Official Rules a. Basketball rules are adopted from National Federation of State High School Association rules. Below is a set of general rules and adaptations from those rules. When no rule exists the NFHS rules will be used. 2. Players a. Teams will consist of 5 players. b. At least 4 players must start the game. c. A team may continue to play with less than 4 players as long as the intramural staff believes they have a reasonable chance to win the game. d. Team captains should have their teams signed in 10 minutes before each game. e. All players must check in with the intramural staff prior to playing. Please make sure the scorekeepers have received your id, that you have completed a waiver, and given the scorekeeper your number for the game. f. Players may warm up on the court if no game is being played on their assigned court (please be courteous to the other teams who are playing) 3. Substitutions a. Substitutions may be made during dead ball situation. Notify the scorers’ table and the referee will beckon in subs before a player is allowed to enter. b. Substitutions during free-throws will only occur if the player is replacing an injured player, replacing a disqualified player or it is prior to the last of shot of the free throw sequence. 4. The Game a. (2) 20 minute halves with a 2 minute half-time. b. The clock will stop only during any dead ball situations in the last two minutes of the second half. c. Each team will be allow 3 timeouts i. 3 full time out of one minute in length ii. No timeouts will carry over from regulation to the overtime period 5. Overtime a. Both teams will be given a one (1) minute break before the start of overtime. b. Overtime will consist of a three (3) minute running clock, c. The clock will be continuous only stopping on a dead ball situations with 1 minute left. d. A team is allowed (1) Full time-out during the overtime period, but may not carry over any time-outs from regulation play. e. Individual and team fouls will be carried over from the end of regulation time. A jump ball will start the overtime period. 6. Free Throws a. Players in marked lane spaces may now enter the lane when the ball touches the ring or backboard. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. b. The shooter may not enter until the free throw has touched the ring or the backboard. c. Players outside the 3pt line and above the free throw line extended must be above the 3pt circle and above the free throw line extended until the ball has touched the ring or backboard. d. Bonus will be awarded on the 7th team foul. All foul shots will be worth one point. On the tenth foul and there after double bonus will be awarded (two free throws). Half-court Rule a. Teams will have 10 seconds to bring the ball past the division line in all leagues. Equipment a. Intramural Sports will supply game balls only. Teams should supply their own practice balls. b. Teams will also be allowed to check out jerseys from the supervisor. c. Teams must wear similar color jerseys and they should all be in the same color family i. Example- Teams may wear similar shades of blue, but teams may not wear mostly blue jerseys and one person is wearing a black jersey ii. The intramural staff has final judgment on team jerseys. If it is too confusing the team will be asked to wear the jerseys provided by the Department of University Recreation d. Team jerseys must have numbers on them i. No Tape is allowed for numbers ii. The number must be visible to the entire intramural staff Dunking a. Dunking is only permitted on courts that have break away rims. Hanging is not permitted unless it is done to prevent being undercut by another player. Players violating this rule will be administered a technical foul. If you dunk before the game has started you be awarded a technical foul Post-Game a. At the end of the game, all jerseys must be returned to the referees. Captains are responsible for moving their teams off the court quickly and to sign the score sheet to verify the final score. Fouls a. Five personal fouls per player is the limit. Upon fouling out, a player must leave the court immediately after the fifth foul. b. If a player is charged with two technical fouls, he/she will be ejected from the game. c. If a player is charged with an intentional foul the opponent will be awarded two shots and the ball at the spot nearest the foul. d. *If a player is charged with a flagrant foul, he/she will be ejected from that game, two free throws will be taken by the opposing team and possession nearest the spot of the foul, and the offending player is suspended from the following game. e. Ejected participants must leave the playing area and the facility. In general they must be out of sight and out of sound of the playing area. If the player does not leave in a reasonable amount of time the game may be forfeited by the decision of the intramural staff. Alternate Possession/Jump Ball a. A jump ball will be used to start the game and the overtime period to determine ball possession. All other jump ball situations will incorporate the alternate possession rule. Mercy Rule a. If a team is losing by 50 or more points at halftime then the game will be called and ended. b. If a team is losing by 30 points with less than 5 minutes to play the game will be called. c. If a team is losing by 20 points with 2 minutes left the game will be called. 14. Coed Modifications a. Each teams will consist of 5 players on the court. b. A team must start the game with at least 2 males and 2 females on the court. c. A team must also have 2 male and 2 females on the court at all times. Exceptions i. If a team drops below 4 players because of injury or disqualification. If the intramural staff believes that team has a reasonable opportunity to win the game, the game may continue ii. The intramural staff has the discretion for this ruling d. The fifth player may be male or female. i. Examples allowed: 1. 2 male player and 3 female 2. 3 male players and 2 females 3. 2 male and 2 female e. The game will be played with the Women’s Regulation Sized Basketball according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. i. 28.5 inches in circumference f. All other basketball rules will be similar to men’s and women’s play 15. Contact Rules added. Rule 10-12 NFHS. The following acts constitute a foul when committed against the ball handler/dribbler a. Placing two hands on the player. b. Placing and keeping a hand on the dribbler. c. Contacting the player more than once with the same hand or alternating hands. d. Placing an extended arm bar on the players.
