Unit of Instruction
Unit of Instruction: Subject: Art Awareness Grade Level: 7th Grade Unit Name: Chiaroscuro the Style of Caravaggio Unit Goals The Art Awareness Program is designed to enhance and enrich the school’s curriculum through the introduction of artists and their significant contributions or techniques. There are a total of 2 artists presented throughout the year. This unit of Instruction will cover the 3 lesson plans to present one of the artists and their most significant contributions to the world of art. ∂
Describe Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s origin and the geographic area where he created and found infamy. ∂
Identify significant works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. ∂

Create two‐dimensional forms. ∂
Define the basic elements of Chiaroscuro; light, illuminated form, form shadow, and cast shadow. ∂
Explain the result of the direction of a light source on form in terms of illuminated form and form shadow. ∂
Illustrate (draw) form shadows using the four basic line forms; circle, cone, cylinder, and cube previously created. ∂
Describe the effect of light on form in relation to cast shadows. ∂
Demonstrate shading effects through cross‐hatching. ∂
Illustrate (draw) cast shadows using the four basic line forms; circle, cone, cylinder, and cube previously created and form shadowed. ∂
Describe and identify the significant influence Caravaggio had on the artistic community then and now. ∂
Explain the use of chiaroscuro in cinematography. 1
Curriculum related Goals The specific goals of this enrichment program as defined in the Art Awareness Mission Statement. And incorporate the knowledge requirements of the State Curriculum Standards for the Arts; ∂
State Goal 25: Know the language of the arts.
∂
State Goal 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are
produced.
∂
State Goal 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are
produced.
Learner Characteristics The learners will be comprised of a single co‐ed seventh grade class, approximately 20 students. The ratio of boys to girls is 2:3. The learners are all of above average intellectual aptitude with no known learning disabilities. The material presented will be appropriate for their cognitive and psychomotor skill levels. There is currently no need for special considerations with regard to physical disabilities. The primary language is English. Learner’s Present Level of Knowledge and Performance The learners are Seventh grade students and the material presented will be appropriate for their cognitive and psychomotor skill levels. The learners possess the appropriate technology skills. Classroom layout and Group Size The learners will be participating within their individual classrooms. The size of each group will be approximately 20. All participants will remain seated at their individual workstations. Each room is equipped with an Elmo TT‐02RX Teachers Tool Document Camera & Viewsonic Pro8100 LCD Projector (or similar model) as well as a Dell Laptop PC with wireless internet access. All project work will be accomplished individually; however conversation, input and interjection will be encouraged. Introductory Procedures Student will be show a brief video presentation on the work of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, to get the learners engaged and excited about the artist. Questions and comments will be solicited regarding the learners perception of the art. Materials used to facilitate the transfer of knowledge will include: ∂
Each student will be provided professional‐quality graphite lead pencils, eraser and a sketch book. 2

An interactive timeline to provide information regarding the influence of Caravaggio’s influence on the artistic community culminating in the use of Chiaroscuro in cinematography. Assessment and Evaluation of Learner Understanding The Art Awareness program is considered and enrichment curriculum and as such participation does not warrant a grade but rather the augmentation of the education of learners. For this 4
reason the assessment and evaluation will be conducted informally consisting of facilitating the learners to draw basic objects from YouTube video tutorial. The facilitator will walk among the learners; address any questions, aid in the creation of the shapes. Supplemental instructional is provided. The facilitator will ensure that each learner has created the basic objects as well as illustrated form shadows. The assessment and evaluation artifacts are as follows: ∂
The learners will answer selected fill in the blank questions located in the Summary of Caravaggio and Chiaroscuro. http://www.bit.ly/SummaryQuestions ∂
The facilitator will have the learners draw as if in Ancient Egypt without the knowledge of chiaroscuro the 4 basic forms; circle, cone, cylinder, and cube. ∂
The facilitator will have the learners return to the four basic line shapes; circle, cone, cylinder, and cube previously created and apply form shadowing using the technique described in the lesson. ∂
The facilitator will provide a worksheet for the learners to practice the shading technique known as cross‐hatching. ∂
The facilitator will have the learners return to the four basic line shapes; circle, cone, cylinder, and cube previously created and apply cast shadowing using the technique described in the lesson. ∂
The facilitator will provide a linear outline for the learners to observe and practice using all the shading technique covered in the lessons, simple, cross‐hatching and gradation of tone through blending to achieve full chiaroscuro. Assessment and Evaluation of Overall Goals Each participant will be asked to fill out and anonymous rubric evaluating the sessions and the facilitator in order to assess the overall effectiveness and success of the Art Awareness Program. https://bitly.com/LearnerRubric 5
