Awe! Alaska
June 4 – 13, 2016
Day 1
Fly to Anchorage, Alaska. Your greeter will arrange a shuttle to the hotel. Early evening get together in hotel before dinner
on your own.
Day 2
The highlight of our tour of Anchorage will be the Alaska Native Heritage Center. A visit to the Ulu Factory and some free
time in downtown Anchorage will also be included in our day’s activities as well as a trolley tour of Anchorage. After dinner
on your own, we need to turn in early for our next day’s events. Meal included: breakfast
Day 3
Rise and shine (not hard when you are in the land of the midnight sun) so we can catch the Alaska Railroads Gold Star Train
to Seward. The half-day journey will take us through mountains and near the water and give us a chance to view some of
Alaska’s wildlife from our dome car. Upon arrival in Seward and after lunch on your own, we will visit the amazing Alaska Sea
Life Center as introduction to this part of Alaska – the Kenai Peninsula. We will then travel across the Kenai to the town of
Homer, Alaska – the end of the road, literally, for a two night stay. Meal included: breakfast on train
Day 4
This day is for you to plan. Simply do a little beach combing, walk among the quaint shops on the Homer Spit or enjoy an
optional add-on including: an airplane ride to view the volcanic mountains and possibly see Alaskan brown bears; a water
taxi ride around Kachemak Bay; a ferry ride to Halibut Cove for lunch or dinner. Many of the options must be booked with us
by the end of March, 2016. Meal included: breakfast
Day 5
Today we will travel to the old Russian village of Kasilof along with other sites on our way to Whittier. The Whittier Inn sits on
beautiful Prince William Sound and there are areas to walk and explore this unique little town. The hotel has a restaurant and
great lobby for gazing at the Sound and all the boat traffic at the nearby marina. Meal included: breakfast
Day 6
Ever wished you could have your own yacht? For today your dream can come true as we board our chartered boat for a
once in a lifetime cruise of Prince William Sound! As we glide across the sound we will visit Columbia Glacier and watch
for fantastic Alaskan wildlife and sea-life along the way. We will have narration along the way, lunch and a warm snack.
Definitely bring your binoculars and zoom lenses for your cameras. Our harbor side hotel in Valdez will be our home for the
night as we are “hugged” by the Chugach Mountains that surround the area. Meals included: breakfast, lunch
Day 7
All aboard our motorcoach for a day long journey through some of Alaska’s most spectacular scenery. We travel the
Richardson Highway via the Copper Valley which took many miners to the gold fields and will go to America’s largest
national park, Wrangell/St. Elias National Park, with a stop at the visitor’s center. Then, we turn onto the Glenn Highway
which travels to Palmer & Wasilla via the Chugach Mountains and Matanuska Valley. There will be plenty of picture stops
along the way. We will visit The Musk Ox Farm and then go to Palmer for dinner and Wasilla for the night. Meals included:
breakfast, dinner
Day 8
We continue our travels north to Alaska’s most famous national park, Denali! Before we check into our hotel, we will be
treated to a jet boat tour into the Alaskan bush with narration by locals who know what it takes to survive in this climate of
extremes. The three hour boat tour makes stops for animal sightings and cultural spots. Meal included: breakfast
Day 9
Today we head deep into Denali National Park to really experience the vastness and grandeur of this crown jewel of America.
We will be served lunch at the end of the road in the Kantishna Road House and have a snack on the way back to our cabins.
The driver/guide/naturalist will help point out the sights and animals along the way. You will also have the opportunity to
pan for gold at Kantishna. Meals included: breakfast, lunch
Day 10
Fairbanks is the farthest North major city in Alaska and the jumping off point for our arctic adventure. We will see some of
the sights around town including the University of Alaska and The Pioneer Park. Flights from Fairbanks to the lower 48 states
usually leave late at night or early, early in the morning, so we will go to the airport for flights home after dinner. Please do
not make flights home before 8PM. Flights home with new friends and fond memories of your Awe! Alaska. Meals included:
breakfast, dinner
