SPRING PREVIEW
Experienced Bulls Eye MAC Title
18 starters return for 2008 season
When the University at Buffalo football
team takes the field for the 2008 season, it will
be greeted with a feeling of excitement and
optimism that hasn’t been felt at UB Stadium
in a long time.
Led by 2007 Mid-American Conference
Coach of the Year Turner Gill, Buffalo returns
18 starters, including four All-MAC selections,
to a team that went 5-3 in MAC play a season
ago and earned a share of the 2007 MAC East
Division regular season title.
The five wins overall were the most by
the Bulls since moving up to Division I-A in
1999, and was just one of many milestones
achieved by the football team last year.
Here’s a look by position at what Gill and
his staff will be evaluating this spring:
Quarterback
Buffalo will enter spring drills with Drew Willy
(Randolph, NJ/Randolph) calling the signals
for the offense. The senior completed his
third and finest season as the Bulls’ starting
quarterback in 2007.
Willy set a new mark for completions in a
season (258), had the highest pass efficiency
rating in school history (135.7), the highest
completion percentage (68.4%) in a single
season and had 15 touchdowns with only six
interceptions. Willy also set the school record
Drew Willy
for completions in a game
(34) at Kent State while
passing for a career-high
334 yards. He was twice
named MAC East Division Offensive Player of
the Week, including after
throwing for 330 yards
at Penn State. Going into
his senior season, Willy is
already tied for the career
mark in completions (545)
and needs 2,035 yards
to set the career passing
mark next season.
Redshirt freshman
Ed Young (Fort Worth,
TX/Eastern Hills) will also
see time at quarterback in
spring drills. He redshirted
last season and worked
with the scout teams. A
dual-threat quarterback
in high school, Young
threw for 1,547 yards and
18 passing touchdowns,
James Starks

yards and 12 touchdowns

as a senior.
Walk-on Cory Jorgensen (Williamston, He also had 41 receptions for 311 yards and
MI/Williamston) will also get some reps at two touchdowns. A threat to go the distance
quarterback. He worked with the scout team every play, Starks had four touchdowns that
covered 70 or more yards, including a 92-yard
last season.
“The number one spot is secure,” Gill touchdown run at Miami.
A different style runner, junior Mario
said. “We will be evaluating everyone else Henry

James Starks (Niagara Falls, NY/Ni- carry) and a touchdown. His best game of the
agara Falls) had a breakout season in 2007 en season came at Temple where he ran for 125
route to earning All-MAC Second Team honors yards on only 17 carries, including a 33-yard
for the second straight season. Starks rushed touchdown. He also hauled in 15 catches for
for a career-best 1,103 yards to become the 75 yards on the season.
Brandon Thermilus (Flower Mound,
first UB running back in the Division I-A era to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He scored 12 TX/Marcus) is a versatile back who can play
touchdowns on the ground - the most in the both the tailback and fullback positions. As
D I-A era. Starks finished the season strong by a redshirt freshman, Thermilus appeared in
averaging 129.4 yards rushing over the final all 12 games and ran for 85 yards and three
seven games of the year, including a career- touchdowns. He also had eight catches for

