From the Principal - Gladstone High School

Year 12 Food & Hospitality
The Year 12 Food and Hospitality students’ Parent Dinner
event, held at the Gladstone Stadium on the 7th of April was
a great success. The 9 students in the class chose to
present an Aussie inspired degustation meal, which
consisted of 12 courses. Serving a crowd of 30, the students
soon realised the importance of food preparation, quality
control and collaboration. Each student contributed and
worked as a team, supporting and encouraging each other to
ensure the success of the event. Parents, caregivers and
staff who attended were very proud of students’ efforts, as
was I, to plan, cater for and deliver such a professional
event. Well done Year 12’s.

Year 12 Food and Hospitality Parent Dinner
As Principal it was my privilege to attend the Year 12 Food and
Hospitality Parent Dinner on Tuesday evening. The students catered for
Sharryn Daly – Principal
30 guests in the most magnificent manner. I am confident that the
guests left the evening feeling very proud of the professional level of
catering that was produced. Well done to Courtney and her Food and
Hospitality students.

Alternate Learning Option Program
GHS Graduate achieves Doctorate
2015 NAPLAN Tests
Our new Alternate Learning Option Program (ALOP)
has started very successfully on the Friday of Week
9, with 4 students working for the full day under the
expertise of Mrs Julia Wardrop. As you can see from
the pictures in the newsletter, the students have
been working on the 6 Square marking in the
quadrangle, which is a very popular area of the
school yard at breaks. Student feedback through
Student Leaders and the SWAT team have
requested that these game lines be repainted, and
we are proud that the ALOP students have
completed this task already. The ALOP program
aims to develop student’s skills in learning
collaboratively, working as part of a team, setting
goals, improving confidence and improving Literacy
and Numeracy skills. The students will also learn
new practical skills as they complete hands on
projects around the school. Well done to the ALOP
students & thanks from the school students & staff.
Student Comments
“I think the lines look a lot better than they did
before.”
“The lines look better and we had fun painting them.”
“I think the lines look great and I had fun.”
“I think that the lines are a lot brighter and better
now that we have painted over them”.

VET / Flexible Programs
Eli Moore was awarded his PhD at a Graduation
Ceremony on Monday the 23rd March at Adelaide
Convention Centre.
His thesis is titled Hyper branched polyglyerol at the
bio interface and signifies the end point of a
significant effort by Eli since he left GHS.
Eli was a student at GHS from 2001 to 2005
graduating in 2005 to undertake study in
Nanotechnology at Flinders University. He has
persevered in this research field for many years now
and his efforts were recognised & celebrated at the
ceremony on Monday.
For those of us who remember him we are very
proud of his efforts and would like to congratulate
him.
We also congratulate his parents Tina & Allan Moore
of Laura as it is from good stock and positive home
environments that successful people come. I
personally fondly remember Eli as a very divergent
& creative thinker and I am pleased to have known
him. It's great to see students from our small country
high school achieve such lofty heights, but lets not
claim all the credit, of course we recognise that this
achievement has been due to Eli's hard work over a
very long time...well done mate!

Senior School / SACE Coordinator
The time is once again approaching for our Year 9
students to undertake the National Assessment
Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests.
This year the tests will be held at school on Tuesday
12th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th May.
Students absent on any one of the three testing
days will have a catch up day on Friday 15th May
where they will need to sit any tests they have
missed. Students will once again be assessed using
common national tests in Reading, Writing,
Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and
punctuation) and Numeracy.
As per usual, all curriculum areas are working on the
explicit literacy demands of their learning areas.
Through English classes, students have been given
explicit instruction on the format of both narrative
and persuasive writing and the language features to
use to achieve their best. All Mathematics classes
have also had support to help prepare students for
the Numeracy section of the NAPLAN tests and
assist their general learning. Students have also
been exposed to practice tests in classes as well as
instruction on test literacies of completing all
sections, eliminating answers, problem solving and
other necessary skills. Teachers in all subject areas
have continued to support students with their
learning, which will also assist them in the tests.
Students may be withdrawn from these tests by their
parent or caregiver if they have an objection to their
participation. If you would like to withdraw your child
from the NAPLAN testing process, please contact
me at the school and I will send home the required
form for completion. All parents are encouraged to
contact me at the school on 8662 2171 if you have
any questions about the 2015 NAPLAN tests.

Year 9 Geography Fundraising
As part of the Civics and Citizenship component of
our Geography curriculum, the Year 9 class decided
on raising money for the construction of the new
WWI memorial, commemorating the centenary of
the ANZACS. The class developed, planned and
implemented two fundraising activities, including a
“Sponge Throwing” event and Bake sale. As a class
we were able to raise and hand over a cheque for
$402.30 to the Gladstone Lions Club, who facilitated
the construction of memorial. A huge thank you goes
to everyone who kindly supplied homemade cakes,
donated to the appeal and supported the Year 9
Geography class in this endeavour.
