COOL THOUGHTS
FOR WARM DAYS...
AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ISSUE BY NEFF SALES DIRECTOR, MIKE JARRETT
With warm, sunny days and long,
cool evenings, thoughts turn to dining
al fresco. The barbeque has been dusted
off and fired up, the wine has been
chilled and the food is ready for the
great outdoors!
In the height of summer, the fridge takes on an
even greater role, making sure our food stays
fresh and safe. Whilst my prowess on the open
flame may make some top chefs wince, at least
the meat has been carefully stored at the perfect
temperature in my Neff fridge. Chilled wines, ice and chilled water on tap – with fresh salad and vegetables
– all combine to make the outdoor event a memorable one.
With the introduction of more cooling models, Neff has expanded its repertoire in this sales arena.
The new CoolDeluxe range of products really is the very best in class. And with VitaFresh® capabilities,
supported by a nationwide advertising campaign, there are vital sales opportunities to be had. Read more
about these incredible new models on pages 3 and 4 of this issue and talk to your Area Business Manager
for a great display deal.
As you know, the Neff Sales Team attends regular product knowledge training sessions (as we all should!).
During a recent trip to our worldwide extractor hood production facility in Bretten (also home to the
famous Neff Oven factory), we were impressed to witness the personal care taken in the handling of the
Neff extractor hoods as they passed down the production line. The factory team take real pride in what
they produce and with a workforce so committed to their customers, my team and I were inspired to
sell even more of the excellent range of models we offer. The crucial aspect of the correct hood ducting
dimensions and specification were also highlighted and I urge all our dealers to focus on ensuring the
correct components are used. Your Area Business Manager has more details.
NEFF NEWS continues to widen its already broad appeal. It’s always good to hear how dealers are
reading the articles and gleaning new ideas to improve their Neff business. Two more excellent accounts
are featured this month with Sigma 3 from South Wales and Built In Kitchen Appliances in Liverpool. Also
in this issue are more awards for the brand and Jon Crane’s proudest moment when he receives his TOP
Award for 2009.
With the market improving and our best ever June result on record, I want to take this opportunity to
thank you personally for your continued business.
Enjoy reading this issue of NEFF NEWS – outdoors in the sunshine hopefully!

HOT NEW COOLING
APPLIANCES FOR
SUMMER
FRESH THINKING FOR FRESHER FOOD
Summer is finally here and with it comes a surge in
sales of cooling appliances. New this year from Neff
is a superb collection of luxury cooling appliances
for full integration. The CoolDeluxe range takes fresh
food preservation still further, with innovative new
‘fresher food’ technology combined with first-class
energy savings that are as good as you get.
This outstanding new range consists of five models: two
fridges K8115 & K8315, two freezers G8120 & G8320 and
one combined fridge/freezer K8345. All five models boast
a top A++ energy rating for significant savings on electricity.
Great for the environment and a good selling point as energy
savings mean lower bills!
Full details of all these fully integrated cooling appliances can
be found in the Neff Collection Brochure on pages 230/232
but here’s a handy reference guide to the highlights of these
impressive new models.
MORE CAPACITY
Changes to fundamental design, such as moving the condenser
to the base of the unit, has freed up valuable space for
more interior storage in the CoolDeluxe range. As a result,
the K8315 fridge has a massive 306-litre capacity, while its
coordinating freezer G8320 holds 213 litres; that’s 25% more
freezing capacity than current built in models.
ENERGY SAVINGS
All five models in the new CoolDeluxe range have top energy
ratings of A++ for significant savings in energy consumption
and utility bills.
INTELLIGENT COOLING SYSTEM
Numerous sensors on the CoolDeluxe fridges and freezers
detect when food is being loaded. As a result, these models
automatically adjust the cooling power according to the
amount of food inside and temperature outside. Ideal for
storing or freezing large amounts as this innovative system is
around 30% faster than other models around.
DYNAMIC COOLING
This system provides an even temperature throughout
the fridge, creating ideal conditions everywhere, even after
opening the door.
ELECTRONIC TOUCH CONTROL
The K8345 integrated combination fridge/freezer features
separate controls so you can set the two compartments
individually. This provides exact temperature control, down to
the degree.
3
CoolDeluxe fridge/freezer K8345
EasyLift shelf on the CoolDeluxe fridges and SoftClose doors
VITAFRESH® WITH HUMIDITY CONTROL
®
All three fridges include special VitaFresh compartments
which work independently from the rest of the appliance. Set
at 0°C, they are comprised of 2 zones: the dry zone (at 50%
humidity level to keep meat and fish fresh) and the humidity
zone (at 90% humidity to extend the life of vegetables, salad,
cheese and fruit). Both zones are designed to preserve the
nutrients and vitamins and keep the food fresher for up to
3 times longer.
TELESCOPIC SHELVING
All the drawers in the fridges are on a Telescopic FlexiRail®
shelving system, like the top of the range Neff ovens. Not only
does this allow easy glide in and out, but also easy access to
the food at the back of the fridge at all times. Less wastage as
leftover food often gets forgotten at the back.
AIRFRESH FILTER
An AirFresh filter in the VitaFresh® compartments on the
CoolDeluxe fridges prevents smells from crossing over to the
rest of the fridge.
LED INTERIOR LIGHTING
The LED lighting positioned at both the sides and the front of
the fridges keep energy usage at a minimum while illuminating
the whole fridge in an even glow. Shelves are equally
illuminated to ensure that you can see right to the back of
the fridge, even when fully stocked. LED lighting lasts for the
lifetime of the appliance, so never needs replacing. No more
bulbs!