65 yards on the year. He proved to be an
excellent short-yardage back with a powerful
running style.
Chris Scharon (Salem, NH/Salem) appeared in nine games and started four at
fullback. He is an excellent blocker who had
a career-high seven catches for 48 yards and
a touchdown.
Junior Da’Von McCune (Buffalo, NY/
City Honors) has seen action in his first two
seasons with the Bulls and will add depth to
the running back position.
“The running backs are a talented group
of guys,” Gill said. “They need to continue to
improve in terms of pass protection.”
Wide Receiver
a rugged blocker.
Also returning to the lineup is senior
Robert Yealu (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove)
who missed the 2007 campaign with a knee
injury. In 2006, Yealu had six catches for 97
yards, including a career-best 23-yard reception at Auburn. He will be held out of spring
practice while continuing to rehab.
“This group needs to do better at the
point of attack,” Gill said. “The guys that
are participating in the spring are a young
group.”
Offensive Line
Naaman Roosevelt
The Bulls have a deep and talented pool
of receivers entering spring practice, led by
junior Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo, NY/St.
Joseph’s). A third-team All-MAC selection in
2007, Roosevelt led the Bulls with 63 catches
for 766 yards and four touchdowns. His 63
catches was the fourth-highest single season
total in school history.
Ernest Jackson (Rochester, NY/GatesChili) is coming off the most productive season of his career. The senior wideout started
all 12 games and hauled in 53 catches for 645
yards and six touchdowns - all career highs.
His six touchdown receptions led all wide
receivers.
Brett Hamlin (Jupiter, FL/William T.
Dwyer) fully recovered from a foot injury that
sidelined him for most of the 2006 campaign
to total 38 catches for 415 yards in 2007. The
junior receiver caught his first career touchdown to force overtime in the Bulls’ win over
Kent State.
Gary Rice (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton) is
coming off his second season as a wide receiver after making the move from defensive
back. The Bulls’ senior had 10 catches for 49
yards in 2007. He had a pair of four-reception
games on the season. Speedy Terrell Jackson (Temple, TX/
Temple) saw the majority of his action as a
kick returner. He did have one catch on the
season for five yards.
Marcus Rivers (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) redshirted last season and is ready
to contribute in 2008. The 6-4 Rivers is the
Bulls’ tallest receiver. He averaged 14 yards per
catch as a senior in high school and scored a
pair of touchdowns.
Junior Alex Pierre (Hackensack, NJ/
Hackensack) and sophomore Skyler Hagg
(Glendale, AZ/Ironwood) both shone on
special teams last year and add depth to the
position.
“We have three experienced receivers,”
Gill said. “Our staff is trying to find the fourth
receiver.”
Tight Ends
The tight end position is another spot
where the Bulls are very deep.
Jesse Rack (Maspeth, NY/Christ the
King) led the Bulls with a 12.7 yards-percatch average while making 15 catches for
191 yards in 2007. Four of his catches went
for at least 15 yards
and he scored one
touchdown.
Aaron Connacher (Jamestown,
NY/Jamestown) appeared in 10 games
as a true freshman
in 2007. He had five
catches for 28 yards.
He had a season-high
two receptions in his
first career game at
Rutgers.

a versatile lineman who has started 24 games
at both the guard and tackle position over his
career. Last season, he started 11 games at left

Local product Peter Bittner (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) started all 12
games as a redshirt freshman last season.
Senior Jon Geddes (Colonie, NY/Colonie) and sophomore Andrew West (Croswell,
MI/Croswell-Lexington) will also battle for a
role in the starting lineup after continuing to
develop. Each player has started at least one
game in their career.
Chris Lauzze (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke), who spent last season as the Bulls’
long snapper, will battle for the starting
center job vacated by Richard.
Matt Bacoulis (Des Plaines, IL/Maine

seasons as a reserve for the Bulls and can play
both guard and tackle.
Sophomore Brandon Flanagan (North

