Friends of the MILWAUKIE CENTER, Inc. ANNUAL REPORT

Friends of the
MILWAUKIE CENTER,
Inc.
ANNUAL REPORT
August 2010
Mission of the Friends of the Milwaukie Center, Inc is to assist the Milwaukie Center in
educating the citizens about the need for and availability of resources and services, especially for
the aging and disabled and to assist the Milwaukie Center financially to provide existing and needed
services.
2010 “Friend of the
Center” Award
Each year the Friends recognize someone who
has been a ―stand out‖ friend to the Center and
has really made a difference by their involvement
with the Center. This year we recognized Art
Hanson. In addition to being a member of the
Friends Board of Directors, Art has been very
involved in the Tax-Aide Program at the Center
for many years. He is the local coordinator for
our site and will be assuming an even larger role
next year. Art also volunteers for many fundraising programs such as evening Bingo and
special events.
The Center simply would not be able to
provide its programs and services without the
dedication and passion of people like Art. He
received a beautiful plaque and a basket of
goodies at the Donor Appreciation Luncheon—
just a small token of our appreciation.
Art joins an exclusive club of past winners:
Jim McBee, Katie Rudfelt, Bob and Bernnie
Kendall, Willamette View, Inc., Bob’s Red Mill,
James and Anne McCready and Clackamas
Federal Credit Union are the most recent
recipients of the ―Friend of the Center‖ Award.
If you know of someone who has been an
outstanding friend of the Center, let us know who
they are and we will consider them for next
year’s award.
Congratulations, Art, on receiving this well-deserved award!

Milwaukie Center is a multi-purpose community center operated by
the North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District as a focal point
for senior services, recreation and learning. The Friends mission is
to support the programs and services of the Milwaukie Center.
From the Chairperson:
Although it has been a tough year for fund-raising, we have had
great success this past year with the $5 fund. A couple hundred
people who had not previously given made donations this year.
That is well over $1,000 more towards programs and services at
the Milwaukie Center, such as scholarships to help toward a
class, or the emergency fund to help with a client’s electric bill or
to buy a prescription or many other needs at the Center. Just
think of what we could do if everyone who read the newsletter
gives $5—that would be over 10,000 people or $50,000! Our
goal this next year is to reach out to more people who are willing
to donate just $5. If you have never given before, consider using
the form on the back of this publication, and send in what you
can afford, even if it is only $5. Thank you.

Milwaukie Center Website
The Friends of the Milwaukie
Center maintain a web site for the
Milwaukie Center:
www.milwaukiecenter.com
Our primary purpose is to give
people the option of receiving the
newsletter on line. The Friends pay
almost $16,000 to print and mail the
newsletter each year and yet
posting it on the web site is a very
minimal cost to the Friends.
If you would like to receive the
newsletter by e-mail, please call the
Friends office to sign up.