EASYLIFT SHELVES AND SOFTCLOSE DOORS
With the dual built in benefits of EasyLift shelves and a
SoftClose door system, each appliance in the CoolDeluxe
range guarantees a streamlined appearance and excellent
accessibility.
2-YEAR FREE WARRANTY
Like all Neff appliances, all five models in the CoolDeluxe
range boast a 2-year free warranty on all parts and labour.
HOW NOT TO WASTE FOOD...
CHOOSE VITAFRESH® FROM NEFF!
Did you know that we throw away a staggering
3.6 million tonnes of food every year in this country?
If food is stored more efficiently in the fridge and
freezer, this wastage could be significantly reduced.
After all, how many of us can honestly say we never
waste any food?
When talking to customers and trying to sell the
advantages of a premium refrigeration appliance from
Neff’s new CoolDeluxe range, it is worth spending a bit
of time explaining the concept of the VitaFresh®
compartment, as described above.
The principle of VitaFresh® is based upon the desire to
prolong the life of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, while
at the same time ensuring that all the nutrients and
vitamins are preserved too.
Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win... Win...

appliances, we are offering £200 worth of Tesco vouchers to the winner

THE ORIGINAL AND
STILL THE BEST!
REVISITING CIRCOTHERM® WITH SENIOR
HOME ECONOMIST LYNN WILLIAMS AND
TRAINING MANAGER, LIZ BAKER
After over 37 years in the UK, CircoTherm®
cooking remains the original and still the best fan
oven system around. It has been much imitated
by other manufacturers (we are of course
flattered by this!), but never equalled.
The principle of CircoTherm® remains the same today as
when it was first introduced in 1973. Air is drawn in by a
powerful fan; it is then heated up and forced back in to the
oven through strategically placed ducts in the rear wall. As
a result, the oven heats up rapidly and needs little or no
pre-heating before cooking, which saves more time. There
is no intermingling of flavours, foods cook across the whole
of the shelf level, there is rapid sealing of food and less
shrinkage on joints.
HERE’S HOW TO GIVE YOUR CUSTOMERS
A DEMONSTRATION
In our opinion, the best way to explain the principle of
CircoTherm® is by demonstration. That’s why we take a
hands on approach to our Training Courses and why our
Home Economists travel the length and breadth of the
country every week showing customers all the advantages
of this Neff flagship.
You can also do a demonstration for customers in your
showroom any day of the week, simply by following the
simple instructions below.
Whether you have a working oven or not, it’s really easy to
illustrate the CircoTherm® principle and show how the fan
works.
If you have an oven that is fully operational:
• Remove the shelves
• Turn the oven to defrost
• Take a piece of A4 paper or medium card and put onto
the back plate – the fan will hold it in place
5
If you have an oven that has the element disconnected:
• Remove the shelves
• Turn the oven to CircoTherm® 160°C
• Take a piece of A4 paper or medium card and put onto
the back plate – the fan will hold it in place
All this means that you can open the door without getting
a face full of hot air and better still, the oven temperature
doesn’t drop too much when the door is open – perfect for
those delicate soufflés!
In fact, so successful is this innovative cooking system that
you can confidently put a meringue and a salmon together
in the same oven to cook at the same time, with no
intermingling of flavours.
CircoTherm® has an excellent reputation for the quality of
cooking that it produces. Although it is an electric based
system, the results are more familiar to gas users. Why?
Because gas is a very moist cooking system, ideal for creating
excellent results for roasts, Yorkshire puddings and the like.
RETAINING MOISTURE IS A KEY BENEFIT
In addition, unlike other fan ovens, Neff’s CircoTherm®
system keeps much of the moisture produced by cooking
inside the oven cavity.
From our experience, customers of all ages and culinary
abilities are always extremely pleased by the results
achieved in their oven. That’s why they stay with Neff time
and time again, even when they change their kitchen or
move house.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SELL
CIRCOTHERM® TO YOUR CUSTOMER?
This demonstrates how the air is pulled to the back of the
oven by the powerful fan which then forces the air back
inside the oven, wrapping the food on each shelf level in its
own pocket of air. This is very different to many ovens on
the market which work by pushing air into the cavity and
basically cooking by ‘throwing’ the air at the food.
Simple! Have a fully working kitchen to hold Neff Events and
demonstrate cooking with our appliances. If you have one of
our partner cookery schools near you (Brook Hall, Winslow,
Buckinghamshire; The Cooking School at Dean Clough,
Halifax; the Foodworks, Cheltenham; Newlyns, Hampshire)
you could also encourage your customers to attend an event
either there or at one of the Tesco Assessment Centres in
Camberley, Perth, Sandhurst, Stockport or Shoreham.
THE BRILLIANT BENEFITS OF CIRCOTHERM®
Because CircoTherm® operates at lower temperatures,
typically 160°C (20°C lower than conventional ovens) there
is less spitting and soiling reducing the amount of cleaning
required. Each shelf level, enveloped in its own pocket of air,
is in effect a ‘mini oven’ on its own, so fats and juices are not
distributed around the oven, the door does not get covered
in fat and hot air skims the front of the oven as it passes
over the food.
WHAT NEXT
To book a Neff Event, increase your product
knowledge or introduce a new colleague to the Neff
CircoTherm® system, your Neff Area Business Manager
would be happy to discuss forthcoming dates with you.