and two quarterback hurries.
Dane Robinson (Baltimore, MD/Calvert
Hall) started 10 games at the defensive tackle
spot. He finished the 2007 season with 18
tackles, including three for a loss, and a quarterback hurry.
Also returning to the defensive line
is Chris Callahan (Webster, NY/Webster
Thomas) who started 10 games at defensive
end last season. Seven of his 34 tackles on the
season were for a loss, including 1.5 sacks. He
added a quarterback hurry. Callahan finished
the season at linebacker and has the ability
to play either position.
Mike Thompson (Seffner, FL/Armwood)
played in eight games and started the last two
of the season. He finished the season with 14
tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception.
Also looking to add depth to the defensive line will be junior Kevin Johnson
(Newton, NJ/Newton), sophomores Tom
Drewes (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore), Anel Montanez (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull), and Bruno
Lapointe (Lennoxville, Quebec/Champlain
Cegep), redshirt freshman Derrick Brown
(Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) and Gordon
DuBois (Andover, MA/Andover) and freshmen Solomon Richberg (Queens, NY/August
Martin) and Richie Smith (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen
Argyl), who enrolled in January.
“We hope to find depth at the defensive
line,” Gill said. “It is important for our defensive
line to penetrate and make more plays. There
are three solid starters back.”
Linebackers
The linebacker position is one area in which
the Bulls will have to reload after losing a pair
of All-MAC players in Kareem Byrom and Larry
Hutchinson. However, a number of young
players were able to gain valuable experience
last season and should be ready to contribute
on a regular basis in 2008.
David Hubbard (Rancho Cucamonga,
CA/Etiwanda) and Adekunle Akingba
(Brooklyn, NY/Sheepshead Bay) are the lone
seniors in the linebacking corps. Hubbard appeared in 10 games last season and finished
with 23 tackles, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. Akingba started the season at
safety before making the move to linebacker.
He totaled 46 tackles and ranked second on
the team with two forced fumbles.
Fred Branch (Rockville, MD/Seneca Valley) made two starts at outside linebacker as a
true freshman last season. He had 26 tackles,
including two for a loss and a quarterback
hurry in 12 games.
Josh Copeland (Fairborn, OH/Fairborn)
was originally slotted to be a defensive back,
but made the move to linebacker midway
through the season. He had 33 tackles (21
solo), an interception and a pass breakup in
2007.
Sophomore Jerry Housey (Bronx, NY/

in six games last season. He finished the
year with seven tackles. Sophomore Justin

Defensive Backs
The Bulls will feature one of the most
experienced defensive backfields in the MidAmerican Conference in 2008.
As a true freshman, safety Davonte
Shannon (Jeannette, PA/Jeannette) became
Buffalo’s first All-MAC First Team selection in
2007. Although, only entering the starting
lineup in week four, Shannon finished the
season with 123 tackles - the most by a UB
player in its Division I-A era. He had more
tackles than any freshman in the nation
and his 73 solo stops were also the most in
the D I-A era. He also led the Bulls in passes
defended with eight and ranked second on
the squad with three interceptions. Shannon
was also named to the Scout.com Freshman
All-America First Team and The Sporting News
Freshman All-America Second Team.
Mike Newton (Pasadena, MD/Calvert
Hall) returns for his third season as a starting
safety for the Bulls. Newton led the Bulls in
interceptions for the second straight season
with four in 2007. He also tied for third on the
team in tackles with 86. He finished the year
strong by averaging nine tackles over the last
seven games of the season.
Physical cornerback Kendric Hawkins
(Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic)
battled injuries in 2007 and appeared in nine
games. However, he still led the team with six
pass breakups, to go along with 35 tackles,
including four for a loss, an interception, a

forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
As a true freshman Domonic Cook (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s) started the first nine
games of the season at cornerback before
missing the final three games with an injured
hand. Before being slowed by the injury, Cook
had been coming into his own as he had
seven or more tackles in each of his last four
games, including a season-best 11 tackles
against Toledo. He finished the season with
58 tackles and three pass breakups.
When Cook went down, Josh Thomas
(Cedar Hill, TX/Cedar Hill) started the last
three games and the secondary didn’t miss
a beat. Thomas appeared in 11 games total
on the season and had 45 tackles, four pass
breakups and an interception. Junior Chris
Storr (Southfield MI/Southfield) had six
tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup
in ’07 and adds quality depth. Another promising youngster is redshirt freshman Alan
Hayes (Houston, TX/Northland Christian),
a safety.
“This is the strength of our defense,” Gill
said. “Everyone’s returning. Our technique
still needs improvement.”
Special Teams
Kicker A.J. Principe (Columbus, OH/St.
Francis De Sales) was a pleasant surprise
for the Bulls last season. He walked on to
the team in the summer and by the end of
training camp had earned a scholarship. He
also earned the starting kicker job and went
on to have a fantastic season. Principe hit
15-of-20 field goals for the season, including
nine straight at one point, and connected on
32-of-34 PATs in the finest freshman season by
a kicker in UB’s history. He was named Sporting News Freshman All-America Honorable
Mention. Buffalo has the benefit of a strong-legged
kicker in Gerry McGroarty (Wilkes-Barre, PA/
Bishop Hoban) handling kickoff duties. Nine
of his 57 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.
Walk-on George Eldayrie (Clarence, NY/
Clarence) will add depth at kicker.
Australian native Peter Fardon (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Grammar School)
will handle punting duties in the spring. He
has experience in Australian Rules Football.