Volunteers Make the Difference!
Volunteers perform many jobs at the Milwaukie Center and the
Friends are no exception. Our Board of Directors is an allvolunteer board. Almost all of the fund-raising activities are
chaired and operated by volunteers—such as the Gift Shop,
Rose Garden, Bingo and special events. A Quilting Committee
finishes quilts for clients with all proceeds to the Friends.
Volunteers count money and make deposits, sell raffle tickets.
and prepare and file tax returns. The list goes on and on—there
is no end to the commitment and dedication of our volunteers.
If you would like to be a part of the Friends by volunteering,
contact Colleen in the Friends’ office.
From the Center Director:
The numerous programs and services at the Milwaukie Center are provided to ensure that folks
in the second half of their lives can stay independent for as long as possible. This can mean
many different things: accessing support for care givers, participating in an exercise class to keep
yourself in good balance and strong, using our bus transportation to get to the grocery store,
receiving advocacy for an issue you are dealing with, getting a full lunch meal either home
delivered or at the Center, or learning a new skill such as wood carving, computers or painting…
and so much more. The Milwaukie Center is YOUR community resource.
This special issue of the Friends of the Milwaukie Center annual report contains the names of
hundreds of people who have determined that making financial donations to the Milwaukie
Center makes sense. On behalf of our patrons who benefit from the donations, thank you to our
donors! We know that you have a choice where to gift your donations and therefore we work
hard to be trusted stewards of the funds you provide. Your donations stay in the local community
to help us provide as many programs and services as possible. Through your support, an
amazingly committed staff and an army of volunteers, Milwaukie Center reaches out to
thousands of people. We could not do it all without you. Thank you for being a true FRIEND of
the Milwaukie Center!
P.S. It is never too late and no donation is too small to become a friend of the Milwaukie Center!
We appreciate and welcome all support.
Donor Appreciation Luncheon
The Friends held their 5th Annual Donor Appreciation Luncheon on June 21. A light lunch was
served to attendees. The Friends presented gifts to the Center at the luncheon; these gifts are
the result of fund-raising activities and donations from our supporters. The checks presented were:
Nutrition - $4,000; Transportation - $4,000; A Place At The Center - $2,000;
Social Services - $12,000
These gifts are in addition to $1,500 in scholarship funds provided throughout the year for classes,
$18,000 in costs for the newsletter and other miscellaneous Center projects. The Friends are
fortunate to be able to support the Center at this level. None of this would be possible without the
support of our donors and patrons. The luncheon is a small way of showing our appreciation.
If you give a donation of any size to the Friends, you are welcome to attend the Donor Appreciation
Luncheon, usually held the last Wednesday in June. Watch for it in the June 2011 newsletter!
Sara Hite Memorial Rose Garden
The Friends pay for maintenance, fertilizer, spraying and new roses in the garden each year. It
has been determined that funds which have been set aside for the Rose Garden will run out in
two years. Part of the challenge is the losses to the Fran Whitehill Rose Garden Endowment
Fund. It was getting very close to providing enough income to sustain the Rose Garden when the
economic downturn hit. The Rose Garden Committee has been busy this last year with several
fund-raising activities. In November they held the Big Bash Bake Sale, and will host this event
again on November 19. A plant sale was held this May with great success. These two events
netted almost $1,000 for the Rose Garden Fund. There will be the annual quilt raffle starting in
September and concluding in November. We have a beautiful quilt this year, so don’t miss your
opportunity to purchase the winning ticket! To find out how you can help support this beautiful
venue, contact Colleen in the Friends office.

ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT
Income
The figures below reflect the major sources of income for the Friends of the Milwaukie
Center. We rely on donations from individuals, such as yourself, for the Annual Campaign and
Tax-Aide. We have an army of volunteers to help with fund-raisers such as special events,
Bingo, Gift Shop and the Quilting Committee. We lost a little ground on our Endowment Fund
earnings, but were still able to realize a nice figure.
With the economy still a concern, many of our major donors were not able to give as much
as they usually do. However, many new donors gave to the $5 Fund which made up the
difference and we were able to meet our fund-raising goal for the year. Bingo was a great
surprise this year, exceeding its budget by over $8,000! Our income was about $15,000 less
than last year, but we were still able to meet all of our obligations and promises of support to
the Center—and we couldn’t do it without you!

ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT (CON’T)
Expenses
The Friends of the Milwaukie Center’s sole purpose is to support the Milwaukie Center and
all of our funds are used towards that purpose. Even payroll costs are considered support as
the Friends staff help throughout the Center. Friends staff solicit sponsorships and funds,
outreach in the community, put on special events, help with room set ups and even provide
directions to lost ―hall wanderers‖.
As you can see, the Friends spent slightly more than we took in. We actually projected a
$10,000 deficit and it ended up being a little over $4,000 so the news is good! Newsletter
printing and postage costs continue to rise which is a great concern. The Friends have also
acquired more expenses for the Web Site which is currently reflected in the newsletter costs,
as we distribute the newsletter through the web site. We did not take on any special projects
this coming year but continue to support the programs and services at the Center.
Your donations help support all of these funds and programs, large and small. We couldn’t do
it without you!

WHAT
IS AN
ENDOWMENT FUND?
The Friends of the Milwaukie Center maintain and oversee five Endowment Funds: the
Milwaukie Center Fund, Nutrition/Transportation Fund, Fran Whitehill Rose Garden Fund,
Scholarship Fund and the newly created Joan Young Director’s Fund. The money in these
funds is never spent. The income and earnings from the funds support the various programs
and services the funds are dedicated to. For example, the interest, dividends and earnings
from the Nutrition/Transportation Fund is given to those departments each year to apply
towards their operating costs. The income from the Fran Whitehill Rose Garden Fund helps
pay for maintenance and supplies to take care of the Sara Hite Memorial Rose Garden.
All gifts received in memory or in honor of friends or family members are added to the
Milwaukie Center Endowment Fund. In addition, $2,000 from Thursday evening Bingo proceeds
are added to the Endowment Fund each year. The Friends of the Milwaukie Center also
receive bequests and other gifts specifically intended to build these funds. Below is a list of the
generous donors who have contributed to the fund over the past year. If you made a gift in
memory of a friend or loved one and do not see your name listed, please call the Friends office
so we may correct our records.

