Heathrow Engineering British Airways Engineering is one of the world's leading aircraft maintenance businesses. Not only do we provide full support for the entire British Airways fleet which has over 300 aircraft, we also serve a number of other international airlines including many of our alliance partners. This means that the 1,000 flights that are operated each day will be ready for flying. The different areas of engineering below have opportunities for work experience. British Airways Component Engineering Engineers at BACE workshops provide repair and overhaul capability to a broad range of components to support the fleet of British Airways Aircraft. Capability ranges include complex Power generation units, Fuel components, Pneumatics components, Hydraulics components and Wheels and Brakes. There are also specialist processes that take place in the workshops, which include welding, machining and painting. In this placement work experience students, will have the opportunity to shadow engineers in the workshop, many of who are world experts in their field whilst they repair and overhaul components. You will be exposed to a variety of daily occurrences, whether this is repairing a small fuel pump or the testing a complex Integrated Drive Generator. You will get to see first-hand how the functions of this department contribute towards BA's excellent safety record. Fleet Support Unit Fleet Support Unit are equipped to maintain B767 and Airbus 319/320/321 aircraft, both in minor and casualty tasks, with the additional capability to take on most heavy maintenance tasks and structural repairs. We recover aircraft and move damaged or incident involved aircraft quickly and efficiently to enable normal airport operations to resume as soon as possible. In this placement, you will have the opportunity to shadow engineers in the hangar, and see first-hand how important day-to-day operations are. As the repairs are not planned, you will be exposed to a variety of daily occurrences and will support the team to enable our aircraft to carry out their routes. British Airways Distribution Centre All aircraft materials have to be checked before going into storage. Our warehouse inspects all aircraft materials to make sure they are airworthy and compliant to regulatory standards. The warehouse is also responsible for distributing aircraft components worldwide to BA hangars to ensure that planes can be serviced and fixed when they reach their destination. You will gain a great understanding of Airworthiness regulations and procedures, an overview of dangerous goods processing and general warehouse management. This includes receipting, binning and issuing of aircraft components. You will get the chance to shadow our colleagues in the warehouse, and will learn about the different components of a plane. British Airways Inventory Management Inventory Management are responsible for managing the supply of aircraft spares required to maintain our various fleets. Working to our planned regular maintenance checks and some unforeseen requirements, it is our role to ensure that any spares that are required are available to ensure the punctual operation of our fleet. In this placement, you will be working alongside our expediting team, gaining valuable experience of how to manage internal and external suppliers in a professional and assertive manner, in order to maintain availability to BA's high standards. You will learn how to think on your feet and look at many different solutions to one problem, and make an informed choice of the best option available. This posting will also give you the experience interacting with other internal areas of BA Engineering and Fleet Planning. New Aircraft Group Base Operations Engineers in the New aircraft Group in TBA provide operational maintenance support for both Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Capability ranges include engine changes, structural repairs, component changes, modifications, servicing and entry into service inputs. Our staff are highly motivated and fully committed to providing a fully serviceable fleet of aircraft to support our worldwide operation. In this placement you will have the opportunity to shadow engineers in both our hangar facility and base ramp areas whilst they maintain our state of the art fleet of aircraft. On any one day you could walk into an engine change, a structural repair, a trouble shooting procedure or maintenance clear up input, or in fact just about any maintenance activity applicable to the aircraft type!