Football HEAD COACH TURNER GILL
Turner
GILL
Head Football Coach
Third Year at Buffalo
North Texas, ’90
Overall Record: 7-17
Record at Buffalo: 7-17
Hometown: Fort Worth, TX
In just two seasons, head coach Turner Gill has lifted the Buffalo football
program to historic heights and has gained national attention for the Bulls’
youthful program – less than a decade into major college football.
During the 2007 season, Gill earned Mid-American Conference Coach of
the Year honors after leading the Bulls to five wins - the most in its Division
I-A history. The program had won 10 games in its first seven years in I-A, they
won half of that total in ‘07. UB finished with a 5-3 conference record, including a 4-2 mark in the MAC East Division to claim a share of the regular season
title. Prior to the 2007 campaign, UB had won eight MAC games total in the
previous eight years.
In addition, under Gill’s tutelage Buffalo had eight players selected to the
All-MAC after having just seven in their first eight years of conference play.
The Bulls had eight MAC Players of the Week had two players on national
semifinal “watch lists” – Ben Woods (Ray Guy Award – top punter) and Trevor
Scott (Ted Hendricks Award – top defensive end), while senior center Jamey
Richard was invited to play in the Hula Bowl and earned an invitation to the
NFL Combine.
Three of UB’s eight All-MAC players came from Gill’s first two recruiting
classes, including safety Davonte Shannon, a true freshman, who became
UB’s first All-MAC first-team selection. Buffalo enjoyed its first winning record
at home since moving up to Division I-A and its two MAC road wins was also
its best effort since joining the conference.
Gill, who also served as the offensive coordinator, directed an offense
that scored 291 points - the most in its I-A history and just 28 points shy of
the all-time school record.
Quarterback Drew Willy completed a
school-record 258 passes and had the
highest pass efficiency rating in school
history and running back James
Starks became the Bulls’ first
1,000-yard rusher in the I-A era
with 1,103 yards.
For his many efforts in bringing national respect to the Bulls’ football program, Gill received a contract extension
through 2012 in December of 2007.
“I am extremely pleased to reward
Turner’s outstanding efforts in
this way,” said Warde Manuel,
Buffalo’s Director of Athletics. “He has brought to our
football program a winning
mentality, stability, confidence and a true vision
for excellence both on
and off the field. All of the
accolades he has received
have been richly deserved
and I am very happy to know
that he will continue to lead our
football program for the foreseeable
future. On the day we hired Turner I stated that, ‘I can’t wait to get started with
what I think will be a very exciting chapter in Bulls’ football history.’ I am even
more excited about what the future holds for UB football now that I have seen
Turner’s work over the past two years.”
UB President John B. Simpson noted that: “Coach Gill has proven himself to
be an outstanding ambassador for UB wherever he goes, whether on the playing field or in our surrounding communities. His commitment to serving our
communities, including the leadership role he and his wife Gayle have taken
in partnering with the Buffalo school system to create new opportunities for
youth in our region, plays just as important a role in advancing the UB vision,”
said Simpson. “Those achievements and contributions are a source of pride
for all of us at UB—and indeed, for Bulls fans and UB alumni and supporters
everywhere.”
“I am grateful to President John Simpson and Athletic Director, Warde
Manuel for extending my contract and their commitment to both myself and
the football program,” said Gill. “It is great to know they are as committed to
the staff as we are to them. I feel very honored to be at this outstanding University.”
The Texas native made an immediate impact in his first year as he led the
Bulls to a number of firsts. In 2006, Buffalo scored the most points in a season
(220) since moving to Division I-A. UB also scored the most points (201) of any
team in the MAC East Division and defeated the first team – Kent State – with
a winning record since joining Mid-American Conference in 1999.
Gill has reached the pinnacle of college football as both a player and a coach,
he was part of three national championships as a coach at the University of
Nebraska and a Heisman Trophy finalist as a player. He become the 23rd head
football coach at the University at Buffalo on December 16, 2005.
Gill, 45, who spent the 2005 season serving as Player Development Director
and Offensive Assistant with the Green Bay Packers, was lauded as one of the
nation’s top recruiters while an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004. The
Cornhuskers won national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997 during that span.
Gill, who was selected following a national search, brings with him tremendous success as both a player and coach. Consider how few head coaches in
America can claim to have:
• As a player, to have never lost a conference game as a starter; to have led
his team to the national championship game and to have been a finalist for
the Heisman Trophy (won by his teammate).

