HP StorageWorks ESL E-Series tape
library
pre-installation site survey
The purpose of this document is to facilitate the delivery and installation of the HP StorageWorks
ESL E-Series tape library. Please review library unpacking instructions available from
http://www.hp.com/support/manuals before completing this survey document.
This Pre-installation site survey must be completed prior to installation of the tape library for the following
reasons:
• Advance planning is necessary to make sure that the library can be received, unpacked, moved
to the installation site, and installed.
• A tape library fully populated with 24 tape drives weighs approximately 1350 lbs. (612 kg).
Each cabinet occupies a footprint of 30 x 50 inches (76 x 127 cm), and is 75 inches (191
cm) tall. CLM libraries require an additional 1 inch between cabinets and 52 inches (130 cm)
to the left of the primary cabinet (as you face the front of the library) for use during installing
and servicing of the CLM library.

• The tape library is rated: 200-240VAC, 50-60Hz, 8A, 1600W.
• Library power requirements may require modification of the facility’s existing power capabilities
by a qualified electrician. The required wall outlet for the United States and Canada is shown in
Figure 3 on page 4. The dedicated outlet and a 20 amp circuit breaker must provide power to
one library only. Outside North America, replace the supplied power cord with a harmonized 3
x 1.5 mm2 power cord that is approved by the country where used, and install the appropriate
wall outlet. For a listing of power cords available from HP, see the product QuickSpecs available
from http://www.hp.com/go/automated.

11. For LTO4 tape drives, is the correct number of ports available on an FC switch in
your SAN (one port for every LTO4 tape drive)?
12. Has the equipment location/arrangement been planned? (power
source/host/library/cabling).
13. Is service and traffic clearance provided (ceiling height/sprinkler heads/cable
racks)? Refer to the Site Requirement section of the unpacking instructions for floor
space requirements).
14. For a CLM library, is there enough room for all of the cabinets, 1 inch of space
between the cabinets, and 52 inches (130 cm) of clear space to the left of the primary
cabinet (as you face the front of the library)?

21. Are the temperature, humidity, and airborne contamination at the installation site
controlled?
22. Has a qualified application backup software been installed on the host? (Please
refer to the product QuickSpecs for software compatibility information.)
23. Has access to the customer site been provided to complete this survey?
NOTE:
If any survey questions are answered "No", there may be a delay in library shipment. Please refer
to Table 9.

Draw a map in Figure 4 showing the route the library will follow from the receiving dock to the
installation site. Note any potential obstacles such as steps, ramps, carpet, thresholds, elevator
size and weight ratings, raised floor weight ratings, and rough surfaces. Confirm the installation
site selection is appropriate for the size and weight of the library.

Note any unusual detrimental conditions that exist at the installation site in the table below. Consider
temperature, humidity, and airborne contamination conditions.
