Hot dogs prove
recipe for success
A growing number of convenience retailers are cashing in on the food-to-go
eating revolution – thanks to the unrivalled shopper appeal of Rollover Hot Dogs
R
ollover is the UK’s leading
hot dog supplier, offering
a wide range of equipment
and consumables to suit all
consumer needs. It is the only UK
company to offer a complete package
of free on-loan catering equipment,
premium hot dogs, bread, sauce,
packaging and full point-of-sale.
Simon Lewis, 54, who runs a 2,000sq
ft Londis store in Slade Green, Kent, is
one of many retailers seeing the benefits
of boosting food-to-go sales with a
Rollover hot dog unit.
It has proved an instant winner at the
outlet, which is opposite a busy railway
station so caters for a mix of commuters,
office workers and school children. In
the first four weeks, Simon sold almost
1,100 Rollover Hot Dogs and demand is
still growing.
A busy urban store, it employs 21 fulland part-time staff, opens from 7am to
8pm six days a week and 10am to 6pm
on Sundays, and faces local competition
from Morrisons, Tesco Express and
three other independent outlets.
Its food-to-go offering included
hot sausage rolls and filled rolls, but
Rollover has added a new dimension.
Here, Simon, who celebrates 25
years running the c-store at the end of
2013, reveals how Rollover has made a
difference:
What are the benefits of Rollover as a
food-to-go offer?
“Rollover provides everything you need
and the unit is simple to operate. It is a
great footfall generator and most of that
is extra business, which is a bonus.”
How has Rollover benefited your business?
“It is still early days for us, but it has
already added to our food-to-go
offering. In fact, a big chunk of sales
is extra business, so there has been
absolutely no downside for us.”

Who buys the product?
“Just about everybody, from kids on
their way to school to people on their
way to the office. It generates demand
throughout the day. I’m really impressed
that we are able to sell hot dogs even at
breakfast time!”
Are sales limited to a specific time of day?
“No, sales obviously peak around
lunchtime, but they are spread
throughout the day, which keeps things
turning over and cuts down on food
waste, which is a good thing.”
What do consumers think of the
product offer?
“I have had nothing but positive
feedback from customers. People like
the hot dogs simply because they are
very good. I’m not a big hot dog eater,
but I really like the chilli one we are
doing at the moment alongside the
existing pork hot dog.”

What part does Rollover play in your
food-to-go business?
“It has complemented what we already
offered and was no real hassle to
integrate into our business. There is no
capital investment as the equipment
is free on loan. The margins are good
as well, which is always welcome –
particularly at the moment when
business is competitive. It is definitely
an important part of our food-to-go
mix now and has strengthened our
offering. It also helps create impulse
purchase, because somebody who
comes in to pay their energy bill will
see the unit and be tempted.”
Rollover sells more than 20 million
hot dogs a year and also supplies burgers,
nachos and popcorn, all with full
equipment packages if required. It also
offers full on-site installation and training.
