Germany, Japan, & Turkey Unit 6, SSWH 15 b & c Nationalism • A belief that people should be loyal to their nation • A force that tore apart old empires • Helped create new nations • Opposed by conservatives German States • 39 German states formed the loose German Confederation (1815) – in Austria & Prussia • Prussia, mostly German, used nationalism to help unify Wilhelm I & Bismarck • 1861, Wilhelm I takes throne of Prussia, Otto von Bismarck was his Prime Minister • Bismarck’s Realpolitik: tough power politics with no room for idealism • Bismarck created a unified Germany (1871) by “blood & iron” & king Wilhelm I was crowned Kaiser (1871) • Bismarck Expands Prussia: - Gained Schleswig & Holstein from victory over Denmark - 7 Wks War: Prussia & Austria (Prussia won, gained land) - Franco-Prussian War: Caused the rest of independent German states to unify (created Germany) Meiji & Japan • Japan’s young Emperor Meiji, Mutshito, took control of govt • Japan became modernized • 1870-1910s, Japan industrialized & a modern economy • Attempt to increase power; got rid of foreigner’s rights (extraterritorial) Japanese Victories • Sino-Japanese War: China & Japan fought over ports & Korea (Japan won, gained Manchuria) • Russo-Japanese War: Fought over Russia in Manchuria, Treaty of Portsmouth: Japan won land, Russia had to move out of Manchuria & Korea • Japan, 1910, annexed Korea, harsh rulers Young Turks • Group who fought for reforms in the Ottoman Empire • Turks wanted rights for all who lived within the empire