Football HEAD COACH TURNER GILL
• As a coach, to be on the sidelines for three national championships and
to have coached an individual who won the Heisman Trophy.
UB President John B. Simpson said thatGill’s hiring “is great news for UB,
marking not just an important step forward in our continuing work to build a
strong, competitive athletic program, but also a key outcome of our universitywide commitment to institutional excellence.”
During his tenure at Nebraska, Gill served as an assistant coach for College
Football Hall of Famer Tom Osborne, current Ohio University head coach Frank
Solich and current Nebraska mentor Bill Callahan. He tutored the Huskers’
quarterbacks from 1992-2002, was named assistant head football coach in
2003, and served as wide receivers coach in 2004.
“I am honored and privileged to be a part of a great team with President
John Simpson and Warde Manuel,” said Gill. “They are tremendous people
and I know the University at Buffalo has great leadership with them in place.
I sincerely thank both of them for giving me this opportunity.
“When I talked to people about Warde, they had nothing but high regard
for him as a person and as an athletic director,” said Gill. “He has created an
excitement on campus and in the community. I want to be a part of this special
time at this institution. Warde has that drive and determination that brings
out excellence in other people. Our football staff will help him to deliver that
excitement to Western New York, the rest of New York State, and hopefully, the
rest of the country.”
In speaking about his expectations for his team, Gill said: “We are going to be
a team where each person believes in himself, his teammates, his coaches, and
the people of this institution. We will be a family that will dedicate ourselves
to excellence, balance, and growth. It is one of our main goals to make sure
that these young men truly enjoy the college football experience.
“It is our intention to build a team that will be physical and attacking on both
sides of the ball, as well as on special teams. Not only will the experience be
great for the players, but we will entertain the students and the fans as well,”
said Gill.
During the height of Nebraska football in the 1990s, with Gill serving as
quarterbacks coach, the Cornhuskers had unprecedented success at both the
quarterback position and as a team. Gill - rated one of the top ten recruiters in
the nation in 2000 and 2001 by ESPN.com - played a vital role in Nebraska’s three
national titles, and mentored a string of record-breaking quarterbacks, from
Tommie Frazier to Jamaal Lord to 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch.
Crouch, Frazier and Lord rank as the top three total career offense leaders in
Nebraska history (while Gill, himself, ranks eighth). Crouch won the Heisman
Trophy, Walter Camp Award (top player in the nation) and the Davey O’Brien
Award (nation’s top quarterback) as well as being a first-team All-American in
2001 under Gill’s tutelage.
Frazier was also a first-team All-American, Johnny Unitas Award winner and
Heisman Trophy finalist in 1995, and led Nebraska to back-to-back national
championships (1994-95). Both Fraizer and Crouch were tabbed as Big 12
Offensive Players of the Year. Gill also mentored a pair of Big 12 Conference
Offensive Newcomers of the Year in Frazier and Scott Frost (1996). Frost would
lead Nebraska to another national title in 1997.
In 2002, he was nominated and among the finalists for the Frank Broyles
Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in the nation. He was regarded
by several sources as one of the top recruiters in the nation.
“Turner is an outstanding human being,” said former Nebraska head coach
Tom Osborne, a member of the College Football Hall of Famer and one of the
winningest coaches in college football history. “He has great character. He’s a
great family man, an excellent recruiter, he relates well to his players and he
really works well with people. He’ll always represent the program well. He is very
knowledege as far as football goes. I have nothing but the greatest admiration
for him.”
Before accepting the job at Buffalo, Gill served as the direct liaison to players and their families as the Player Development Director. He also served as
an offensive assistant, with a focus on wide receivers. He began his coaching
career at Southern Methodist University as receivers coach in 1991.
Gill’s outstanding coaching career mirrors a memorable playing career that
culminated with him being named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 1983
(finishing fourth behind teammate Mike Rozier) and earning a berth on the
All-Decade Big Eight team (1980-89) as the starting quarterback.
Gill, a native of Fort Worth, TX, was the starting quarterback at Nebraska
from 1981-83 and led the team to a No. 2 and No. 3 national ranking. Overall,
Nebraska teams had a 28-2 overall record with Gill as the starting quarterback
and a 20-0 record in Big Eight conference play. He is the 12th winningest QB
in NCAA Div. I history.
He spent two seasons as quarterback of the Montreal Concordes of the
Canadian Football League, leading his team to playoff berths in 1984 and
1985.
One of the most respected student-athletes in Nebraska athletics history, Gill
earned the Tom Novak Award for Outstanding Leaadership and Character as
well as the Herbert Marshall Award for leadership. He has been inducted into
the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, was a three-time All Big Eight selection, and
was the MVP of the Orange Bowl and Kickoff Classic. A multi-talented athlete,
Gill also spent three seasons in the minor league systems of the Detroit Tigers
and Cleveland Indians.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Behavior Analysis from the University
of North Texas in 1990.
Gill has also served as a Spokesperson for the United Way and as honorary
chairman for Cystic Fibrosis, the American Heart Association and the American
Diabetes Association. He is a also a board member of the Lincoln (NE) Children’s
Musuem.
He and his wife Gayle have two daughters, Jordan (17) and Margaux (13).

