History of the
Vineland Social Maturity
Scale (1935 & 1965)
Vineland Adaptive Behavior
Scales (1984; 2005; 2008; 2016)
Edgar Doll, Vineland School-NJ
Sara Sparrow, David Balla, Dominic
Cichetti; Celina Saulnier, Dominic
Cichetti (2016).
Adaptive behavior is
developmental and
multidimensional.
Education for All Handicapped
Children Act of 1975 (now IDEA).
Included domains Socialization,
Communication, Daily Living Skills,
Motor Skills.
Adaptive behavior is best
assessed using a third-party
administration.
Most reliable method of obtaining
accurate information on adaptive
behavior is through a clinical
interview with parent or caregiver.
Vineland-3:
Development & Standardization
• The development of the Vineland-3 was a multi-year process
(over a decade since the Vineland-2, 2005) involving three
major phases:
 Content development – input from Vineland experts,
users, & classroom teachers
 Large-scale data collection – used to determine
basal/ceiling rules & finalize item selections for forms
 Standardization – norm development, establishing
reliability & validity
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 4
Structure of the Vineland-3
• The Vineland-3 measures the domains of adaptive functioning
specified by the diagnostic guidance systems for assessment of
developmental disability.
• The first three (core) domains align with the major adaptive behavior
areas specified by the American Association of Intellectual and
Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD, 2010) and the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder – Fifth Edition (DSM-5) for the
diagnosis of intellectual disability (ID):
 Communication (Conceptual)
 Daily Living (Practical)
 Socialization (Social)

Motor Skills & Maladaptive Domains
(Optional)
• Vineland-3 users can choose to include two optional domains
in the administration according to whether or not motor
development and/or problem behaviors are a concern:
 Motor Skills domain now optional (no longer included in
the ABC) – age range extended upward (birth to age 9)
 Maladaptive Behavior domain (ages 3 to adult)
includes Internalizing, Externalizing, & Critical Items
categories. No basal & ceiling rules (administer all
items).

Online Administration
 Q-global enables online completion of all 3 forms – forms may
now be EMAILED to teachers & parents
 No entering data (automatic scoring)
 Automatically tracks basal & ceiling rules – raters just respond
to what’s presented on the screen.
 Software automatically administers the correct subdomains
based on the examinee’s date of birth*
 Items with related content are grouped into topics (e.g.,
toileting, dressing) & displayed on a single screen to facilitate
conversation & scoring
 Click to reveal optional item probes & scoring criteria
 “Comments section” at bottom of screen for examiner notes
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 13
Changes to the Parent/Caregiver
& Teacher Forms
• Introduction of basal and ceiling rules to Parent/Caregiver +
Teacher forms (Comprehensive versions – all items completed
for Domain-level forms).
• Interview + Parent/Caregiver forms are now separate
‒ Previously used same wording w/ same norms
‒ Item wording differences – same topics covered w/ simplified
wording for Parent/Caregiver Form (5th grade reading level)
• Spanish-language Parent/Caregiver form available
‒ Paper forms or digital format available for online completion
‒ No separate norms (English translation only)
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 14
Updated Item Content for Vineland-3
• Item content updated to reflect changes in the
nature of everyday life as well as changes in the
conceptions of developmental disabilities (e.g.,
autism spectrum disorders).
• Outdated items were dropped or modified & many
more contemporary items have been added.
• Incorporates more culturally sensitive wording to
allow for cultural differences.
‒ Ex: “Social gullibility” item  probes for awareness that friendlyappearing individuals may not always have positive intentions
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 15
Examples of Updated Content
• Receptive subdomain expanded to include items at all
developmental levels (e.g., more items about gesture use and
nonverbal communication)
• Written subdomain expanded to include items at all developmental
levels (e.g., more items about pre-reading & writing skills)
• Items added to the Personal subdomain to reflect healthy eating
habits & exercise choices (e.g., not only showing awareness that
some foods are healthier than others, but taking initiative to make
healthy eating choices)
• Community subdomain updated to reflect use of modern
technology for everyday purposes (e.g., using the internet to obtain
information)
• Items added to the Coping subdomain to assess for social gullibility
(e.g., “understands that a friendly appearing person may actually
intend harm”; “recognizes that advertising messages may not be
accurate”)
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 16
Modified wording for response choices
•
“Sometimes” has replaced “Partially” to distinguish activities that are performed
partially vs. activities performed independently sometimes
•
“Don’t Know” (DK) and “No opportunity” (N/O) response options have been
eliminated –previously generated score of 1 on Vineland-II (same as “Sometimes”)
•
“Estimate” option remains available – clinicians may notate when a particular
score is an educated guess instead of selecting the “Don’t Know” response option
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 17
Vineland-3
Forms
Vineland-3 forms:
3 basic administration formats (2 versions of each):
• Interview (Comprehensive) – with or without probes
• Interview (Domain)
• Teacher (Comprehensive)
• Teacher (Domain)
• Parent/Caregiver (Comprehensive)
• Parent/Caregiver (Domain)
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 19
Domain-Level Forms
• Domain-Level forms offer a brief administration format for the Interview,
Parent/Caregiver, & Teacher forms (consists of items drawn from each of
the subdomains contained on the Comprehensive form). Provides overall
scores for each domain & the ABC – no subdomain scores are provided.
• This format may be a better choice if:
 If the primary focus of assessment is eligibility determination
 If a relatively brief assessment is desired or time is limited.
 Can be used for progress-tracking purposes or if further evaluation
is needed in a particular domain of functioning
• The subdomain scores & greater amount of item-level data provided by
Comprehensive forms may be preferred if the results will be used to help
guide intervention planning and/or make placement decisions based on the
examinee’s specific area(s) of weakness & daily supports needed.

