Since 2011, NeDa has led the biosphere reserve. A particular focus in NeDas own strategy is to contribute to maintain the open landscape. From the very beginning, NeDa considered this as strategically important in order to maintain a vibrant and attractive countryside. The biosphere reserve is also important in terms of tourism and fishing and can bring market benefits as the world asks for sustainable development. Biosphere reserves are geographically divided into three zones The biosphere reserve gives NeDa the status and stability to provide long-term continuity in its work with the unique natural and cultural values of the area. Core area – consists of 20 nature reserves along the river and in Färnebofjärdens National Park. The core areas are protected by law in order to preserve valuable natural assets. Buffer zones - zones surrounding the core areas (100-300 meters). Transition area – the outer zone is the largest part of a biosphere reserve. This is where most human activities and development projects for a sustainable society are carried out. Therefore, the outer zone is important for the economic and social development of the region. Sweden has five biosphere reserves (2016): SUPPORT The Biosphere reserve shall support research, education and environmental monitoring that benefit the area. PRESERVE The biosphere reserve shall help to conserve biological and cultural diversity, ecosystems and landscapes through use. Biosphere reserves: three objectives • A biosphere reserve is a model area for sustainable development. The biological northern border, the Limes Norrlandicus, is more apparent here than elsewhere. The junction between North and South results in a high diversity of species of plants and animals. There are more species of mammals, birds and fish here than in any other area in Scandinavia. • Long-term cooperation for sustainable development has continued in the area through NeDa since 1986. • Increases the possibilities to live and work in the area. • Preserves the unique river landscape through use. “Biosphere - all living things on Earth and the environment they live in” • Takes advantage of local interests, knowledge, resourcefulness and dedication. • Strong international brand that provides a positive image and raises interest. • Increases business opportunities for the tourism and service industries. • Increases the opportunities for national and EU funding. Biological mosquito control In areas infested with floodwater mosquitoes, mosquito control is currently essential for people to live and work in these areas, and also to have visitors come to the area. The biological control agent BTI is used to reduce larval amounts of floodwater mosquitoes when needed. BTI is used worldwide and so far, no negative effects on other organisms have been observed, provided professional use. Within the mosquito control program, an extensive self-monitoring is included to ensure that no other organisms than mosquito larvae are harmed. MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE PROGRAMME The programme was established by UNESCO in 1971. Biosphere reserves are areas where people work together to improve the relationships between people and their valuable natural and cultural environments. • The Swedish Government joined the programme in 1986. In 2000, a committee within the Swedish Research Council was formed. • There are almost 700 biosphere reserves in over 120 countries and the number is continuously increasing. Together they form The World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The network enables cooperation on sustainable development through research and monitoring, adapted to local conditions.