LYNN AND LIZ REMIND US OF THE BENEFITS OF CIRCOTHERM®
• CircoTherm® is still the benchmark for all fan ovens
• Unique system of forced air cooking
• Little or no pre-heating required
• Multi-level shelf cooking on shelves 1, 3 & 4
• No intermingling of flavours
• Cooking at lower temperatures means less spitting and soiling
• Good for roasts because of the way and speed that heat is
delivered producing less shrinkage and moist, succulent joints

RED IS THE COLOUR
FOCUS ON ACCREDITED APPLIANCE RETAILER,
BUILT IN KITCHEN APPLIANCES
7
Steve Woods is a lucky man. He gets to spend
his working day in close proximity to the love of
his life – his local football team! That’s because,
as owner of Built In Kitchen Appliances, Steve’s
Anfield premises are very close to Liverpool
Football Club’s famous ground.
Explains Steve: “We realised that we needed to move into
larger premises when we found ourselves with 17 shops on
the same block. Initially we only offered built in appliances
as planned, but there was a demand for freestanding as well
so now we supply all kitchen equipment – except for the
woodwork!”
Built In Kitchen Appliances (BIKA) has recently been
awarded Neff Accredited Appliance Retailer (AAR) status.
Comments Steve: “We focus on Neff as the market leader
so being a Neff AAR gives us a lot of credibility. We definitely
notice the tangible benefits and kudos that goes with the title,
both in store and online.”
IS THIS THE LARGEST SHOWROOM IN
THE UK?
The company was formed around 20 years ago when Steve
and his wife Susan set up a small electrical appliance shop
specialising in selling built in appliances. “I had the idea to
concentrate on built in,” affirms Steve. “I was convinced, even
then, that this was the way forward.”
Says Steve: “Neff is based on quality, reliability and functionality
so it’s a very good match for BIKA as we work on exactly the
same core principles.”
As Steve had predicted, the business developed and grew so
they bought the shop next door – and then the shop next
door to that, several times over – until they owned a whole
row of shops next door to each other.
BIKA’s new retail Showroom boasts 20,000 square feet and
is the largest in the North West – and probably the UK.
There is a huge area dedicated to the Neff brand, which is
the biggest built in brand they sell.
Steve also cites the quick and efficient back up from Neff
as a major factor in their satisfaction with the brand. “Ian
Adams is a fantastic Area Business Manager,” confirms Steve.
“He works closely with us and always does a great job. Your
customer service back up is also excellent,” he adds.
Although most of the business is supplying new appliances,
the replacement market is also a key area for the Sales
Team at BIKA. Says Steve: “Our Installation Manager provides
a full replacement service for appliances, including integrated
models, and this has now become a very popular service with
our customers.”
TRADE BENEFITS
The size of the showroom in Anfield means that BIKA can
accommodate a wide selection of Neff appliance displays
from all the different Series. This works well for trade
customers – as well as consumers – as they can compare all
the different models on site before buying.
“Architects and designers often bring their customers here to
look at all the options before specifying the exact models,”
Steve tells us. “They tell us it’s so much more effective to see
the full Neff range on display in one place.”
All the Neff appliances on display at BIKA are
decommissioned but wired up so they do light up if
switched on. “Neff is one of the few brands that people
actually ask for by name when they visit”, admits Steve,
adding: “People aspire to Neff because they see it in the glossy
magazines and actively seek it out. The adverts work really well,
especially the one with the SlideAway door oven!”
BIKA advertises in the North West regional press with
regular monthly promotions. “We have promotional
events that we advertise specifically to bring people in to the
Showroom. These are usually held on weekends as we open
7 days a week.”
FROM SHOWGIRLS TO SHOWROOM
One of the other great benefi ts of the new Anfield premises
is the expanded parking facilities. “This is a great position on a
main road out of Liverpool city centre,” reveals Steve. “There is
plenty of car parking, which is very important for our customers.
It actually used to be a well known nightclub!” he adds.
There are 24 members of staff at BIKA, most of whom have
been with the company for 10 years or more. Nowadays,
working mum Susan concentrates on the administration
and personnel side of the business, while raising the couple’s
two young children, Rebecca and Sam. John Ball is BIKA’s
General Manager who holds the fort when the Woods are
on holiday or perhaps next door watching ‘The Reds’ in
their match of the day.

WALES...
FAMOUS FOR RUGBY AND SIGMA 3
After 35 years in the industry, Sigma 3 is now
the largest fitted kitchen supplier, retailer and
manufacturer in Wales. To coincide with the
opening of an impressive new 5,500 sq. ft retail
showroom in Swansea, NEFF NEWS spoke to
Sigma 3 Chairman and Chief Executive Brian
Lakin about building up this multi-faceted business
and his challenges for the future.
Where does the Sigma 3 name come from?
Sigma is a mathematical sign for accuracy and is used to
denote a very precise, well constructed product range. When
we started, we had just 3 product ranges, so that’s where the
number came from.
What is your background?
After leaving school at 16, I took my mother’s advice and learnt
a trade. She said I would never be out of work if I used my
hands! I did a year’s apprenticeship with local cabinet makers
then spent a year on building sites learning general carpentry
before starting my own business when I was only 18. I always
wanted to be my own boss so it was the logical next step at
the time.
9
How did you get into kitchens?
Kitchens have been a huge part of my life. When I started Brian
Lakin Cabinet Makers in 1975, I did a lot of work for family and
friends in the area. That’s how I built up my business initially as
there was a big demand for kitchens.
When did the fledgling business become Sigma 3?
My wife Elizabeth and I started with a small workshop and
showroom in Barry (of ‘Gavin & Stacey’ fame!), where I was
born and brought up. When we outgrew this, we moved the
business to Cardiff, which is only about 6 miles away. We also
established a retail Showroom in Swansea soon after that.
Is that the Showroom you have just re-launched
this summer?