Third Season at Buffalo
Long-time Canadian Football League head
coach Danny Barrett begins his second season as

Barrett made an immediate coaching impact
as he helped in the development of quarterback Drew Willy - who had a record-breaking season as the Bulls’ signal caller.
Barrett, who most recently served as head coach and assistant general
manager for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, brings a wealth of experience to
Buffalo having served as a head coach, assistant general manager and having
played quarterback at both the Division I level and for 14 seasons in the CFL.
Barrett became the Roughriders’ 25th head coach in 2000 and led his
team to post-season appearances for five straight seasons (2002-2006), including three out of four years advancing to the West Division final. He was
nominated for the CFL’s Coach of the Year Award in 2003.
Prior to becoming the Roughriders’ head coach, Barrett spent his previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the B.C. Lions. During the 1999

Pate recipient – voted on by the CFL Players’ Association – while a member of
the B.C. Lions for his outstanding contributions to the league, his team and
his community.
Before turning pro, Barrett was a star quarterback at the University

for the Bulls. Williams’ college coaching career includes stints at Mid-American Conference member
Toledo as well as Grand Valley State and his alma mater.
In 2007, Williams mentored a pair of linebackers (Kareem Byrom and
Larry Hutchinson) to All-MAC honors. Overall, the Bulls had four defensive
players selected to All-MAC teams in 2007.
During his tenure as a college coach, Williams’ teams have seen great
success, including a MAC Championship game berth at Toledo in 2002, a trip
to the Division II national championship game at Grand Valley State in 2001
and a bowl win at Nebraska in 2003. Williams also served an internship with
the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004.
Williams was one of the greatest defensive players in Nebraska history
after walking on to the team from Washington, D.C. A first-team All-American
at Nebraska as a defensive end, Williams was chosen in the first round (15th
overall) of the 1982 draft and played nine seasons with the Detroit Lions
(1982-90), one with Minnesota and his final two with Tampa Bay in 1992-93.
He was twice named the Lions’ team MVP in 1984 and 1987.
After his playing career ended, Williams coached at Pontiac Northern
High School, serving as defensive coordinator and was head coach at Pontiac
Central HS for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
Williams notes that the motto that reflects his life is the Biblical quote:
“Fear God, and keep his commandements: for this is the whole duty of man.”
(Ecclesiastes 12:13b).
He notes that “UB offers the student-athlete a multitude of opportunities. Its variety of excellent resources equips the student-athlete with the ability to excel academically, competitively and personally, through the development of character.”
He and his wife Crystal are the parents of six children (Brittney, 20, Nia,
17, Faith, 11, Joy, 10, Janell, 9 and Jimmy, 9).
Allen Mogridge
Offensive Line
North Carolina ‘99
Seventh Season at Buffalo
Allen Mogridge will coach the offensive line
for his second season after coaching the Bulls’ running backs for the previous three seasons. He also
serves as recruiting coordinator for head coach
Turner Gill.
In only his first season as offensive line coach, Mogridge mentored the
Bulls’ first ever All-MAC offensive linemen in center Jamey Richard and guard
Jeff Niedermier. His offensive line paved the way for an offense that scored
a Division I-A-record 291 points, produced the Bulls’ first 1,000-yard rusher
in the Division I-A era (James Starks) and protected a quarterback that completed a school-record 258 passes (Drew Willy).
In 2006, he coached freshman running back James Starks to a secondteam All-MAC selection - the first time a UB freshman earned All-League honors.
He rejoined the Buffalo coaching staff in February of 2004 after spending one season at Western Carolina as defensive ends coach and recruiting
coordinator. He had initially joined the staff at Buffalo in 2001 as a defensive
graduate assistant coach.
Mogridge had an excellent career at North Carolina, playing four different positions and earning the Kenan Award for Leadership in his senior
season. He spent one year as strength and conditioning coach at UNC as well
while pursuing his masters degree. He spent the summer of 2000 in the Carolina Panthers training camp before playing for one year in the Arena Football

