The Principal’s Message..........
Dear Grenadier Parents: I am proud to greet you from the home of the recently named Illinois Teacher of the Year, Ricky Castro! We have had a great first quarter here at Elk Grove High School, and it’s a pleasure to write to you once more about some of the great things that have been happening here! 1. EGHS was recently featured on ABC 7 Chicago’s “Friday Flyover.” Hundreds of our students and several parents joined us for a morning of fun and activities that were featured live on the ABC-‐7 Morning News. 2. Elk Grove High School once hosted the “Made in Elk Grove” Expo, where our NATIONAL CHAMPION Automated Manufacturing Team was recognized. 3. Our Girls Tennis Team qualified FOUR players for the IHSA State Meet. Lauren Oda and Ashley Szull qualified as a Doubles Team, while Jovana and Jelena Vujanic each qualified as Singles players. Jelena Vujanic finished in the Top 8 in the entire state of Illinois, the highest finish in EGHS history! 4. Dozens of students put together and beautifully performed “The Diary of Anne Frank” in the EGHS Theater. 5. Seven of our students were named “National Merit Commended Scholars,” and senior Emily Stegmeier was named a “National Merit Semi-‐Finalist”! Coming soon, EGHS will once again host our truly memorable and dignified Veterans Day assembly under the direction of Miss Stephanie Kezios. Additionally, our talented performers will work under director Joe Wolfe to create and share the show “Suessical” with the community. Finally, Winter Sports will be starting very soon, and we are eager to see another group of Grenadiers get connected with EGHS! #WeAreEG Many thanks to all of you who participate in our Parent Groups (Grenadier Athletic Boosters, Elk Grove Instrumental Music Association, Choral Boosters, Orchestra Boosters, and Parent-‐Teacher Council). We invite you to join us on the first Tuesday of each month for our “Parent Nation.” More information is available at http://eghs.d214.org. Please join us in support of our students and programs. To the parents of the Classes of 2019 and 2020, please don’t forget to take advantage of the “Harper Promise” program, a 2-‐year full scholarship opportunity for EVERY Elk Grove High School graduate in 2019 who meets certain criteria. Please be sure to help your students attain the attendance, community service, and academic success components of the program. Finally, we would once again love to see you at this year’s PTC Craft Show on Sunday, November 6, from 10-4. It is one of the largest craft shows in the area, and the PTC’s fundraising efforts go right back to our students! See you there! All the best to you and your families. We look forward to seeing you soon at our Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 9th (if not sooner)!! Sincerely, Paul Kelly Principal EGHS Parent Newsletter

2nd Quarter - November 2016
Dear Parent(s),
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, 2016, from 5 - 9 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers for ten-minute conferences. If your
child has a D or an F in a class, you will receive a conference invitation in a separate mailing
with special scheduling directions.
As in years past, you will be making your appointments online. The online appointment portal
will open at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 24, 2016 through 11:59 p.m. on November 2,
2016. You may access the online scheduling system at any time of the day or night within this
registration window.
We suggest that you identify 2-4 classes that you consider priority conferences and schedule
those, though you may make appointments with as many or as few teachers as you wish. Keep
in mind that in some instances, ten-minute conferences are not adequate. If you find yourself in
that situation, or if the teacher’s schedule is full, you may make an appointment with the teacher
for a follow-up conference. You may also email or contact a staff member at any time.
The instructions for online scheduling are included. You will need the following information to
schedule your child’s individual conferences:
Student’s ID#
Date of birth:
Primary phone number:
If you have any questions related to Parent Teacher Conferences, please feel free to reach out
directly to 847-718-4413. For Spanish related questions please call 847-718-4778.
Best Regards,
Megan Knight

EATING DISORDERS Have you ever been on a diet? If your answer is yes, you are one of the vast majority of Americans who tries to change their weight through lowering their caloric intake. (If your diet failed you, you are in the majority again: 95% of diets fail). When health is at risk due to severe excess weight, a change can be prudent. However, most dieters are trying only to change their looks—because they don’t measure up to people that the media uses to represent “ideal” body size. When your diet fails, do you feel bad about yourself? Most of us do, because we believe the advertising myths that: 1) Everyone should look like the “ideal,” and 2) if we only try hard enough, we can look like the ideal. Reality, however, is that diversity is healthy and genetics determine our body size. Belief in the advertising myths can be dangerous for our children, whose self-‐esteem is still developing and who are trying to “fit in.” As parents, we can help our kids feel good about themselves by accepting them unconditionally and by focusing on their inner qualities instead of their outward appearance. Our own more realistic attitudes can help to prevent low self-‐
esteem, dangerous dieting habits, and eating disorders. The presence of an unrealistic beauty ideal, coupled with a $40 billion diet industry, does not in itself cause eating disorders; but it does provide fertile ground in which they can grow and flourish. Because some eating disorder symptoms (such as weight obsession and erratic dieting) are actually seen as “normal” behavior in our culture, it becomes very difficult to recover from eating disorders once they have taken hold. (A recent statistic claims only one-‐third of patients fully recover.) In the United States it is estimated that 5 – 10 million girls and women and 1 million boys and men are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder or borderline conditions. (Shissak et.al. 1995) For these reasons it is important that we, as parents, are aware of the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and also of what we can do to help prevent them in our children. (Eighty-‐six percent of eating disorder patients report onset by the age of 20.) Anorexia nervosa is characterized by the refusal to maintain a normal body weight; bulimia involves a recurring cycle of binge eating and purging. Extremes in exercise, weight changes, fear of food or fat, obsession with thinness, and the amount of food eaten or not eaten can be signals that a problem is developing. Keep the lines of communication open with your teen. If you are concerned, let them know in a gentle and supportive manner. Know the school or community resources you can turn to for help. Early identification affords a greater chance of recovery. For more information on eating problems or disorders, contact the following: 1.