ENDOWMENT FUND
Endowment
The Friends of the Milwaukie Center Endowment Funds have been on a roller coaster ride along
with the rest of the nation’s funds and investments in recent years. From a high balance of over
$400,000, our funds dropped to a low of $271,877 in February 2009. Fortunately, the market has
been recuperating along with our Endowments Funds and our balance now stands at $368,873.
We just received more good news in the form of a bequest of $80,000, which will be headed for the
endowment funds.
Although for many people this may sound like a lot of money, in the world of endowment funds, ours
is considered small. The Endowment Funds currently produce about $15,000-$20,000 income a
year. Our goal is to build the Endowment Funds to over 1 million dollars which will provide about
$50,000 per year in income.
If you would like more information on how you can help build these funds and secure the future of the
Milwaukie Center, contact the Friends office at 503-653-8100.

Project Grants
Periodically, the Milwaukie Center staff will identify a need or project that requires more funding than
is available. Fortunately, there are a lot of foundations and charitable trusts set up for this very
purpose. They award grants to organizations such as ours for a worthy cause or project after going
through an application process. This past year, we were fortunate to be awarded several grants to
expand the Meals on Wheels staging area. The meal boxes were being staged in a small passageway
and drivers had to figure out creative ways to carry them through the area and out the heavy exterior
door. The area has now been expanded and an automatic door installed. We also increased the office
space for the Nutrition Program staff. Grants totaling $34,940 were awarded from:
Ann & Bill Swindells Charitable Trust
The Collins Foundation
Clackamas County Special Projects Grant
Many thanks to our wonderful grantors for their funding support. This next year we hope to apply for
grants to upgrade the audio/visual capabilities at the Center. Technology has advanced tremendously
in the 30 years since the Milwaukie Center was built!

The Camassia Society
HONORING THOSE WHO SUSTAIN THE FUTURE OF THE
MILWAUKIE CENTER
Giving to the endowment is not new
at the Milwaukie Center
Every year, income from the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center’s investment funds is put
to work to sustain the Milwaukie Center’s
programs and services. Without the infusion
of dollars from these reserve funds, many of
the rich, diverse programs of the Center
would be lost or reduced. As income to the
Center from other resources shrinks, support
from the Friends has become more vital.
The Board of Directors of the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center has made building the
endowment to at least $1 million its major
priority in the next three years. We hope that
you can help us achieve this goal.
Planned Giving
Among the easiest and most painless ways
to give is through a ―future‖ gift planned in
the form of a bequest. By naming the
Friends of the Milwaukie Center as one of
the beneficiaries of your trust, will, life
insurance, retirement plan or investment
account, you will be among those who are
giving back to the Center for all the joy and
enrichment it has provided for you and helps
to ensure a strong future for those who will
follow.
Friends of the Milwaukie Center
Camassia Society
Camassia is the botanical name for the
Camas quamash. The bulb of the camas
sustained native peoples in the Northwest
for thousands of years. They learned to
cultivate and harvest the bulbs and store
them for winter food. The camassia is an
appropriate symbol for the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center endowment. By donating
to the endowment, we can ensure that we
have stored away the resources that will
sustain the Milwaukie Center’s great
programs and services in perpetuity.
To become a member of the Camassia
Society, simply inform the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center of your intention to
provide a future gift for the endowment
through your estate plans. This information
can be kept completely confidential or you
may decide to have your name(s) listed as
members for publication. For further
information about how to ensure your gift
will go to the endowment, please contact
Colleen Sinsel at the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center office, 503-653-8100.

CELEBRATIONS!
The Celebrations program is an expansion of gifts to our Endowment Fund in honor or memory of
a loved one. If you have a friend or relative celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special
event, you can make a donation in their name to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center Endowment
Fund. We all know someone who doesn’t really need another trinket or knick knack. This is a
perfect way to recognize their special event OR do you have a birthday or anniversary coming up?
Let others know you would like your special day to be recognized through a Celebrations gift to
the Friends of the Milwaukie Center.
A thoughtful card will be sent acknowledging your gift in their name. We have a variety of cards
available for many different occasions. Simply fill out the contact card on this page and send it to
the Friends along with your gift. (All donations are tax deductible)
Together we will celebrate your thoughtful gift.