League with the Carolina Cobras.
He rejoined the Buffalo coaching staff in February of 2004 after spending one season at Western Carolina as defensive ends coach and recruiting
coordinator.
In his first stint at Buffalo he assisted all facets of the defense - helping
the Bulls jump from near the bottom of total defense in the nation to 45th in
2001 - while focusing on the Bulls’ defensive linemen.
The Severville, TN native married the former Jennifer Carpenter, and
they have two daughters, Carter Olivia (Livi) (4) and Isabella Grace (1). He enjoys music and the outdoors.
The motto that reflects his life is: “Hard work, dedication, persistence
and faith will take you far in life and football.”
Brian Mohnsen
Defensive Ends
Nebraska ‘91
Third Season at Buffalo
Brian Mohnsen begins his third season at Buffalo. He made the move from linebackers coach to
defensive ends coach in 2007.
As defensive ends coach, Mohnsen aided in
the development of All-MAC defensive end Trevor
Scott, who had 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries en
route to finishing runner up in the voting for MAC Defensive Player of the Year
in 2007.
As linebackers coach in 2006, his impact was seen immediately in his
first season as the Bulls top three leaders in the tackles per game category
were all linebackers.
Mohnsen came to UB after serving as the defensive line coach at Minnesota State-Mankato. In 2004, he was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern Oklahoma State, leading the defense to a second place ranking nationally
in total defense and pass defense, third in rushing defense and fifth in scoring
defense.
Mohnsen spent 12 years at Nebraska (1992-2003), serving as director of
the Cornhuskers’ video scouting department while assisting with gameday
management for both home and away games.
During the 1991 season, Mohnsen started in his career as an undergraduate coach working with the defensive linemen and linebackers at Nebraska,
while also performing student teaching duties. From 1987-90, Mohnsen was
a member of the Cornhusker football program as a defensive end and a linebacker, earning a varsity letter during his senior year.
A native of McCook, NE, he graduate from Nebraska with a bachelor’s
degree in education in 1991. He and his wife Kerri have a daughter named
Madison (12).
Aaron Stamn
Tight Ends/Special Teams
Minnesota State - Mankato ‘02
Third Season at Buffalo
Aaron Stamn returns for his third season as
UB’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. The special teams have flourished under his
guidance.
In 2007, kicker A.J. Principe was named Sporting News Freshman All-America Honorable Mention after hitting 15-of-20
field goals for the season, including nine straight at one point, and connected
on 32-of-34 PATs in the finest freshman season by a kicker in UB’s history. In
addition, punter Ben Woods was named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award and
finished his career as the school record holder in nearly every statistical category. In addition, the Bulls blocked five kicks.
In 2006, he led the special teams unit to one of its finest seasons in recent years. Under his tutelage, the special teams unit returned its first kick for
a touchdown since 1989 and blocked seven kicks - the most by a UB team