We’ve actually had three Showrooms in Swansea over the
years. The first was set up in 1982, then we moved to a new
location and after 25 years there, we have just moved again.
We have made a huge investment in the new Showroom with
18 kitchen displays, as well as bedrooms and home offices. It
took just 8 weeks of very intensive team work from shell to
fulfilment. I am very proud of the achievement and looking
forward to showing it off to our customers.
What special features does the new Swansea
Showroom have?
Besides the 18 fabulous new displays? The Showroom is open
plan with air conditioning so it’s a great environment to visit, as
well as a great place to work. Parking facilities are excellent too.
Does the Showroom have a working kitchen?
4 of the 18 kitchens on display are working kitchens with Neff
appliances. We are fully committed to interactive displays where
products like hobs and hoods can be experienced. All the Neff
appliances are wired up as we know how important it is for
customers to get a feel of them before they make a decision.
Do your other Showrooms also have working kitchens?
All the showrooms have at least one working kitchen for the
same reason.
How many Showrooms do you have?
In total, we now have 12 Showrooms. Five are branded as
Sigma 3 and the rest go under the name of County Kitchens.
But retail is only a third of the story. Our Commercial Division
is set up to supply the building market and we are a major
manufacturer of kitchen furniture to Independent Kitchen
Studios around the country as well.
Where do you manufacture your kitchens?
We have invested in a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art
manufacturing plant in Llantrisant in Mid Glamorgan, which is
North West of Cardiff. This is also our company Head Office
where all the Directors are based.
How many directors do you have?
Including myself as Chairman and my wife Elizabeth as a NonExecutive Director, we are a team of 6 Directors. Pat Thomas
is Retail Director, Richard Partridge is Commercial Director,
Gerald Jones is Manufacturing Director and Clive Stockdale is
Financial Director. Each one takes responsibility for a section of
the business, overseen by myself. .
Are all your Showrooms in Wales?
Only four of our retail Showrooms are in Wales – two in
Cardiff, one in Swansea and one in Newport. Plus we have a
brand new trade Showroom at the factory in Llantrisant called
‘Sigma Showcase’, which has been very well received.
Where are your other Showrooms?
We have a fifth Sigma 3 Showroom in Warton, near Preston in
Lancashire to cater for the North West of England. Our other
retail brand, County Kitchens covers Surrey, Sussex and the
surrounding areas after we acquired seven more Showrooms
between 2002 and 2005.
“
Our turnover was
£20 million last year…
Brian Lakin
”
CONTINUED 10
Do you supply other retailers as well as your own?
We have over 50 trade customers around the UK with whom
we have a very strong relationship. Jason Williams is our
National Sales Manager responsible for all our trade accounts
as this is a very important part of the business.
Has your business been affected by the recession?
Fortunately we have always pursued a strategy of diversified
outlets. This helps to weather the storm when times are
hard, as they have been during the recession. Retail has been
hit hard but not as badly as the building market. The various
different elements of the business have been complementary;
our turnover was £20 million last year so we have done better
than most.
How many people do you employ?
We employ 170 people full time across the business and
another 50 are self-employed as fitters and plumbers etc.
Two of my sons are in the business too. Edward works in
manufacturing and Richard is on the retail side. We recruit a
lot of young people and train them up from scratch. We also
believe in promoting from within as this has proven to be a
successful formula.
What sort of furniture do you offer?
We have over 150 door finishes to choose from in all styles
from classic to contemporary with every door finish you can
think of including foils, vinyls, painted and glass. In essence, we
have 2 ranges: Evolution and Masterclass to cater for kitchens
of all budgets from £2,500 to £25,000.
What’s the difference between the two ranges?
Evolution is our ‘value’ offer with around 35 door styles in
5 price groups. Masterclass is a bespoke collection with
over 130 doors in 9 price groups. It offers an excellent
choice of finishes and in my opinion surpasses many foreign
furniture brands.
How long have you been selling Neff?
Neff has been our major appliance brand for nearly 30 years.
The principles of the two companies are a very good fit.
Neff believes in the importance of Showrooms offering good
product knowledge, as well as excellent customer service.
Our core beliefs are exactly the same and we fully support
the Neff trading policy.
11
Pat Thomas, (MD, Retail) with Brian Lakin (Chairman and Chief Executive)
Do customers ask for Neff or do you have to suggest it?
Neff has the best brand awareness of all the appliance brands.
Our designers all favour Neff because of the support we
get from the sales and service side. Our Neff Area Business
Manager, Ray Foley comes here to do training sessions for our
staff and Neff ’s customer service in the UK is great. We have
seen significant improvements to the service side over the
last 10 years.
Has your MasterPartner® status made a difference?
We really like and support the MasterPartner® initiative.
For us, the most crucial thing is that the staff know the
product well and have faith in it. That’s why all our
Showrooms have working kitchens and also why we
encourage our staff to do their own demonstrations, with
products like the Neff induction hob.
What sets you apart from your competitors on the
retail side?
The kitchen business is complex and customer service is
paramount. It requires committed staff and extensive training
to meet customers’ demanding criteria these days. We aim to
provide our customers with a first class service package.
What sort of training do you offer?
We run comprehensive training programmes which include
health and safety regulations, as well as product knowledge
for all areas of the business, from appliances and worktops to
furniture and sinks. It’s a very broad range.
How do you advertise the business?
The internet plays a key role in the business now as people
tend to do their homework before visiting a showroom. Our
website is crucial so we have to express our credentials to
set us apart. We use the full marketing mix to promote the
business, including TV and radio but also traditional press,
lifestyle magazines and billboards. We’ve even tried some more
unusual methods, like Adbikes! And of course word of mouth is
a priceless form of advertising for us.
