Equal Opportunities Policy

Equal Opportunities Policy
At Curious Kittens we regard all to be equal. We accept value and
promote all cultures, religions, genders and people with different
abilities. Parents are consulted regarding family beliefs and on
issues relating to dress code as well as hair and skin care.
Where English is not the first language of a child/family, staff are
mindful that general group instructions may not be understood by
the child. They endeavour to help the child to understand by using
appropriate hand gestures and facial expressions. We also ensure
that parents provide us with phrases for important issues, for
example toilet, eat, pain, Mummy or the name of a comfort
toy/blanket. Where a parent may have a problem understanding or
speaking English, we enlist the help of the college language tutors.
We actively promote awareness of all the above by displaying
positive pictures and posters within the rooms used by the children. We provide toys, books and games
that all children can relate to regardless of culture, gender or ability. Children are encouraged to share
their experiences with staff and with each other during ‘circle time’ and at any other time when
opportunity arises.
Festivals and other important dates relating to a host of different cultures can be explained. Discussed
and celebrated if families involved agree and they are age appropriate.
We welcome and encourage people with knowledge of other cultures and countries to participate in
activities unique to that culture.
The positive ethos of Curious Kittens has been achieved by praising and
encouraging children at every opportunity to enhance the self esteem of all
children. We aim to provide a safe and happy learning environment in which
children show courtesy and respect for others and take pride in themselves.
Curious Kittens strives towards a well mannered, considerate community which
is dedicated to learning and playing together positively.
All staff are familiar with and committed to our equal opportunities policy and
aim to foster a positive attitude and promote an atmosphere where all children
feel valued and unique.
Reference to equal opportunities is included in all staff job descriptions. During
inductions for new staff policies are discussed and all staff are given copies of
them.
We offer all parents/carers an informal meeting with your child’s key person and room leader to ask any
questions and to gain information on your child’s needs and requirements.
All staff attend an Equal Opportunity training course as part of their induction process.
