Monday: Today the class watched the movie on creatures of the deep. Some examples are Pompeii worm, Fried egg jellyfish, cuttlefish, and giant sun star. We also did the handout with questions from the movie. After we watched the movie we reviewed the handout. Tuesday: First, homework was collected. Next, we read “Classifying Living Things.” Some examples are Birds, camels (Mammals),Polar bears, and Fish. After we read the article, we started homework that was vocabulary. Wednesday: Today in the beginning of class we took a open note pop quiz. Then after we took the pop quiz we put it in the bin and took the animal adaptations worksheet. After we checked the last page of the adaptation worksheet, we checked the chordata academy homework (vertebrates) from a couple days ago. Thursday: Today at the beginning of class we all checked the animal kingdom vocab worksheet. After we did the vocab, we talked about adaptations about birds. After that, we did a lab activity called Bird Beak Adaptations at our teams . So the basic idea of the game/lab is that you have to pick up all the objects (food) A green golf tee=Grasshopper, a piece of straw=beetle, and a rubber band=worm. You are to pretend that you are a bird and you get a clothespin that's your beak(there are an A clothespin and a B clothespin, and each of them are different. The A clothespins hole is closer to the tip and the B clothespin hole is farther from the tip). You have to pick up all the grasshoppers, beetles and worms. The first time Mrs.Schoepfer timed us for about one minute because it was summer. The second time she timed us for 30 seconds because it was winter. The third time there was a drought so there was no grasshoppers or worms. The fourth time it was the same time and Mrs.Schropfer gave out only B clothespins to two people in each group. Last time it was the same time and Mrs.Schropfer gave everyone B clothespins. Friday: Today we reviewed animal adaptations. We used an adaptation chart to decide if an animal’s adaptation is structural or physical. For example, a we classified a duck with 2 adaptations. First, structurally, a duck has feathers to help them fly. Second, a duck has a beak for getting food (also structural). We also classified a bat, wolf , frog, leopard, lizard, and spider using the same method of adaptations. We also learned how living things use color strategies in nature to protect themselves. Some examples we learned were camouflage, disguise, disruptive coloring, warning coloring, and mimicry. We also went outside to do the worm project and started our homework at the end of class. Summary: In summary, this week we learned about a lot of fun and interesting things about animals. First, we learned about creatures of the deep or creatures that live in water such as the jellyfish and pompei worms. We also learned how to classify living things into categories such as mammals and fish. Next, we learned about animal adaptations and color strategies are used in nature. It has been a fun and interesting week of learning about living things. Summary: This week I learned about creatures of the deep. Some examples are pompeii worms, Fried egg jellyfish, cuttlefish and giant sun star.