Do you get many recommendations?
We aim to keep our customers for life. By that, I mean that we
are more than happy for them to buy a rigid Evolution kitchen
for their first home, in the hope that they will come back when
they move house and replace it with a bespoke Masterclass
kitchen! Recommendation is a big part of our success and
reinforces the fact that we deliver the whole package time and
time again.
Do you do anything in return for recommendations?
We offer incentive vouchers to customers who recommend
us to their family and friends because customer loyalty is
really important to us. As I said before, we aim to keep our
customers for life and we value their custom.
Do you have a limit to how far you will travel to plan a kitchen?
Normally, we operate within a 15-20 mile radius of each
Showroom but obviously we will travel further afield if our
customers ask us to. Often we start with a kitchen then go
back for the bedroom and home office. Or vice versa. We
don’t manufacture the bedroom or home office furniture any
more, only the kitchens.
What are your plans for the future? More growth?
Our first priority is to invest in all our current Showrooms
to enhance their value, just as we have done at the new
Showroom in Swansea. Then, depending on the market
conditions, we will be focused on growing our trade division by
working with more Independent Studios and building on that
customer base.
Are you looking for more trade partners?
We are always looking for more trade outlets so if any Neff
dealers out there reading this article would like to talk to us
about supplying furniture, ask them to get in touch with either
Jason or myself at the factory in Wales!

DESIGNER
DOMINIQUE
TRIUMPHS AT
KBB AWARDS
At the 16th Annual KBB Awards held in Birmingham in March,
kitchen designer Dominique McLaughlin (top right) triumphed
over hundreds of designers across the UK to pick up the
prestigious UK Designer Award for Kitchens.
Dominique co-directs James James Kitchens in the Wirral,
alongside her mother Vanessa Sharp. After joining the company
only 6 years ago, she has never looked back.
Recalls Dominique: “After graduating from university I was
working in PR and Marketing in Newcastle. When a design
position arose at James James, I jumped at the chance. It was the
perfect opportunity to make my passion for design a career, as
well as embark on an exciting new challenge with my mum.”
According to KBB Review editor and Judge, Andrew Davies,
Dominique’s design really stood out. As he told Neff News:
“Dominique provided great design in a difficult space with
impressive project management and real value for money. This is
exactly what the KBB Awards are all about.”
“
This is exactly what the
KBB Awards are all about
Andrew Davies, KBB Review
”
ONWARD & UPWARD
Neff appliances feature heavily in Dominique’s winning entry
in the KBB Awards. Says Dominique: “We have a longstanding
partnership with Neff as Vanessa, my Mum has been selling
the product for over 20 years. The beauty of Neff is its
comprehensive and flexible product range. It allows us to cater
for the kitchen of a top chef or of a novice home cook and meet
both their expectations perfectly. We are fully supported by our
Area Business Manager, Ian Adams, so we are always trained in
the capabilities of the product and can pass this knowledge and
experience onto our clients confidently.”
The stunning showroom at James James has a demonstration
kitchen equipped with a live Neff induction hob, which has
been a key tool in helping clients trial the innovative cooking
method. “We all have induction hobs at home”, explains
Dominque. “In our opinion, it’s the best way of understanding a
new technology.”
Dominique’s winning kitchen design (ALAMS)
Continues Dominique: “Rather than just working together, we
went one step further by buying the business and undertaking a
major project of renovation within our Showroom.”

For the last 6 years, Dominique and Vanessa have successfully
run the Showroom with a team of seven, including long serving
installation experts. They offer a comprehensive package
including an exclusive design service, installation and building
work for clients across Wirral, Cheshire, Liverpool and beyond.
Dominique decided to enter the KBB Awards as a personal
challenge and a way of benchmarking her design work against
other industry experts.
James James is open five days a week but with a hectic
workload, both Vanessa and Dominique also work out of
hours by appointment. “Quite often, I find myself coming in on
my day off to do design work” admits Dominique. “It’s what I
love doing, so sometimes it’s really hard to switch off!”

LYNDEN CONTEMPORARY LIVING SPACES
CELEBRATES 25 YEARS AND AN
EXPANDING BUSINESS
“A compact set up” is how Christine Prest
describes the tightly run business that she and her
husband Colin own and manage in York. In fact,
the Prests make up one half of the whole Front
of House Team, which also includes Installation
Manager Tony and Office Manageress Elaine.
2010 is a big year for Lynden as it marks the company’s 25th
Anniversary. To celebrate this important milestone, the Prests
held a Neff Event earlier in the year for customers past,
present and future.
They also took the opportunity of re-branding the company
from Lynden Design to Lynden Contemporary Living Spaces,
to reflect the changing nature of the business more effectively.
Left to right: The Lynden Team – Christine, Elaine, Tony and Colin
Explains Colin: “Our business has changed dramatically over the
years, from pure kitchens to full project management throughout
the home. Although we still specialise in kitchens, we also do
bedrooms and en suites, as well as other rooms in the home.
That’s why we decided it was time for a change of direction.”
The Anniversary Event was the first time that Lynden had
arranged a ‘rolling’ demonstration, where people were
invited to attend throughout the day, anytime between
10am and 4pm.
“We usually do evening events so this one was a bit of an
experiment” admits Colin. “We were delighted that so many
people turned up – at least 90. The Neff Home Economist,
Gill Marczak was excellent and it was a great success with lots
of quotes generated on the day”.