**SPECIAL EVENTS**
Wine & Roses Mystery Dinner
and Silent Auction
Our major special event fund-raiser of the
year is the Wine & Roses Dinner. For the
last several years, the New Century Players
have been performing a murder mystery
play. This year the title of the play was
―Deadly Dancing‖, centered around a ballroom dancing competition.
In addition to the show, there is a silent
auction. About 50 items were in the silent
auction and great deals were had by all!
Upcoming Events
Lumberjack Breakfast – Join us Sat,
September 25 for the always popular
all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. Tasty
sausages, eggs, juice and coffee are also
served.
Local service organizations will be chopping
and stacking wood for the emergency
firewood program. With rising utility costs
and the current economy, this program has
become more important than ever.
This event raised almost $6,000 this year
making it our largest special event. Next
year we will be having a special casino night
for the Wine and Roses Dinner. Be sure and
get your tickets early!
New Event!
Great buys on silent auction items!
Spaghetti Dinner and Texas
Hold ’em Poker Tournament
The Spaghetti Dinner is one of our most
popular events with a record crowd of 400
people this year! It is held in partnership with
the Clackamas Rotary Club and has been
our second most successful event as far as
funds raised.
Dale Michael, cook with the Milwaukie
Center Nutrition Program, serves up the
most delicious spaghetti sauce in town (or
so we have been told many times— and not
just by Dale).
Join us next year on February 26 for the
spaghetti dinner. If you are feeling lucky,
sign up for the Poker Tournament and
receive a free ticket for dinner!
10
The Friends have a committee which is
starting to meet and talk about a new event
for ladies only. It will be a fun night out
with the ―girls‖ and lots of pampering will
be involved! Check our September
Centerpoint newsletter for more information.
Special events are the most visible and fun
part of fund-raising. It is also an easy way to
show your support for the Center. Join us
for a delicious meal at the Wine and Roses
Dinner, Spaghetti Dinner or Lumberjack
Breakfast. And don’t forget about other
fund-raising events hosted by other
departments at the Center - ―Best in the
West‖ Bazaar, Daddy/Daughter Dinner
Dances and the Quilt Show, to name a few.
FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES
In addition to relying on the commitment and generosity of our donors, the Friends of the
Milwaukie Center conducts several on-going fund-raisers. Along with special events, every one
of these activities provides income that helps the Friends achieve their mission. By participating
in or supporting any of these activities, you are helping the Milwaukie Center maintain its
programs and services.
Gift Shop
The Gift Shop has operated almost as long
as the Milwaukie Center. Starting out as the
Gift Nook, it was literally that—a small nook
in the Center. It has grown to the Shop we
now know and love. Providing an outlet for
crafts from people of all ages, you are sure to
find a treasure you just can’t live without!
Twenty percent of the proceeds benefit the
Milwaukie Center. The Gift Shop has helped
out with many Center projects. This year, the
Gift Shop has dedicated funds to purchase
Meals on Wheels car signs, a new camera
and programmable thermostats.
Bingo
This Thursday night staple has long been
one of the Friend’s best fund-raisers. Each
year, $2,000 of the Bingo proceeds is
donated to the Endowment Fund to help it
grow and in addition, support other programs
and services. This past year, Bingo has
picked up tremendously and provided
twice the income we projected! Join us on
Thursday nights at 6:30 for the fun and
maybe win the big jackpot!
Recycling
As most of you know, we have recycled
newspapers for many years. It is a steady
income that can be counted on month after
month. This fund-raiser is conducted in
partnership with the Milwaukie Lions,
benefitting their organization also. Drop your
newspapers off at the large green container
in front of the Rose Garden. The Friends also
recycle used cell phones and ink cartridges.
Even phones that are old or broken can be
recycled. Just drop them off at the Friends
office the next time you are at the Center.
Annual Campaign
This is the Friends’ primary fund-raiser each
year. We rely on patrons, clients, community
members and businesses to support the
Milwaukie Center. Without the people listed
throughout the pages of this newsletter, we
could not do what we do!
Entertainment Books
Each fall, the Friends sell Entertainment
Books to benefit the Endowment Fund.
For only $20, you can receive thousands
of dollars in coupons or half price items.
Brick Sales
Engraved bricks are placed in the Sara
Hite Memorial Rose Garden once a year.
Proceeds benefit the continued maintenance
of the garden. Buy a brick to honor someone
or as a memorial. Bricks sell for $35 a piece
or 3 for $100. The Rose Garden Committee
also holds a quilt raffle each fall to help
support their labor of love.
Quilting Committee
Speaking of quilts, the dedicated women of
the Friends Quilters meet every Thursday on
the stage at the Milwaukie Center. Not only
do they provide the quilt for the Rose Garden
raffle, but occasionally the Quilt Show raffle
quilt too. Throughout the year, this group of
volunteers complete quilts for customers and
donate the proceeds to the Friends’ general
fund.
