Thread Various threads for top-stitching (see notes re Sewing machine) General Requirements Iron - Clover Mini Type iron only (refer to Page 13 of Symposium Registration Booklet ) Medium rotary cutter (I like the 18 mm and 28 mm sizes which are optional) Cutting mat at least 12” X 18” Scissors: regular (embroidery optional) Black Ultra Fine Sharpie plus regular Fine Sharpie Masking tape - beige Pencil Exacto knife with fine blade Ironing pad to use for fusing: A Suggestion from Lenore: Make yourself a small ironing pad by cutting a piece of foam core an appropriate size for your travel bag and cover it with cotton batting attached with a hot glue gun on the back of the foam core. Waste sack (very messy technique) Paint brushes: ½" angular, ¼" angular, 1/8" angular, 0 small. Look for very very small angular brushes if you can't find these exact numbered brushes. This is a good mix of sizes from very very small to medium. Painting is demonstrated in this class. Students can begin to paint on their projects if they have finished fusing them so bring brushes if you think you might want to do this. N.B. Lenore does not share her brushes Sewing Machine if Time Allows (usually no sewing is accomplished in these classes) Walking foot for machine Free-motion sewing foot for machine Non-slip sewing gloves for free-motion top-stitching if desired Projects should be no more than 30” on the longest side, a good size for a beginner’s design. It is ok to bring a larger project if you are motivated but you may not finish it in class!! A photo to work from for your project; colour poster size print out (see instructions BELOW for poster size printing on your own computer) of your project about 30” on the longest side is good PLUS a small 8" X 10" colour photo to work from; contact Lenore for more information if needed on your project design or if you need help to decide if your photo is appropriate for this type of project. One of Lenore's more complex patterns can also be used if you don't have your own photo; Lenore will print out a photo for you of your own if you are having a problem printing out your own. Please contact her at [email protected] or call me at 989-708-9390. Photo hints: When looking for your photograph try to find pictures without lots of negative space which means not a huge amount of sky or water or anything that takes up a large amount of the design without anything in it. Look for pictures with focal points like a bird, flower, boat, truck, for example. The more little things in your design the more pieces that will have to be fused which means the more time to finish the design like windows in buildings. Foliage and gardens are difficult to create because of the scarcity of fine textural green prints and small floral prints. You can send me a copy of your photo if you want any help with your photo choice at [email protected]. I will also print out your photo for you if you are unable to do it. If you want me to print it for you I will need a photo with a large amount of memory for enlarging. Let me know if you don’t understand what this means. Remember that you can also use one of my patterns for your project if you can’t find a photo to use. Print Your Photo on Your Computer 1. Go to www.blockposters.com and print out your photo in whatever size you choose. 2. Follow the Step-wise instructions as noted. Do not use the Download button below the step buttons. 3. Click on Step One. Click on the Browse button next to the blank and choose your photo. Then click on Continue. 4. On Step Two you will decide how large you want the photo. Choose how many pages wide you want your photo to print. This will determine the size of your photo. Click on Continue. 5. Next on Step Three you click where it says to Download a PDF file containing your photo. Your picture will open up and then you can simply click on the printer at the upper left and print it out. Use Presentation Paper to print on. It makes a great copy and is not as expensive as photo paper and not as light as regular paper.
