Kanagawa Prefecture
Kanagawa Prefecture is Japan’s largest industrial region, and the heart of the Tokyo metropolitan
area. Numerous domestic and foreign corporations boasting leading-edge technologies have set up
international bases for research, development and manufacturing operations in Kanagawa. Nearly
1,100 research facilities are concentrated in the prefecture, as Kanagawa has cemented its position as
top of the class in terms of numbers of researchers and engineers. Kanagawa leads Japan as the capital
of technology and expertise, home to major institutes engaged in leading-edge, creative research and
technological development, including the Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology, a successful
cooperative venture linking the private, academic and public sectors.
Kanagawa Prefecture features unequalled transportation access to both domestic and international
destinations. Ample commercial facilities and urban convenience, as well as reasonable office rent in
comparison to central Tokyo, are just a few of the attractions of this region. Already, 427 foreign companies have set up operations in Kanagawa (“Foreign Affiliated Companies in Japan 2008;” Toyo Keizai,
Inc.), 282 of which are functional headquarters.
Since the port of Yokohama was opened as the first international port of Japan in 1859, Kanagawa
Prefecture has continued to embrace and accept foreign cultures. Kanagawa is known as a region
where foreigners can enjoy both private and work life.

Japan’s preeminent cosmopolitan centers, second only to Tokyo. Yokohama is home to major facilities,
including distribution networks based in one of Japan’s largest international ports and several international convention centers. Convenient to Narita and Haneda airports, and a center for foreign company
incubation facilities, Yokohama offers everything needed for companies to pursue global activities. Of
course, Yokohama City is also located right on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line (Shin Yokohama Station), as
well as near the Tomei Expressway and other major rail and highway networks.
Numerous IT firms and R&D facilities (including global electronics manufacturers) are based in the
Yokohama area. Situated near the coast, the Yokohama Science Frontier is an industrial center for
biotech and other research institutes, including Japan’s well-known RIKEN research organization.
Rich in natural beauty and a temperament of accepting other cultures, Yokohama City offers a pleasant and cosmopolitan lifestyle.
