Windsurfing, waterskiing, fishing,

Day Trips
Bear Lake
60 minutes north of Evanston are
the turquoise-blue waters of this
popular lake. It is a nice place to
swim, boat or fish in the summer and
snowmobile in the winter.
Bear River Lodge
30 minutes south of Evanston,
800-559-1121. ATV riding,
snowmobiling, cross country skiing,
fishing and cabins.
Flaming Gorge
90 minutes east of Evanston on I-80
is Flaming Gorge, a beautiful reservoir
on the Green River. The reservoir
has great fishing and the surrounding
national recreation area is popular for
hunting, camping and hiking.
Fort Bridger State
Historical Site
30 minutes east of Evanston is an old
fort that was established in 1843
by Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez.
Those who passed through included
mountain men, Indians, Mormon
pioneers, the U.S. Army and the
Pony Express.
Fossil Butte
National Monument
60 minutes north of Evanston, 307-8774455. The monument protects rare
plant and animal fossils from a lake
that covered the area 50 million years
ago. The modern visitor center, open
year-round, contains many famous
fish fossils.
Piedmont Kilns
30 minutes southeast of Evanston.
Piedmont kilns, built in the 1860s,
provided coke for Union Pacific
steam engines and charcoal for
ore smelters in Utah. According to
legend, Butch Cassidy buried stolen
loot in this area.
Wasatch-Cache National
Forest/Mirror Lake
Scenic Byway
The scenic byway is a ­­paved
highway that begins in Evanston
and winds 78 miles over the Uinta
Mountains to Kamas, Utah. It
crosses a 10,620-foot-high pass
open only in the summer. The
adjacent national forest is popular
for hiking, camping, snowmobiling
and cross-country skiing.