25 Year Anniversary Event
WITH NEFF FOR 25 YEARS
Lynden is a Neff MasterPartner ® Showroom with over 30
appliances currently on display. The Prests have been selling
Neff since day one and pride themselves on their long
standing knowledge of the brand.
Confirms Christine: “Neff is our only major appliance brand.
We feel like we have Neff written right through us! Neff provides
a great product range with excellent service and back up, just like
us. That’s why we are still with Neff after 25 years.”
The company’s newly re-designed website proudly announces
Lynden’s association with Neff and its MasterPartner ® status;
it also promotes the regular Neff events that take place
throughout the year.
The business has become more flexible to meet the demands
of the recent recession. “We offer a unique service for a kitchen
studio because we are totally flexible on the size of the job”,
explains Christine. “Being adaptable means there is a steady
flow of work, as it’s a lot tougher out there now and you have to
move with the times to stay on course today.”
IMPROVING RATHER THAN MOVING
Continues Christine: “We like to think that we have developed
the business in line with consumer demand. People improve rather
than move these days and we are well placed to benefit from this
significant home trend.”

COOKERY CLASSES WITH A DIFFERENCE
A recurrent theme throughout Neff’s 37 years
in the UK has been consistent support of
Cookery Schools. Using the ovens in a cookery
school environment on a daily basis is a vital
test of their abilities.
Performance and reliability are essential at all times, as is the
confidence in knowing the finished results will always impress.
Cookery Schools must have the confidence in their appliances
to know that the finished results will always impress, which
is why performance and reliability are essential. That’s the
experience of the UK’s leading Kosher Cookery Expert,
Denise Phillips who has just revamped the kitchen at her
home in Northwood, Middlesex.
The gleaming new white kitchen doubles up as a cookery
school during the week, so has to work effectively both as a
family kitchen and as a teaching environment.
Denise’s first requirement was two of everything: two ovens, two
hobs, two dishwashers and two sinks. This is because an essential
element of keeping kosher is separating out the milk from the
meat foods. The bible prohibits cooking, eating or serving meat
and dairy products together so this has long been the
cornerstone of the religion and is followed as a daily way of life.
As a result, observant Jews organise their kitchens into two
distinctly divided areas, requiring totally separate sets of
appliances for cooking and washing up in order to prevent
any contact between them. Duplicate sets of crockery, cutlery,
utensils, pots and saucepans are also required for these
reasons. In her new kitchen, Denise has created a mirror
image for each with the gas hob as the focal point.
SLIDEAWAY DOOR OVENS OFFER
UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW
15
This is the second time that Denise Phillips has selected Neff
as the cooking appliances of choice for her demonstration
kitchen. This time, after 15 years of running the school, she
particularly wanted to install two of the new top of the range
Series 5 B46E74 SlideAway door ovens as they are ideal for
this purpose.
“
In a demonstration,
you need reliable appliances
that work quickly.
Denise Philips
”
Denise tells us: “Neff ovens heat up really fast and the SlideAway
door means that the participants can see exactly what I am
doing at every stage of the process.”
Continues Denise: “I think people often find it daunting to have
new appliances installed as there is so much to learn. With Neff,
the features are not complicated and these new ovens are really
easy to use – and to clean – so you can get started immediately.
The SlideAway door is a great idea as well!”
THERE’S EVEN A SABBATH SETTING!
Denise also sings the praises of the Sabbath Setting on her
top of the range Neff ovens. Essentially it means that you can
pre-set the oven before the Sabbath starts on a Friday night
and it will stay at a regular heat for up to 23 hours.
During this time, observant Jews are prohibited from initiating
any cooking so Denise is keen to promote this useful facility
to others, explaining: “I have to say that I had this facility on my
old Neff oven and it was so useful that it was another factor in
my decision to buy new ones with the same feature.”
The central island unit doubles up as a table for a
demonstration event. Made of Corian, the island unit can be
extended on each side with the clever use of inserts, enabling
up to 12 people to be seated comfortably at a time. Denise
teaches a variety of different classes for men and for women,
from traditional Jewish cooking for Friday nights and festivals,
to special occasion food, such as pastry and bread baking, plus
Italian, Chinese and even Sushi favourites.
Another string to Denise’s bow is her writing skills. She is a
member of the UK Guild of Food Writers and is considered
as the foremost Jewish cookery writer in the country. In
addition to regular columns in both the Jewish Chronicle and
the London Jewish News, she is also the author of several
very popular cookery books, sold prolifically around the UK, as
well as in Europe and the USA.
Keeping it simple is an essential factor in Denise’s kitchen.
She tries to limit each recipe to 5 key ingredients and offers
a wide range of options, both in her books and in her classes.
Aside from the normal cookery classes which she runs several
times a week throughout the year, Denise has also found a
niche in dedicated evening events called ‘Date on a Plate’ for
single men and women.

MAKING A WORKING
KITCHEN WORK FOR YOU
HOW A FULLY FUNCTIONING KITCHEN DISPLAY WILL HELP
WIN ORDERS
It could be argued that a kitchen showroom
without a working kitchen in it is not really a
‘showroom’.
For a working kitchen to be a success there are three
important ingredients, if you will pardon the pun. The
kitchen layout must be a cross between a ‘real’ kitchen and
a demonstration set; the appliances must be selected with
a view to showing features available across a wide range
of models, and the food that you cook should be easy to
prepare in advance and to cook quickly.
Many of you spend a great deal of money on your showroom
presentation, but if all you can demonstrate is how a
cupboard door opens or how a drawer can store more
packets of pasta than most households can get through in a
year, are you missing a trick?
