8.3.3 Students will create a “My Geography Book of Basic Terms”. The students will research the various
terms/items and write a definition or sentence to describe the locations and landforms in the regions associated
with the first civilizations. The students will stack and fold the appropriate number of pages into quarters, cutting
the folds on the top of the booklet. The booklet should include a decorative cover, definitions/sentences and
drawings of each term.

8.2.1, 8.2.3 Students will create a chart of push/pull factors of the major cultural groups of Louisiana (Acadians,
Anglos, Hispanics, African-Americans, Italians, American Indians, Germans, Arabs, Vietnamese, etc.). Students
will select one of the groups listed above and will use the RAFT writing strategy to produce a narrative essay that
details their travels to or from Louisiana.

8.2.4, 8.4.2 Students will create a five-tab foldable on the five cultural regions of Louisiana (Sportsman’s
Paradise, Crossroads, Cajun Country, Plantation Country and Greater New Orleans). Each tab should have a map
of Louisiana with the corresponding region shaded. The inside should include information on location, major
cities, unique features and ethnic groups. As an extension activity, the students will select one of the regions and
will write a three-paragraph essay explaining how the region has changed over the years.

8.4.2 Students will watch the Disney movie “The Princess and the Frog” and record terms associated with
Louisiana on a chart. Students will also complete a Q&A on Louisiana and will use the information to write their
own version of a Louisiana-based short story.

8.4.2 Students will design a T-shirt cutout showcasing a major festival held in Louisiana. As an extension activity,
students will write a journal entry on a festival they have either attended or would like to attend, including details

8.2.3 Students will create a two tab foldable on three Louisiana colonial governors, placing an image of the
governor on the left side and relevant information/facts about the governor on the right. Students will divide into
groups of 4-6 to share information on their governors. Each student will then write a letter to their governor
praising one of his actions (including anticipated long-term outcomes) and offering a suggestion for
improvement. Letters will be shared with the class.

following: John Law and the Mississippi Bubble, Louisiana becoming a Spanish Colony, the Treaty of Paris, or the

article. Articles will be posted around the classroom.
8.2.3 Students will work in groups of 2-4 to design a travel brochure or poster for John Law’s Company of the
West to inform and persuade people to settle in the area.

8.2.5 Students will analyze documents related to the Battle of New Orleans and role play to determine the
important elements and issues leading up to the event.

8.2.6 Students will create a lap book describing life in Antebellum Louisiana. Topics to be included are: people,
politics, economy, and life. Students will also complete a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the Napoleonic
Code to Common Law practice in Louisiana.

8.2.5 Students will work in groups of 3-4 to create a poster on the leaders of the Battle of New Orleans. The
poster will include a picture and facts on each of the leaders. The poster will also include a chart comparing the
Americans and British forces in four categories: leaders, war tactics, honors/recognition, and how each side
faired at the conclusion of the war. Upon completion, each group will give a brief presentation on their poster.
8.2.5 Students will work with a shoulder partner to create a Civil War flow chart that includes the following:
state’s rights, the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, the Confederate States of America and its
leaders, and the Union States and its leaders. Students will then participate in a class discussion on the causes
and effects of the Civil War, including the reactions of the leaders. Each student will then use background
knowledge to write 2-4 paragraphs on which side presented the most valid argument.
8.2.6 Students will complete a five flip tab foldable on Radical Reconstruction. The categories will include: The
Ten Percent Plan, Radical Republicans, the 14th Amendment, the Compromise of 1877, and Reconstruction. The
students will research the topics and include important information for each topic. Finally, they will work in small
groups to discuss the significance of each topic in Reconstruction.

8.2.7 Students will work in groups of 3-5 to research the major political parties during the Populist and
Progressive Movements, compiling a list of similarities and differences between the Populist groups and
Progressive groups. Each student will then write 3-4 paragraphs on the party with which they most identify,
including evidence from their research. As an extension, students will create a poster or PowerPoint on the
cultural and economic progress made during these movements.
8.2.7 Students will work in small groups to research and discuss the Plessey v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of
Education cases. Students should be able to state the arguments, decisions, and implications of both cases. After
discussing the cases, they will complete the Plessey v. Ferguson activity below.

What Impact Do Citizens Have?
8.6.1 Students will work with a partner or in small groups to research and gather information on an assigned parish
in Louisiana. The information gathered will be attached to a sheet of copy/construction paper, and compiled to form
a Louisiana scrapbook. Students will write 2-3 paragraphs describing the main characteristics of their parish.
8.6.2 Students will create a Venn Diagram to compare/contrast the preambles of the Louisiana and U.S.
Constitutions. Students will then analyze their classroom rules and work in small groups to write a “Classroom
Preamble” for those rules that will be shared with the class.
8.8.1 Students will work in small groups to research and follow bills in the current state legislative session. Each
group will select one bill and identify who the bill will impact the most, how it will impact them, and what could be
suggested to improve the bill.

8.7.2 Students will research the origin of several products shipped through the Port of New Orleans. They will
construct a map that identifies the shipping routes of various materials/products and write 2-3 paragraphs that
explain the significance of the Port of New Orleans to our local economy.

trees, lignite, etc.). Students will then work in small groups to create a chart identifying various products created

8.9.2 Students will plot weekly prices of a local commodity on a classroom line graph (e.g. crawfish, gas, etc.).
Students will include information on the graph of events/trends that would affect the price, such as droughts,
hurricanes, holidays, etc. Students will then write 3-4 paragraphs summarizing the relationship between these
