PROVISIONAL POPULATION TABLES & STATEMENTS
A BRIEF ANALYSIS
BRIEF ANALYSIS OF RESULT
Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory in the Indian Union both in terms of area and
population. The provisional population of UT of Lakshadweep as on 00.00 hours of 1st March, 2011
is 64429 consisting 33106 Males and 31323 Females. With this population Lakshadweep contributes
0.01 % to the total Indian population of 1,21,01,93,422. As like in the past, Lakshadweep adorns the
bottom most position in population ranking among the States and Union Territories in India
Decadal Growth Rate
The Population of UT of Lakshadweep is 64429 as on 00.000 hours of 1st March, 2011.
Which shows that the population has increased by 3779 persons during last 10 years. The Growth
Rate of Population from 2001 – 2011 is 6.23% which is 11.07 % lower than the Growth rate of 1991
-2001 (.ie 17.3%). Among the 10 Community Development blocks in the UT of Lakshadweep, the
decadal population growth rate during 2001-2011 varies between 10.78% in Kavaratti as the highest
and 1.03 % in Kadmat as lowest. Distribution of Population, Decadal growth rate, Population Density
and Sex Ratio Community Development Block wise are given in Table – 1.
Population Density
Population density is the number of persons living in one square kilometre of area. The
Density of population reveals the scatterness of population in a well defined geographical area. The
population density of Lakshadweep during 2011 census is 2013 persons per Sq. Km against 1895 per
Sq.km in 2001 census. It reveals that, in the tiny coral paradise, the population pressure on one square
kilometre of area has increased by 118 persons during last 10 years. Since the area of Lakshadweep
has remained the same with 32 Sq.kms the density of population pertaining to Lakshadweep is directly
proportional to the increase in population in each census. Among 10 Community Development Blocks
in Lakshadweep Amini retained at highest density of population and kalpeni in the lowest. Population
density for Lakshadweep and Community Development Blocks for 2001 and 2011 has been shown in
Table 1 and ranking of Community Development Blocks by population density for 2001 and 2011 has
been given in Statement-3.
