“Letter from Julia” will be back in April/May Newsletter

“Seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness…”
Autumn always brings to mind Keats wonderful poem about this
season when indeed we are blessed with so many signs of God’s
bounty. By the time you read this we will have celebrated
Harvest Festival when we give thanks to God for the riches of
this good earth. This year our harvest goods were of two very
different kinds. First of all, we had a collection of tinned and dry
goods and toiletries for the food bank run in St. Albans by the
Vineyard Church. They do an amazing job of helping those in need who live locally and
it is always good to be able to support them. Secondly we had a harvest of a very
different kind as we gathered unwanted tools; everything from garden hoes, forks and
rakes to electric power tools and sewing machines. These are then taken by a charity
called TWAM, Tools with a Mission, whose volunteers collect and refurbish these tools.
They are then despatched then to countries like Zambia, Uganda and Sierra Leone
where these tools help people there to become self-sufficient, giving them a trade and
means of income. When we are blessed with so much it is good to be able to give back
a very little of our riches to help others. It is also at this time of year that the Parochial
Church Council gives away a percentage of our annual income to help assorted
charities at home and abroad. It is always heart-warming to receive the thank you
letters and read of the way in which our gift is used to help and enrich the lives of
others both locally and abroad. In the New Year we will let you know exactly which
charities were chosen from among the many who ask for our help.
As we look ahead we have our Annual Memorial Service to remember our loved ones
who have died on November 6th at 4.00pm. All are most welcome to attend this service
of quiet reflection and prayer and as usual there will be an opportunity to light a candle
for those you are personally remembering. There will be tea and cake served before
and after the service and we look forward to welcoming you on that day. The following
Sunday is Remembrance Sunday and we will be holding our annual Parade Service at
the War Memorial at 10. 20am followed by the service in Church at 10.50pm.

Teddy Bears Family Service, Hunt and Picnic
It was wonderful to welcome young and old to the Family
Service on 4th September when teddies were the order of
the day. We were joined by ‘YES’ who sang and played
beautifully, the weather stayed dry enough for everyone to
search the churchyard for a teddy with their name on and we
finished off in St Michael’s Room with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
Patronal Festival
At our Patronal Festival on 11th September it was
delightful to welcome back Rev Sally Davenport and her
husband Rt Rev Chris Foster, Bishop of Portsmouth. Sally
took the service and she and Chris stayed afterwards to
meet old friends and catch up on all the news.
Tools with a Mission
At the Harvest Festival Family Service on 2nd October there was
a collection for TWAM—Tools with a Mission. TWAM’s mission
is to collect unwanted tools, refurbish them, sort them into trade
kits and send them across the world. TWAM sends around 22
containers filled with over 300 tonnes of tools every year. Geoff
Mills has been delighted with the response in the past and looks
forward to a good response in October. If you have any tools
that you no longer require then please contact Geoff on 01707
657997 A list of tools can be found on St Mary’s website or
picked up from the Church.
Bishop’s Hatfield Team Ministry News
On 27th September the Rev Darren Collins was installed as Rector
of St Etheldreda’s and St Luke’s Church and Team Rector of
Bishop’s Hatfield at a service held at St Etheldreda’s. We wish
Darren and his family every blessing as they settle in to their new
surroundings and we look forward to welcoming them to St Mary’s
Don’t miss out on the next SING on 16th October at 3.00pm
in St Michael’s Room
On 16th October St Mary’s will hold its third Community
Singing event. It is proving to be a great success with regulars being
joined by those who have seen the advert as they visited the church
or are walkers passing by. Following what is sure to be some
excellent singing everyone will be treated to tea and cake.
Art Workshop
The next workshops will be held on Mondays October 24th and
31st and November 7th and 14th – 2.00-4.00pm or 7.00-9.30pm.
In St Michael’s Room. If you are interested please contact Robin

Annual Memorial Service offers the opportunity to
remember loved ones particularly those who have died recently.
This year the service will be held at St Mary’s on Sunday 6th
November starting at 4.00pm. It is a quiet service of hymns,
readings and prayers during which the names will be read out
and candles lit in memory of those who have died. A book will
be opened in the church in October for anyone to enter the
names of people they wish to be remembered. Tea and cakes
served in St Michael’s Room before and after the service.
