The Freeman Library is likely Missouri’s only
jazz-centric collection that allows the entire
community to take advantage of housed
content. As such, the library takes quite a bit
of upkeep – everything from re-filing titles, to
entering new data, to purchasing software, to
keeping track of membership cards, to purchasing acquisitions, etc. With membership
support however, the Lending Library, still in
its beginning stages, is guaranteed to thrive.
While anyone can come in and listen to selections on site, and we’re happy to entertain
such patrons, becoming a member is a great
way to support the Jazz Series. Both Annual
Public and Student Memberships are available. And, in honor of the 20th Anniversary
Season, and thanks to a gift from Premonition
Records, this season we are pleased to offer
a Special New Member Premium: become a
member at the $150 level and recieve a copy
of The Best of Von Freeman, a 2-CD/DVD set
offered in honor of the project’s namesake.
With a start-up collection of recordings and books that
exceeds 7,000 titles, the “We Always Swing”® Jazz
Series launched the “Lending Library” on July 1, 2013.
A year later, in keeping with our 20th Anniversary Celebration and Retrospective, we are pleased to dedicate
The Earle LeVon “Vonskis” Freeman Memorial Library,
in memory of the great Chicago tenor saxophonist
(b. 10/3/23 – d. 8/12/12) who willingly and happily
shared his knowledge and experience during his seven decade-long career. “Vonskis” stands tall among
the most influential post-World War Two saxophonists.
HOW IT WORKS
The Freeman Library is constantly growing. Recordings span everything from jazz’s beginnings right up
to the music’s most recent modern sounds. The collection is now a community resource. We encourage
people to visit the Jazz Series and either listen to selections and/or peruse literature on site. We encourage people to become Jazz Series “Members” as well,
which allows them to borrow titles on a weekly basis.

Thanks in part to the University of Missouri’s
Library Science master’s program, the library
will eventually be completely catalogued.
Within the next year, the entire collection will
be organized not simply alphabetically by
artist or ensemble, but also by recording title, inclusion of every musician on every cut,
release date, composer, arranger, etc., thus
making it far easier for people to locate what
they are looking for. During the next year,
software will be in place that allows members, via a secure username and password,
to visit the Lending Library catalog online;
people will know what’s in the collection
before they visit the Jazz Series.
