Shea Burgeson EDU 432 03/22/11 Video Lesson Making Money Grade Level: 2nd Purpose: Students will be able to explore half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies by physically making common dollar and cents amounts, such as $1.50, $1.25, $1.00, $.80, $.75, $.25, $.50, and $.40, with toy money pieces. Through exploring the coins on their own and seeing how their peers find the amounts, they will be finding and discovering multiple ways to use coins to make money amounts. Student Objectives: 1) To help students to become more familiar with U.S. coins (half dollars, quarters dimes, nickels and pennies) 2) To give students practice with using coins to make dollar/cent amounts 3) To help students see that money amounts can be made in several different ways GLCE’s: • M.UN.02.07 Materials Needed: • Visualizer • Student Money Bags Ø with fake coins that contain: 3 half dollars, 4 quarters, 4 dimes, 4 nickels, and 5 pennies • Pencils • Writing Journals/Lined Paper Procedure: • Have students seated at their desks in the room and turn on the visualizer • Ask the class what they did in math yesterday v Student responses should include: made money books, learned about the different coins, etc • Put a quarter on the visualizer and ask the class how much money I have • • • • • • • • • • v Student should respond with $.25 Ask the class if this is the only way that I could possibly make $.25 v Student should respond with “No” Ask a volunteer for another way to make $.25 v The volunteer should respond with one of the following: 2 dimes and a nickel, 1 dime and 3 nickels, or 1 dime, 2 nickels and 5 pennies v Explain that there are more ways to make $.25 cents and give another example (not already given) for the class Ø Show this on the visualizer Tell the class that they are going to be using coins, like mine, to show me ways how to make specific money amounts v Make sure to let them know that not everyone is going to come up with the same way to make an amount Have a volunteer pass out a bag of money to each student v They are numbered for each student in the class v Tell the students not to open the bags until everyone has one Have the students empty the contents of their bag on the front of their desk v Tell them to place their coins on their nametags so they have space to work on making different amounts v Have them NOT touch the coins until told to do so Ask the class to show me how to make $.40, using coins from their bags v Call on a volunteer to come up to the visualizer and share how he/she made $.40 v Ask for another volunteer who made $.40 a DIFFERENT way Ø Have this student come forward and share his/her way of making $.40 Ø Call on one more volunteer to come up and share how he/she made $.40 Tell the class that there are still more ways to make $.40 and not just the three ways that we discovered in class v Let them know that you sat down and came up with 2 more ways to show $.40 using the coins v Show one of those ways Ask the class to show me how to make $.50, using coins from their bags v Call on a volunteer to come up to the visualizer and share how he/she made $.50 v Ask for another volunteer who made $.50 a DIFFERENT way Ø Have this student come forward and share his/her way of making $.50 Ø Call on one more volunteer to come up and share how he/she made $.50 Tell the class that there are still many more ways to make $.50 and not just the three ways that we discovered in class v Let them know that you sat down and came up with 7 more ways to show $.50 using the coins v Show one of those ways Ask the class to show me how to make $.80, using coins from their bags v Call on a volunteer to come up to the visualizer and share how he/she made $.80 v Ask for another volunteer who made $.80 a DIFFERENT way • • • • • • Ø Have this student come forward and share his/her way of making $.80 Ø Call on one more volunteer to come up and share how he/she made $.80 Tell the class that there are still many more ways to make $.80 and not just the three ways that we discovered in class v Let them know that you sat down and came up with 6 more ways to show $.80 using the coins v Show one of those ways Ask the class to show me how to make $1.00, using coins from their bags v Call on a volunteer to come up to the visualizer and share how he/she made $1.00 v Ask for another volunteer who made $1.00 a DIFFERENT way Ø Have this student come forward and share his/her way of making $1.00 Ø Call on one more volunteer to come up and share how he/she made $1.00 Tell the class that there are still many more ways to make $1.00 and not just the three ways that we discovered in class v Let them know that you sat down and came up with 7 more ways to show $1.00 using the coins v Show one of those ways Have the students pull out their journals and a pencil Tell the class that I want them to find more amounts for me in as many ways as possible and to record them in their journal v Tell them to use their coins to make the amounts so they can see it instead of just trying to do it in their heads v Have them draw the coins with the labels in it (“h” for half-dollar, “q” for quarter, “d” for dime, “n” for nickel and “p” for penny) v Tell them to at least come up with three different ways, but encourage more v Write the following amounts on the board: $.75, $1.25 and $1.50 Have the students get to work and walk around the room to monitor progress v If a student is stuck on finding ways to make a specific amount, assist them in doing so Evaluation: When students are done working, collect their journals to look at the different coin combinations that they used to make the money amounts. Make sure each student has at least 3 different, correct, ways to make the money amounts. This will ensure full credit. If a student has less than 3 ways to make a specific amount, return the journal to him/her so it can be completed. If a student has more than 3 ways to make a specific amount, reward the excellent work with a sticker of some sort, or give the student a different kind of a reward. Once the journals are looked at, return them to the students to go back in their desks.
