Harriet Tubman By: K elsey Have you ever heard of the UnderGround Railroad? Or the brave people that started it? Well, one of those people were Harriet Tubman. She was very brave and did what was right. In this biography, you will learn what she did and how she helped the UnderGround Railroad. Read if you want to see. Early Life Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 but no one knows what day she was born as a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland. As a baby till ive Harriet lived in a one room cabin with her family, but later when she was six she was loaned to another family with a eleven children and learned how to take care of a baby. She had many jobs such as plowing ields, loading produce onto wagons, hauling logs, and driving oxen, because of this she became strong for all of the manual labor, and awards were only table scraps. As a thirteen year old, Harriet was hit with an iron weight. It was caused by a slave owner trying to hit his slave but hit Harriet instead and never got treated. This caused disabling epileptic, headaches, powerful visions, and dream experiences for the rest of her life. Family Harriet had two husbands. Her irst was John Tubman but died in 1851 and got remarried to Nelson Davis but he also died in 1888 and Harriet never got married again, but decided to adopt Gerlie as her only child. Her parents were Harriet Greene Ross and Ben Ross. And her grandmother’s name was Modesty. She had nine siblings, including herself was 10 children. Their names were Linah, Mariah, Ritty, Soph, Robert, Ben, Henry, and Moses. The Escape Harriet her brothers, Ben and Henry, tried to escape from slavery on September 17, 1849, but later on their journey Henry and Ben wanted to back home. Soon after, Harriet escaped but by herself. She journeyed disguising herself doing clever tricks to fool anyone who may ind her. Harriet made to the promised lands without being seen, but Harriet wanted to go back to help other slaves get to the promised lands. This is when she wanted to help in the UnderGround Railroad and became a very big part. Harriet died on March 10, 1913 of Pneumonia. Fun Facts 1. She was born as Araminta Ross but changed to Harriet Tubman after her mom 2. She had nicknames such as Minty and Moses 3. Harriet thought her hair (which was never combed) may have saved her life from the iron weight because it was so bushy 4. Some think the UnderGround Railroad is under ground but really it’s a series of houses that are free for slaves to stay at so they can get to the promised lands without being seen Closing Harriet Tubman was very brave and fought for freedom and was help for many slaves.
