ASSE Releases New Documentary: American Society
of Safety Engineers – Celebrating 100 Years of Safety
The film tells the story of work, safety and tragedy through
the decades and why workers are safer today. Sponsored
by the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Available now: www.asse.org/ASSECenturyofSafety
Factory fires and sweatshops are not just a tragedy of the
past. The garment industry of Bangladesh employs 3.4 million
garment workers in 4,200 factories, which produce largely for
export to the U.S. and other countries. The sector is widely
regarded as having the worst labor conditions of any major
apparel producing country. In recent years, a series of factory
fires and building collapses have killed hundreds of workers
who were locked inside and unable to escape. At 20 cents
(U.S.) an hour, Bangladesh has the lowest wages of any major
garment producing country. Studies show this wage fails to
cover the cost of the minimum nutritional needs of even a
single worker, let alone her family. Thank you sweatfree.org.

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
The Triangle Waist Company was located one block east of
Washington Square Park. March 25, 1911 a fire broke out on the
8th floor. The workers ran to the fire escape. It collapsed, dropping
them to their deaths. On the 9th floor a critical exit was locked.
People on the street watched in horror as the workers began to
jump out the windows. Fire trucks arrived but their ladders only
reached the 6th floor. 146 mostly young immigrant women perished.
There was a trial but the owners, long known for their anti-union
activities, were acquitted. The fire became a rallying cry for the
ILGWU and the international labor movement. Many of the labor
and fire safety laws that protect us to this day were created in
response to this tragic event.
We remember because we are still
fighting for social justice for all!
Thank you to all who are building the centennial
and have made this calendar possible
