know how tempting it is for children to experiment
with adornments but ask you please not to let your
child do this in school.
This can cause upset and jealousy as well as, in the
case of jewellery, present serious health and safety
problems.
Children are welcome to wear watches and stud
earrings – no hooped earrings of any kind are allowed.

WORRIES OR CONCERNS?
If you have any concerns, no matter how small, about your child, please
see their class teacher in the first instance. After school is the best time
to do this and you can also arrange an appointment via the school office.
Please do not feel you have to wait until parent conferences to discuss
matters about your child.
If you are not satisfied with the way in which your concern has been
addressed then do please make an appointment to see Tanya (Head
Teacher), Claire (Deputy Head Teacher), Bea (Assistant Head Teacher),
Olivia (Assistant Head Teacher and SEND Leader), or Sophie (Assistant
Head Teacher).
Collection from Kids’ Club
BICYCLE MANNERS
Thank you to all who enable Tina,
Yvonne and Elvira to finish their
work on time by 6 pm in Kids’ Club.
If you are late three times in any
one term you will not be able to
send your child/ren to Kids’ Club
until further notice. There is an
immediate fine of £20 per child
(including siblings) to pay if you do
not collect by 6 pm. This increases
by £1 every minute (per child), so
please make sure you are at the
door before then. Thank you.
Thank you to those parents and
carers who always dismount and
leave their bicycles in our pods
away from all the children during
the morning and afternoon rush.
There is a real danger of them
falling on small children in
particular. We are also grateful
to those parents who remind their
children not to ride their scooters
and bicycles at any time through
the school grounds.
Playground Equipment
Thank you to those parents
and carers who remember to
keep their children off the
playground structures in the
morning and at the end of the
day.
Parking in Sable Street
We understand that some of you may
need to collect your children by car; if
you do please help us maintain good
neighbourly relations by making use
of public parking spaces and not
blocking exits. The Sable Street gate
will close at 9.05 a.m. and 3.45 p.m.
every day so please be mindful of this.
