‘Abraham Lincoln and the Promise of America’
Exhibit Visits the Lehigh Valley Heritage
Museum
written by the MDS Students at South Mountain Middle School
The MDS students from South Mountain Middle School took a guided tour of Abraham
Lincoln’s life at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of
the United States. President Lincoln overcame many problems in his lifetime, which helped him
when he was president.
President Lincoln spent only 11 months during his entire childhood going to school
because his family needed him to help put at home. Instead, much of what President Lincoln
learned came from the many books he read.
During his lifetime, President Lincoln lost many people he loved. His mother died when
he was 9 years old. Two of his sons also died. President Lincoln continued to be strong even
after losing his loved ones.
The Lincoln exhibit had many artifacts which the public could look about President
Lincoln’s life and times. The SMMS students had an opportunity to touch replicas of items people
had used during the Civil War like a drum, a wooden canteen, and an iron pot used to cook over
a campfire.
The Civil War occurred when the Northern States and the Southern States of the USA
fought over slavery. Slavery is when one person forces another person to work against their will.
President Lincoln believed slavery was wrong. President Lincoln wanted the USA to stay
together as a country. He wanted to prevent any new states joining the USA to not have slavery.
When the Civil War ended, the USA was still one country and slavery was stopped.
During the last days of the Civil War, President Lincoln and his wife Mary went to Ford’s
Theater to see a play and get their minds off of what was happening to the USA. One of the
actors in the play did not agree with President Lincoln’s ideasabout slavery. The actor went up to
where President Lincoln and his wife were sitting and shot Lincoln in the head while he watched
the play. President Lincoln died the next day.
The South Mountain Middle School students learned a lot about President Lincoln’s life,
political views, and death. The curator at the museum was friendly and knew a lot about
President Lincoln. Anyone interested in learning more about President Lincoln should definitely
go and see this exhibit.
