Kohimarama School Tuesday 28th February A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Tena Koutou Katoa Kohimarama School Values underpin the positive, learning culture in the school. Further, they support the relationships of all members of the learning community. Our statement about Respect has been built with students, parents and staff perspectives through our SoLo hexagon process and reads; ‘Respect at Kohimarama School is about everyone valuing people and their ideas through their actions and words. We show this with kindness, by treating others as we would like to be treated. Doing this together, we are enabling Kohimarama School to be a positive learning community.’ Each of us both individually and collectively takes responsibility to ensure it is a living statement that identifies us all as members of the Kohimarama School community. Speaking about our community, I have a personal note of thanks to some of our mums who were in St Heliers on Saturday evening. My wife, Tania, and I had been to the Hidden Figures movie and had stopped for a bite to eat. When we went to settle our bill we found that the Kohimarama mums had paid for a part of our meal. We were so touched by the gesture and thoughtfulness. It reminded me of how great this parent community is at welcoming and how a kind thought demonstrates our Respect value above. The cloak-bay for Kiri team has been modified to take all the bags from Rooms 3, 4, 5 and 24. The layout has been adjusted to ensure the bags are in reach for all students. We have also put in a trap door to gain access under the building. This will complete the project for the Kiri upgrade of deck and surrounds. Some of you might have seen the 7 Days programme on TV3 on Friday evening. ‘My kid can draw’ featured two Kohimarama students from Room 7. Jack and Sophia (6 years old, Cowley team) represented Kohimarama School and did us proud. The TV3 producer was delighted, as were the cast on the night. Here is the comment from Jody Watson, Producer; Please thank all of the children that took part in the filming and the others for their amazing pictures. They all followed the brief very well - it was hard to choose! Enjoy watching tonight!! & thank you again for being so hospitable. You're going to love the segment! We wish to sincerely thank Penny for her leading contribution with the finance portfolio and wish her all the best for the future. Susan Cotton has stepped down from the role of chair with Simon Tucker taking this position. Susan has done a terrific job over the past few years and we are pleased that she has agreed to be the deputy chair for this year. Thanks to Susan for what she has achieved, and thanks also to Simon for putting his hand up for the role. We also welcome Ashleigh Milne to the Board as the teachers’ representative and thank her for the contributions she has already made to the school. With regard to the process of appointing a permanent Principal we thank all the parents, teachers and senior school pupils who took part in the formal consultation phase, and appreciate the feedback. Last night we took all of your comments into account and are progressing with the advertising which is due to appear in the Education Gazette on Monday 13 March. We will provide the school community a link to the advertising when it goes live, so you can see how your feedback has been incorporated in our search for the new Principal. ICAS forms the largest independent assessment programme for schools in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, India and the Pacific region. The subjects on offer this year are Science, Mathematics, English, and Writing. All participating pupils receive a certificate and an analysis of each assessment they sit, highlighting their strengths and growth areas. Letters have gone home to all Year 4-8 pupils and entries are due back to school no later than Friday 17th March. For any questions regarding ICAS please contact Hilary Walkinshaw: [email protected] Roll Return 2017 Twice a year, in March and July, all schools in New Zealand are required to furnish to the Ministry of Education a return detailing all students enrolled at their schools. This return determines our funding and staffing for the remainder of the school year. If your child is going to be absent or late for any reason on Wednesday 1st March the office will require a letter or email from a parent/guardian justifying the student’s absence from school. This correspondence is to be provided to the school office, at [email protected], no later than Friday 3rd March by 2pm. Thank you in advance.
