SUMMARY:
Families that reside at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) and have children in grades K–5 will attend schools in their community. Students in
grades 6–12 attend schools off-base in the city of Lakewood, WA. Schools at JBLM are operated by the Clover Park School District.
Families that reside off-base are highly encouraged to research the local schools prior to choosing a place to live. Many districts work well
with military families and will accommodate whenever possible.
Please contact the JBLM School Liaison Office or District Office if you have any questions or concerns.

SCHOOL REGISTRATION:
At what age can my child start school?
The child must be five years old on or before
midnight August 31st of the year he/she is
presented for enrollment to be eligible to
enroll in public schools.
What is required for enrollment?
1. Birth Certificate
2. Shot Record
3. Social Security Number
4. Proof of residency (utility bill, housing
contract, lease, etc.)
5. Copy of orders (on-base schools)
6. Custody or guardian papers filed through
the court. (if applicable)
How do I enroll for school?
Enrollment must be conducted at the school
level. Contact your school district for further
details.
Remember, where you live is where your
child will attend school. Please contact the
School Liaison Officer for more information.
SCHOOL CHOICE OPTIONS:
 Public School Choice: Parents may request attendance at another school within their district – HOWEVER – the school where you want
to attend MUST have room for your student in the grade and in the program you are requesting entrance into. Also, transportation IS
the parent’s responsibility. This request must be conducted every year that the student attends a school outside their residence zoned
school.
 Private Schools: There are several private schools surrounding the installation. The following website can provide you with schools
within the Pierce, Thurston and South King county: http://www.k12.wa.us/PrivateEd/PrivateSchools/default.aspx
 Home Schools: Families can elect to home school their children. Information may be found at the following website for Washington
State: http://www.k12.wa.us/PrivateEd/HomeBasedEd/default.aspx
 Charter Schools: Washington citizens voted (2013) to incorporate Charter Schools in the state. However, the laws are currently being
drafted and we don’t anticipate any charter schools in Western Washington before 2015.
REMINDERS:
 Enroll your child as soon as possible. It is not recommended that you delay enrollment for your student. The longer your child is out of
school–the more likely that he or she will regress academically and find it more difficult to make a smooth transition.
 After you have enrolled, please return to the school and provide the school with your updated information. The JBLM School Liaison
Office is contacted by schools trying to find parents who have failed to give the school a good working telephone contact or unit address
and phone number.
 If your child has an IEP or 504 Plan: Please provide a copy, not the original to the school at enrollment if necessary.