The first dose shall have been received on or after the 11th birthday, and the second dose shall have been received on or after the 16th birthday, at least eight weeks after the first dose. If the first dose is administered when the child is 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required. What does this mean to you and your student? Your student may have already received the required dose/doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine but it has not been specified on their immunization form. Please ask your doctor if your student has received the meningococcal conjugate vaccine and have them provide the dates they were given and a doctor’s signature. If they have not received both doses before age 16 or one dose after age 16, you are required to get this vaccination for your child. Your child will be subject to exclusion in the fall of senior year as described in the school code of Illinois. Please complete as soon as possible as the clinics run out of the vaccine in the summer. Emergency Contact Information In the unfortunate event that an emergency or crisis situation occurs in our area during the school day, we want you to know that Elk Grove High School is prepared. With the help of the Elk Grove Fire and Police Departments, we have designed a Standardized School Crisis Plan that will assist us in effectively responding to these types of situations. While your natural instinct as a parent in an emergency is to go to your child’s school to safeguard him/her, please understand that doing so may significantly impede our response capabilities as well as those of our local emergency responders. It is vital that school officials and the Police and Fire Departments have access to our buildings to manage the situation and give care to students. In addition, it may be necessary to evacuate students to another location if there is immediate danger. In an emergency or crisis situation, we need your cooperation and assistance and ask that you please follow the guidelines below: 


In the event of a crisis that requires an evacuation/relocation of students, contact 847-‐ 718-‐7605 for information. In all other emergency situations, contact 847-‐ 718-‐4400. Tune to major local television and radio stations for information on the situation and instructions on how to reunite with your child. In some emergency or crisis situations, it may be necessary to relocate to another facility for safety reasons. Your designated reunification site is Forest View Educational Center located at 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights. When you travel to the reunification site, please be sure to bring picture identification. We will only release students to their legal guardians, or the authorized individuals as listed on your child’s emergency forms. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Our ultimate goal is to keep your children safe while they are under our care. Elk Grove High School Emergency Contact Information Wallet Card •

Redefining Ready! Highlighted During National College And Career Readiness Month As part of National College and Career Readiness Month in October, District 214 held several conversations to engage stakeholders on our national initiative to change the dialogue on what makes students ready to succeed after they leave our schools. Redefining Ready!, a multimetric approach to defining college and career readiness, was developed by District 214 in partnership with AASA, The School Superintendents Association. Readiness indicators include co-‐curricular participation, attendance, completion of Advanced Placement and dual-‐credit courses and community service. The District 214 Board of Education adopted the Redefining Ready! indicators as part of the official District instructional goals this fall. In October, National Louis University became the first higher education institution to sign a Redefining Ready! Statement of Support, with the understanding that America’s schools, including higher education institutions, have a responsibility to ensure students are College, Career and Life ready; standardized test scores fail to portray a comprehensive picture of students' potential; and our students, who learn in different ways, should be able to demonstrate readiness in different ways. Throughout October, District 214 staff talked with stakeholders and educators from across our communities and the nation about why students cannot be defined by, or reduced to, a single score on a single test. Staff also participated in a one-‐day Twitter campaign, #214Ready, showing how they prepare students for postsecondary success. To learn more, visit www.redefiningready.org District 214 Education Foundation Raises Funds for Student Success Supporters of the District 214 Education Foundation help raise more than $50,000 at the Foundation’s Golf Open and Reception on Monday, September 12, and District 214 parents contributed more than $14,000 through a parent campaign at registration. The funds will go toward innovation, student success and lifelong learning District-‐wide. In the last year, the Foundation has funded a college bus trip for future first-‐generation students, funded Advanced Placement tests for students who couldn’t afford them, funded family literacy programming and provided scholarships for young entrepreneurs. This fall, the Foundation will launch its annual appeal and District 214 employee campaign, allowing further opportunities to positively impact students’ lives. Gifts to the Education Foundation have the potential to impact our 12,000 District 214 students in a time when 30 percent live in poverty and the future of state funding for public education is uncertain. The Foundation provides funding for success opportunities beyond the limitations of the District’s operating budget, ensuring every learner is positioned for future success. Made In Elk Grove Manufacturing Expo Elk Grove High School - October 10, 2016 The manufacturing program itself has once again seen a lot of action this fall. Students took a trip to the International Manufacturing Technology Show at McCormick Place, where they were exposed to the many new and exciting trends in the manufacturing world. They also participated in Manufacturing Day at Wiegel Tools, a local company that is owned and operated by Elk Grove High School Alumni. Most recently, a number of students attended the Made In Elk Grove Manufacturing Expo here at Elk Grove High School. This event, run by the Village of Elk Grove, allowed students to show off the Advance Manufacturing Lab, interact with various company sponsors and students were honored for their 2015 SkillsUSA National Championship. Also at the Expo, senior, Oscar Chavez, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the Golden Corridor Partnership in recognition of his pursuit of a career in manufacturing. Lastly, Elk Grove’s Manufacturing Pathway was awarded a $10,000 grant from Haas Foundation that will go towards program improvement and educational opportunities. EGHS Parent Newsletter

This 4th of July the Marching Grenadiers were chosen to represent the State of Illinois in the National Independence Parade in Washington D.C. The parent boosters were able to accompany the band as well. The parade was attended by thousands of spectators from all over the country and it was a very exciting time. As you can see, a fun time was had by kids and parents alike! In addition to the parade, the marching band participated in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as sightseeing around the DC area. The start of a new school year also is the start of a new marching season. The EG band and booster parents are hard at work learning the show that will be performed at upcoming football games and competitions.
