Dewey School Families,
March 2 is the official birthday of Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel, who we know as Dr. Seuss. The importance of
reading is never one to be underestimated. The more children read, the better readers and writers they
become. Do not be alarmed if your child loves to read the same book over and over. This is his or her way
of becoming a proficient reader. It is like learning to ride a bicycle; we need to practice over and over again
before we get better. Remember that we want you to foster a love of reading in your children. Listen
intently to books they bring home to share with you. Students are excited to show you what they have been
working so hard on at school. Also take time to read to them. When children see your interest in reading it
only increases their interest and desire to read as well.
Sincerely,
Mr. Funkenbusch
Principal

Dear Dewey Families:
I am writing to inform you of a wonderful program we have at Dewey Elementary
School this year. It is called Blessings in a Bag. The program is privately funded and
does not use any money from Dewey Elementary or Quincy Public School District
budgets. It was started by the parents of one of our own Quincy students. We are
excited to be one of three schools in the district to offer this program.
Blessings in a Bag is designed to provide food to elementary school children on the
weekends when they are not present at school. Test scores, improved reading skills,
positive behavior, improved health, and increased attendance have all been
attributed to the success of this program. Your child will be included in the program
when you return the form below indicating your desire to participate in the
program.
Every Friday, your child will receive a bag with food that requires little to no
preparation. The intent is to provide students with nutritious food options each
weekend. This is done by volunteers at an outside organization. The food may
change each week and Dewey School does not determine what comes in the bag.
Please sign and return the slip below if you wish to participate.
