North America 2015 Largest Staffing Firms in the United States July 9, 2015 Timothy Landhuis, Research Manager [email protected] Confidential Report – NOT for Distribution | ©2015 by Crain Communications Inc. All rights reserved. 2015 Largest Staffing Firms in the United States | July 9, 2015 2015 Largest Staffing Firms in the United States Key Findings: • We estimate that 122 firms generated at least $100 million in U.S. staffing revenue in 2014. Added together, these firms generated $69.4 billion in U.S. staffing revenue in 2014, representing 55.9% of the market, according to our estimates. The complete list of 122 firms can be found starting on page five of this report. • Please note that in this year’s report our revenue estimates reflect “staffing revenue” defined as revenue related to temporary staffing, direct hire, retained search, and temp-to-hire conversion fees. In last year’s report, we also included revenue related to “talent engagement”, which included MSP, RPO, PEO, and online staffing. We have limited our revenue estimates to cover “staffing revenue” to allow for greater consistency and comparability of figures across firms in this report. As a result of this change, revenue figures in this report are not strictly comparable with figures in last year’s report. • We have ranked companies by revenue, according to industry custom, but this ranking should not be taken to imply that a firm with a higher rank provides better service or more value to its shareholders. • Staffing firms varied in degree of financial transparency, and even when forthcoming with information, in some cases data provided was adjusted for the sake of consistency. Therefore, for all firms on this list, the revenue reported is estimated by Staffing Industry Analysts. • Overall, we believe that this list is accurate and can be used appropriately to get a “big picture” reading of the U.S. staffing industry landscape. However, as we are constantly improving our methodology, and because we have narrowed our revenue estimates to reflect “staffing revenue” as explained above, this year’s estimates are not comparable to those of previous years. For that reason, we also did not display prior year revenue estimates in this report. This represents the 20th annual report on the largest U.S. staffing firms produced by Staffing Industry Analysts. All of the companies listed were invited to provide their revenue numbers via online survey in February/March 2015. For firms that did not participate in the survey, revenue estimates were based on company reports, company websites and other sources. Our lists are of strong interest to staffing buyers and we hope those listed will benefit from the increased buyer awareness. Firms not on this list that feel they should have been included are encouraged to contact Staffing Industry Analysts, as we will be releasing a follow‐up briefing for any late additions. Many thanks to the staffing firms who offered their encouragement and assistance in this year's report process. PROPRIETARY DATA, DO NOT DISTRIBUTE OUTSIDE YOUR ORGANIZATION. Franchise revenue was accounted for on a gross basis (full revenue of franchises as opposed to franchise fees.) Our revenue estimates for each staffing firm include the full-year revenue (“pro forma revenue”) of any acquired staffing firms for acquisitions completed during 2014, in order to provide a better proxy for annual revenue size and market share moving forward. • We define “staffing revenue” as revenue generated from the provision of temporary workers to business clients, as well as “place & search” revenue from direct hire/ permanent placement, retained search, and “temp-to-hire” conversions fees. • The list also provides our estimate of each company’s market share of the U.S. staffing industry. Market share was calculated by dividing a company’s listed revenue by our 2014 industry estimate of $124.1 billion that we published in our U.S. Staffing Industry Forecast – April 2015 Update report. • Our estimate of the two segments in which a company generated the most revenue are also provided. For companies that reported all of their revenue in only one segment, we only listed that one. • The scope of this list is different from last year’s list of largest U.S. staffing firms in that our revenue estimates reflect “staffing revenue” while last year’s revenue estimates reflected “staffing and talent engagement revenue.” As a result of the differences in scope, revenue estimates in this year’s report are not comparable with last year’s estimates. As an example, revenue estimates in this year’s report may be lower than revenue figures in last year’s list because talent engagement revenue is not included, even while staffing revenue may have increased in 2014 versus 2013. Noteworthy items excluded: • Any business in which a company/contingent worker is paid a flat fee to complete a project, and the fee is not based on hours or days worked or number of workers. In other words, we exclude Statement-of-Work (SOW) and other “solutions” business. • Any outsourcing arrangement in which the company is paid on an hourly basis but the assignment is indefinite. Roughly three fourths of the 122 companies reported their 2014 staffing revenue amount to us by one of the following ways: completing our survey form (a majority of the firms), through public financial reports, or by confirming to us that our revenue estimate was reasonably accurate. Revenue amounts provided to us (including on survey forms) were checked for consistency with other sources of information before becoming the basis of our estimates. The remaining one fourth of companies declined to share their revenue information (often as a matter of policy), however each company received our revenue estimate— that we produced based on publicly available information—in advance of this report’s publication and had the opportunity to provide us with feedback, as an additional check on the reasonableness of our estimate. Observations • Seventeen firms each generated more than $1 billion in U.S. staffing revenue in 2014. Taken together, these 17 firms accounted for $45.1 billion, or 36.4% of the market. • 64 firms (or roughly half of the firms in this report) generated between $100 million and $200 million in staffing revenue. Taken together, these 64 firms generated $9.3 billion, or 7.5% of the market. • Regarding the skill segment in which each firm generated the largest portion of their temporary staffing revenue, the industrial skill segment was the most common among firms on the list (38 firms), followed by IT (35 firms), and engineering (10 firms). Given their significant market sizes, it is notable that the office/clerical and finance/accounting skill segments were the largest revenue segment for a relatively small number of firms: 6 firms and 2 firms, respectively. None of the 122 firms had the legal skill segment as their first or second largest revenue segment. • Thirteen firms appear on this year’s report that did not appear in last year’s report. The firms are (in alphabetical order): Aya Healthcare, BHI Energy|Staffing Solutions, Cornerstone Staffing Solutions, Creative Circle, Favorite Healthcare Staffing, Medix, Mindlance, Paramount Staffing, Penmac Staffing Services, Source4Teachers, Talascend, The Reserves Network, and Willis Group.