MAKING ROOM FOR MOD-CONS
The consumer probably knows how furniture functions but
how many really understand the advantages of cooking with
steam, how easy induction hobs are to control, or how quiet
and efficient cooker hoods are?
Your working kitchen needs a plumbed in sink (with hot &
cold water), a refrigerator, working dishwasher, a working hob
and cooker hood. You can add to this, in a single tall column, a
deep pan drawer, followed by a warming drawer, a single oven
and steam combination plus a wall-mounted microwave.
A working kitchen display can serve many functions, including
underlining you as the kitchen expert in your area who
can demonstrate the appliances on display. But it would be
wrong to think of one as a facility only used for the occasional
‘proper’ cookery demonstrations run as a special event.
NOT A LUXURY – A NECCESSITY
Obviously that is one important function of a working kitchen,
and Neff’s demonstrations were covered in some detail in
Issue 7 of Neff News, however there is no reason why the
working kitchen cannot be working for you more informally
on a much more regular basis.
For example late night Fridays or during the day on Saturdays,
providing hot snacks and drinks for visitors to the showroom.
If there is anything that is going to get a prospective client
to linger in a showroom, it’s one of Neff’s famous toasties,
washed down with a freshly brewed cup of coffee of course!
17
Grahame Morrison has been
reporting on European kitchen
trends for over 25 years and
frequently contributes copy
to several UK kitchen business
magazines and consumer
titles. Currently, Grahame is
providing weekly news and
features for the KBB News
website, and reports on UK
kitchen design issues for a
leading German kitchen
business magazine, so he
is very well placed to brief
NEFF NEWS readers on
what’s hot and what’s not.
As far as the layout of a dedicated working kitchen you want
to use for more formal showroom events with a Neff Home
Economist, the current kitchen thinking of a wall of cabinets
fronted by an island that works so well in an open-plan living
space also works very well as a layout for a demonstration
kitchen in a showroom. However, the positioning of the
appliances within that layout is very important if the kitchen is
also going to double up for more formal presentations.
“Consider the audiences viewpoint,” explains Adrian Stoneham
of Stoneham Kitchens who supplied the furniture used in the
original Neff Demonstration Centre at Milton Keynes. “Can
they see what is being demonstrated? A hob or barbecue grill
etc with the presenter standing facing the audience is far more
engaging than a presenter with their back to them. A linear
island type arrangement works very well here with a row of
units and appliance housings on the wall behind this. Also, think
about the appliance positions. An oven/steamer/microwave at
eye level is far easier to demonstrate and for the audience to
see in use than a floor mounted low level model.”
BEWARE OF PRODUCT OVERLOAD!
Given the range of products in the current Neff collection, it
would be very easy to overload the demonstration kitchen
because you want to show everything! While this may be fun,
sadly it isn’t necessary. Your well-appointed Showroom will
have other kitchen room-sets where you can display Neff
appliances to good effect.
“A single oven in tandem with a compact appliance is a
good starting point,” says John McLauchlan, Senior Product
Category Manager for Cooking at Neff. “Neff has steam
combinations, steamers, oven with microwaves, microwave
combinations, straight microwaves and coffee centres in designs
that coordinate with the ovens so it is easy to put a ‘block’
together that will demonstrate all of the main features of the
Neff cooking range.”
“In deciding on which compact appliance to choose, perhaps
we should first consider other options - specifically appliances
designed for installation into wall cupboards.”
“Neff has a selection of microwaves designed for this purpose,
including models with quartz grills. If wall space can be
sacrificed, then a microwave with grill could be a good solution,
meeting the need for speedy microwave cooking and providing
a separate grill. This frees up the space above the oven for
something that does not necessarily have to include a grill or a
microwave”.
“However, a second oven cavity is perhaps still high on the list
of requirements, so the ideal choice could be a compact steam
combination oven, which provides the extra oven capacity (hot
air function), plus the opportunity to demonstrate cooking in a
healthier manner.”
And don’t forget the cooker hood in your working kitchen
design. Not only will this demonstrate how quiet modern
cooker hoods are, it will help to keep your showroom
smelling fresh at the end of the demonstration too.
There are also three essential products every working
kitchen needs that I haven’t mentioned yet. You will need a
working dishwasher - and this may be an ideal opportunity
to demonstrate Neff’s new compact dishwasher in-situ. You
will also need a refrigerator for the food that is going to be
cooked. This cannot be one that is ‘shared’ with the drinks
you are going to serve and it has to be chilled to working
temperature before you put the food in.
And you will need a working sink with hot and cold running
water. This must be either a one-and-a-half or double bowl
sink so that hand washing is kept
separate from food preparation.
What should you cook yourself?
Nothing until one of your team
has a ‘Level 2 Certificate in Food
Safety and Hygiene and Catering’.
The work needed for such a
certificate can be done online;
Google ‘food hygiene certificate’
for a list of companies that set
online courses with certification
or check with your local
Environmental Health Officer.
KISS & TELL
THE WORKING KITCHEN AS A
TRADE-UP TOOL
Once you have this, remember KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid.
Mini muffins or sausage rolls from the local supermarket
reheated in a CircoTherm® oven make great Showroom
Snacks and will help to give the Showroom a welcoming
atmosphere.
As far as hobs are concerned, most people agree the way to
sell induction hobs is to demonstrate one in the showroom
and Neff’s new Flexinduction will certainly grab attention! An
induction hob will also negate having to install a gas supply for
a gas hob and eliminate some of the planning regulations too.
Failing that, the very least you should do is connect up one of
the Neff coffee machines so you can offer your visitor a fresh
brew as they look around your showroom. It can be thirsty
work buying a new kitchen!

