BACKGROUND
Many Ancestry.com family trees show that Levi Methvin is the son of Thomas Methvin and
Mary Botfield. Joan Methvin disagrees with many that believe that Levi Methvin is the son of
Thomas Methvin and Mary Botfield.
The object of this document is to summarize information found on this matter. I will add to this
document as additional information is found.

M. Griggs...You may have already corrected your records but in case you would like to do so, I
descend from Levi via his GRANDFATHER Thomas and Mary [Botfield] Methvin. Levi was
the so of James and wife Eunice Gordy Methvin. In mid-1780 the Gordy, Hearn and James
Methvin removed from Maryland/Deleware to VA, NC, GA, AL and LA. [over time]. If you are
still working on Methvin I would love to hear from you as I am working to connect the Thomas
and Nathan Methvin lines to Thomas of Worcestor County, MD and we could explore theories.

Mary, you may already have this info but I thought I would leave it here in case others read this
as I did. Levi was born in Maryland as presented on his tombstone and reported by his children
on the 1880 US Federal Census. Some of the information you have comes from David Pierces
Methvins Around the World website which was written by Frances Bates Fortune in her book

"Beginnings" c 1986. Much more information about this family has been presented since that
date. Levi is NOT the son of Thomas and Mary. He is their grandson through their son James
and his wife Eunice Gordy. The Gordy and Hearn families and James Methvin removed from
Maryland/Delaware in 1775-1780 to VA, NC, GA, LA, AL etc.
Thomas Methvin was born 1705-08 to James Methvin of Baltimore County, MD and Mary was
born 1709 to John and Elizabeth Botfield of Talbot County, MD. Joan Methvin

It appears that there are several Thomas Methvin family trees at this site and several of them are
so completely wrong. I have tried to contact the submitters, however, their email addresses are
no longer in service. So,
Debbie Nichols Thomas Methvin and Mary Botfield is WRONG in too many ways to mention
here. Anyone, wanting information for Thomas and Mary Botfield Methvin contact me. Thomas
Methvin was NOT born in 1745 as he was already married in 1730 Talbot County. Mary
Botfield his wife was NOT the grand-daughter of Mary Methvin's will-named children; as she
was born in 1709 St. Peter's Parish, MD. Levi Methvin was their GRANDSON NOT son, HE
WAS NOT BORN IN SCOTLAND as reported on his obit and his tombstone [where do people
get this?] The Nathan listed as their child WAS NOT IN FACT THEIR CHILD, because he was
not mentioned his Mary's will and if he were in fact born in Scotland his parents were living
Maryland according to land deeds. It goes on, and on, so PLEASE disregard the Levi ancestor
information as it is totally UNRESEARCHED and merely copied from someone else's work which was wrong. Joan Methvin

The family tree by Cathy and her sister for Thomas Methvin is wrong. She appears to descend
from Levi Methvin who died in Alabama but she reports his ancestors incorrectly.
Thomas Methvin died date unknown. He married Nancy on 1767.
Notes for Thomas Methvin:
Believed to be one of the original colony of Methvins from Scotland to come to US. This group

of Methvins came to the U S from Scotland and were brothers and cousins who landed in New
York, NY dispersing to SC, TX, AL, GA, and VA. It is believed to have included Thomas,
James, William, Daniel, John, Samuel, adn Nathan Methvin.
THIS PARAGRAPH COMES FROM THE 1932 JOHN F. METHVIN LETTER WHICH HAS
RECENTLY BEEN DISPROVED 2005. THOMAS IS THE SON OF JAMES METHVIN OF
BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD C 1699.
More About Thomas Methvin and Nancy:
Thomas Methvin married Mary Botfield in 1730. His son Thomas married a Nancy but not until
the 1820's.
Marriage: 1767 HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THIS DATE CAME FROM.

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM OF ROOTSWEB DESCENDANTS PROMOTE THAT THESE
ARE THE CHILDREN OF A THOMAS METHVIN WHO DIED IN LOUISANNA C 1830,
BY SOURCE OF A SUCCESSION RECORD POSTED IN 1836. YOU WOULD HAVE TO
CONTACT DESCENDANTS FOR THOSE LINES. FORTUNATELY THEY ARE NOT
REPORTED HERE.
