Data for Dec 18 BOT Study Session.docx
Hello Dr. Perez,
Attached is the data for the Dec. 18 th Board Study Session. In addition to the high school data
(which is on pages 3 and 4), I also included a 10 year history of Fall and Spring enrollments at LAMC
(page 1) and the demographic profile of our students from last fall (page 2). I’d like to point out that
the data on pages 3 and 4 is almost exactly the same – the difference is only in the projections for
high school graduates (for 2012-2013 to 2015-2016) and enrollments (for 2013-2014 to 20152016). In both cases I used the high school enrollment data for 2012-2013 and applied attrition
rates to the number of students enrolled in each grade to predict their enrollment the following
year in the next grade. On page 3 I used attrition rates based on the attrition of students from one
grade to the next between 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 (e.g., I used the percentage of 9th graders in
2011-2012 that continued on to be 10 th graders in 2012-2013, and applied it to the number of 9th
graders in 2012-2013 to predict how many would be 10 th graders in 2013-2014). On page 4 I
instead applied the average of the attrition rates between the grade levels from the 5 previous
years (rather than just from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013). Both ways of doing the projections predict
fewer numbers of high school seniors and graduates in 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 than
we’ve seen in the past, but the projections on page 4 are lower than those on page 3 because
historically there was greater attrition on average between grade levels than was seen in just the
prior year. I know this is a bit confusing, but hopefully this gets you what you need. Please let me
know if you have any questions.
Best,
Sarah
