Algebra Part 5

Dividing Monomials & Polynomials




Divide everything by 8
40 divided by 8 is 5 and 16 divided by 8 is 2
5x5 – 2x
The answer is simplified enough

Start by factoring out a 3a2

Do the division
• An easy one!!!
• Divide all terms by the denominator
• 50x4 – 7x3 + x
• Remember that when dividing by a negative:
• Signs flip
• Powers are subtracted
-5x4 + 4x2 + 1



A little more involved
1 – 2x2y + 3x4y5
Remember that powers are subtracted during
division and added during multiplication


3x times what would equal 3x2? Ans: x
Place it on top and do the multiplication
3x * x = 3x2, write it down. x * -1 = -x
Do the math, subtracting a negative is same
as adding a positive…11x + x = 12x
Bring down the remainder….-4
What times -1 equals -4…Ans: 4
Put it on top and do the multiplication
4*3x = 12x, 4*-1=-4
Ans: x+4




What times 2a = 6a2? Ans: 3a
Write it down and do the math 6a2 + 15a
Do the math – bring down the remainder
What times 2a = 2a…Ans: 1
Write it down and do the math 2a + 5
Subtract, the remainder is 3
Ans: (3a+1)+ 3/(2a+5)







What times 2a = 10a2…5a
Write it down and do the math
10a2 + 15a…subtract and bring down the
remainder
What times 2a = 4a…Ans: 2
Do the math…4a + 6
Subtract
Ans: 5a+2 + 3/(2a+3)

Keep practicing long division of polynomials
and it becomes easy.