THE PROOF OF
THE PUDDING...
...IS DEFINITELY IN THE EATING WHEN
IT COMES TO A NEFF EVENT
Violet Designs of Midhurst, West Sussex held
its very first Neff Event earlier this year. Not an
unusual occurrence for a new kitchen showroom
but owner Lorraine Head had been running the
business for over 10 years at the time!
When her Neff Area Business Manager, Dean Peacock first
suggested an Event, Lorraine could not see how it could
improve an already successful proven sales formula.
Admits Lorraine: “I was very negative about it when Dean first
suggested it, especially when he said it should be held on a
Saturday. I was convinced that no one would turn up!”
The Event was promoted via www.violetdesigns.co.uk and on
the Neff Website and together, these sites brought in enough
visitors to fill the venue.
“Some people came in for more information on their existing Neff
appliances, but we also got lots of tangible enquiries on the day”,
comments Lorraine, adding: “you think you know it all and then
you watch the appliances being demonstrated and realise you can
always learn something new about Neff! And, by demonstrating the
appliances, you get an invaluable opportunity to sell up the Neff
range.”
Final word goes to Neff ’s Dean Peacock. “This is not just about
selling and providing practical information – It’s about bringing the
appliances to life!”

PEOPLE IN
FOCUS
FACE TO FACE WITH
SHARON DODSWORTH
Sharon Dodsworth is one of our nationwide
team of skilled Home Economists putting on a
Neff Event in kitchen specialist showrooms in
the Midlands area.
The job involves demonstrating Neff cooking appliances
and showing off their abilities to potential consumers. By
talking to customers about their individual requirements, the
advantages of the appliance can be visually shown as you go
up through the series and sales can be generated as a result.
Being passionate about cooking is a prerequisite, as is using
the appliances regularly at home. “Cooking is my hobby, as
well as my occupation, so it’s easy to be enthusiastic about the
subject” says Sharon.
“
I like all types of cooking
and am always feeding people,
both at home and at work
Sharon Dodsworth
”
Enthusiasm is another key ingredient of a Neff Home
Economist. “It’s all about cooking with confidence” affirms
Sharon. “I always try to make the cooking accessible and give
people the know-how to try their hand at home.”
Since joining Neff in 1998, Sharon’s passion for the brand has
given her plenty to talk about, often regaling showroom visitors
with anecdotes from her busy home life as a working mum.
“My husband often says that talking is something I don’t struggle
with!” says Sharon, laughing.
Home is in Loughborough where she lives with husband
Geoff and their three children, who are all willing guinea pigs
for Sharon’s love of cooking and experimenting with different
culinary styles. So far only daughter Ellie shares her love of
cooking; both sons prefer to sample the results!
The work also involves regular supermarket shopping as food
is provided for the demonstration events as part of the Neff
package. “You have to be fit for this job!” acknowledges Sharon.
To keep in shape, she spends her spare time attending aerobics
classes and playing netball as Captain of her local team.
For the second year running, Sharon will also taking part in a
charity cycle ride in October, called ‘Pedal it Pink’, for which she
is now training hard.
All Neff Home Economists have to be fully qualified and must
keep up to speed with food hygiene rules and regulations.
This means that they appreciate a fully working demonstration
kitchen when out and about at dealer events.
“The kitchens I work in are so well equipped that it is a pleasure
to use them”, says Sharon. “I love doing the Showroom Events as
I meet lots of current and potential customers. It’s so rewarding,
especially when a customer takes your advice or tells you how
much they have learned from the demonstration.”
Sharon specialises in the famous Neff Toasties – double-sided
savoury treats that work perfectly in a Neff oven. “Toasties are
a great way of demonstrating CircoTherm® because they show how
evenly the bread is browned on both sides”, says Sharon. “I must
have produced over 40,000 of them so during my career. I even
dream about them sometimes!” she admits.
Highlights of her career so far include the Neff Futures Event in
Wales last year and exhibition work.
“
It’s a really great feeling
to put on a live demonstration
Sharon Dodsworth
Sharon taking part in last year’s ‘Pedal it Pink’ charity event
”
“Demonstrations are becoming more and more important for
generating sales, as well as giving people the confidence to cook
with Neff,” concludes Sharon.

POLAND!
Who won?... Who won?... Who won?...
In the last issue of Neff News, we offered two lucky readers the chance to each win a year’s
worth of Quantum Finish Powerball dishwasher tablets to tie in with the launch of Neff’s two
new In-Line dishwashers, models S65M63 and S66M63.
Congratulations go to Georgina Selfe of River Woodwork in London and Steve Harrison of Planahome in Warrington
who were both selected as winners of the competition in Neff News 9. Both correctly answered 96 to the number of
items of crockery that can be accommodated in Neff’s new compact S66M63 In-Line dishwasher. We spoke to both of
them to talk about their win.
Georgina Selfe of River Woodwork in London’s fashionable Putney area has been selling
Neff for around 2 years. “My clients love Neff,” says Georgina. They’re currently looking to
buy their own proprty and will be putting Georgina’s win to good use, as she says:
“As soon as we buy, installing a dishwasher will be top of my wish list!”
Steve Harrison of Planahome in Warrington, Cheshire was
delighted to hear he was a winner as he told us he always
enters the competition in every issue of the magazine. “I read
every issue cover to cover,” said Steve, “but this is the first time
I have won the competition. I was hoping it was a holiday but
dishwasher tablets will always be useful at home and at work!”
added Steve, cheerfully.
Look out for another reader competition on page 4 of this issue of NEFF NEWS .