Vineland-3 Interview Form:
• The Vineland Interview Form remains the leading measure
for assessing adaptive behavior!
• Open-ended question format elicits more descriptive
information about the true frequency & independent
application of behaviors.
• Adaptive behavior is NOT just capacity or repertoire of skills –
it is the independent & functional application of skills
within the context of daily routines; Does Do.
• Many have the “capacity” to perform certain skills, but may not
actually perform those behaviors independently without
prompting, reminding, or other assistance. Differentiate the
can do from the does do.
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition 22
Vineland-3 Interview Form:
Suggested Questions + Item-Specific Probes
• Suggested interview questions are general opening questions
designed to begin discussion about a particular content area.
• Optional item-specific probes help elicit more descriptive responses to
help distinguish between what activities the individual can perform
independently vs. what he/she actually does in context of daily routine.
• These are NOT intended to script an interview! Open-ended format
should be used to prompt the respondent to talk about adaptive areas
being addressed – interviewer does not read items to respondent.
• Assists less experienced interviewers – helps “lower the learning curve”
of the adaptive interview for clinicians.

Multi-Rater Report:
Compare results between forms
• Compare adaptive behavior across settings from the point of
view of two different respondents by using the Interview Form
or Parent/Caregiver Form together w/ the Teacher Form.
• The multi-rater report provides comparisons across the two
forms when either of these form combinations is used.
• Report provides scale-level & item-level comparisons.

Compare results across administrations
• Compare results over time for up to five administrations of
the same form (Interview, Parent/Caregiver, or Teacher) –
regardless of whether the brief (Domain-Level) or fulllength (Comprehensive) versions of the forms were used
on different occasions.
• Scores for the ABC & core domains can be compared
across administrations, as well as subdomain-level results
(if Comprehensive forms were used).
• However, different formats (Interview – Parent – Teacher)
should not be compared – results may be confounded by
behavioral changes in home vs. school settings.

• Available for Comprehensive form reports only.
• Items in each subdomain are organized by “Content Areas” in
which to focus intervention efforts (e.g., Written Communication:
Pre-reading; Developing Reading Skills; Developing Writing Skills;
Applying Reading & Writing Skills).
• Lowest subdomain scores listed first, followed by second lowest,
etc. – identify examinee’s weakest subdomains & refer to item-level
data to identify specific behaviors in need of intervention.
• Items within each subdomain are arranged according to
developmental sequence (ordered from easiest to most difficult) –
lowest-numbered items w/ scores of 0 or 1 can be can be reference

Diagnostic group results:
• Adaptive behavior scores are central to diagnostic definitions of
intellectual disability (ID) & developmental disability (DD) –
Vineland scores are also a valuable component of autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) evaluations.
• Distinct patterns of results were observed in the ASD sample –
Vineland-3 subdomains most relevant to deficits in social
communication & social interaction include:
 Communication  Receptive & Expressive
 Socialization  Interpersonal relationships & Play & Leisure
• The Critical Items category of Maladaptive Behaviors captures
behaviors such as repetitive movements & speech, fixated
interests, unusual sensory experiences & lack of response to pain