since the 1996 season.
Prior to coming to UB, Stamn spent the two seasons at Nebraska as a
defensive assistant, working with Huskers’ defensive line with coach John
Blake, and helping that unit lead the nation with 50 sacks in 2005 and an
Alamo Bowl victory win over Michigan. That sack figure is the second highest
in Nebraska’s long and rich football history.
Stamn came to Nebraska from St. Cloud State in Minnesota, where he
served as a graduate assistant coach for two years (2002-03). In 2002, he assisted with the defensive line and outside linebackers as the Huskies ranked
third in Division II in rush defense while posting a 9-2 record. In 2003, Stamn
helped St. Cloud to a 7-4 record while coaching the linebackers.
Stamn also served as a student assistant coach while earning his undergraduate degree in Physical Education at Minnesota State-Mankato. He
served as an offensive line assistant coach in 2000, while assisting with the
defensive backs in 2001.

Kentucky State ‘93
Third Season at Buffalo
Juan Taylor begins his third season as wide receiver’s coach at Buffalo.
In 2007, Taylor coached Buffalo’s first All-MAC
wide receiver since 1999 in Naaman Roosevelt.
Buffalo had three wide receivers with 38 or more
receptions in 2007.
Taylor came to Buffalo from Kentucky State University where he served
as tight ends and offensive tackles coach for the 2004 season and as the running backs coach during the 2003 season. He also served as the wide receivers coach at Kentucky State from 1995-99, while also serving as the school’s
Residence Life Director. Between his stints at Kentucky State, Taylor operated
his own business for five years.
While at Kentucky State, Taylor coached four first-team All-Conference
selections, six second-team choices, and helped the Thorobreds win the Pioneer Bowl in 1997.
Taylor was an outstanding wide receiver at Division II Kentucky State,
earning First Team Black College All-American and team MVP honors in 1992.
He led his team in yards receiving, total receptions and scoring from 1990-92.
He would later play and serve as a coach on the Milwaukee Mustangs of the
Arena Football League under former Buffalo Bills coach Lou Saban.
A native of Canton, OH - and no stranger to recruiting in Mid-American
Conference territories - Taylor was inducted into the Canton-McKinley Senior
High School Athletic Hall of Fame this past summer. He and his wife Betsie
live with their chocolate labrador named Taylor.

Kansas State ‘90
First Season at Buffalo
Vantz Singletary enters his first season as
coach of the defensive tackles.
Singletary has spent the past two seasons as
defensive line coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga
and has 11 years of Division I coaching experience

mentored a number of future professionals, while helping build the Warriors’
program to a perennial contender in the Western Athletic Association.
While at Hawai’i, Singletary coached 11 All-WAC selections, including
NFL draft choices Travis LaBoy and Isaac Sopoaga. LaBoy was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, a second-team All-American and a second-round

Alama-Francis (Detroit Lions).
Singletary’s coaching career began at Trinity College. While on staff at
Trinity from 1992 to 1996, he worked as the defensive line and linebackers
