Australian Fathers Need
Support
• There are over 300,000 babies delivered each year
• Mothers have the well established Mum’s Groups, however, there is
no equivalent for Dads
• At the time of starting a family, many fathers become extremely
isolated
• In too many instances, isolation in men leads to significant and critical
issues such as family violence, depression, anxiety, alcoholism,
problem gambling, substance abuse and
• These issues facing fathers cost the economy an estimated $30.8
billion each year
• We believe a national Dads Group network can make a positive lasting
impact to the community and economy
Identifying the need
Isolation is a Critical Issue for 30-40 Year Old Men
Social isolation in men
accelerates in their early thirties
when many are starting families.
This is when it is most important
to strengthen communities
around men.
Organisations like Dads Group
Inc provide that crucial
connection to community at this
time.

Identifying the need
BUT Men Do Not See Isolation as a Critical Issue
Isolation is one of THE major
factors impacting depression,
anxiety, substance abuse and
other critical issues.
However, men do not see this
as an important issue.

This needs to be addressed.
* Research by Roy Morgan highlights that AFL supporters are 49% more likely to gamble than the general population

Meet them where they are…
• Over 95% of new fathers use
FaceBook or online apps
• Thousands of searches a day return
nothing for new fathers in their area
• DGI is changing this through
collaboration with Councils, MCH
and Community organisations
How do fathers
learn to parent?
Man with a Pram
• Dads Group Inc. Created MWAP to
engage new fathers and families
• It was an overwhelming success in
developing social connectedness
and community
• DGI now strategically use MWAP
to connect across new
communities
What we do and
how we do it…
• Dads Group Inc. aims to positively
impact tens of thousands of fathers
around the country
• We do this by connecting fathers
with a community partner in their
region via a Dads Group portal such
as a Rotary club
• These community partners host an
event for the new fathers and help
them establish their own Dads
Group or join an existing Dads
Group
What we do and how
we do it…
• The Dads Groups are held periodically
(weekly/monthly/quarterly) and encourage fathers
and their infants to get together as organised by the
chosen community partner
• The Dads Group digital platform connects the
various family and community health organisations
to give fathers direct access to relevant programs,
information and support in their local area
• This approach gives new dads a place to connect
and a sense of belonging. It also reduces replication
of services and increases the impact of great
programs already designed for fathers and families.
We Have a Solution:
Community as a Methodology
